The sensitivity of a NC-300 or NC-303 are as good or better then any new transceiver.? They don't need any pre-amp.? Plus they like many boat anchor receivers have a very low noise floor level.? The NC300/303 receiver was no slouch.? This was a first class no hands bared receiver.

The NC-300 will go well with your Viking II. They are built like a tank and are known for their great sensitivity.
And if you want better sensitivity, close to what today's transceivers have to
offer, you can always add a preamplifier to the receiver, along with any
protection you'd need to prevent a transmission from overloading the preamp and
possibly destroying it.
