Barbecue Preparations At Sterling Park
Good morning to all, for those of you who have been around for a while you remember when we used to go out to the clubhouse and take care of the landscaping. Because the clubhouse has been unavailable to us and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future, that is no longer the case. We have been holding our general meetings at Sterling Aviaton , in an area named Sterling Park. Last week I had the opportunity to speak with Jami Bruno, Mike Bruno‘s wife. I offered our chapter’s resources to help Sterling with trimming some of the landscaping in Sterling Gardens. What needs to be done is some weed whacking and general cleanup. I have set Friday afternoon between four and five to do some of his work. If you could help out please respond to rjlbap@.... Ron

JR's Service Announcement to EAA Members
To All, Longtime EAA393 member JR Gibbs has gone west recently. For those of you who wish to pay your respects, I have attached the information from his wife Bethi. Please see the attached. Ron Lem President EAA393 ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Harvard & Sara Holmes <HarvardHolmes@...> Date: Fri, Jul 16, 2021 at 9:34 AM Subject: JR's Service Announcement to EAA Members To: Ron Lem <RJLBAP@...> CC: <HarvardHolmes@...> Ron, I have not yet received an email announcement to members about JR's service next Tuesday 20 July. Do you still plan to send out a message to the members? I spoke with Marilyn Sperling last night. She and Dick are not planning to attend due to health issues. This MAY change. If so, here is what Bethi sent: J.R.'s service is Tuesday 20 July at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620 Arrive at 1 PM at the Admin building and we will be escorted to the pavilion. The service is from 1:30 to 2 PM. There will be seating for 20 under the shade. CDC mask rules apply, if vaccinated, no mask required, if not vaccinated Mask required. I am recommending a mask anyway. It will be hoot and breezy with pollens. A water spray bottle will help with cooling. Thanks, Sara I hope that you are enjoying yourself in WI.

General Meeting At Sterling June 23rd, 2021
Greetings to All, Sterling Aviation has graciously offered to let our chapter use their facility for this month’s general meeting. A potluck dinner will be served at 6:00 followed by guest speaker Ryan Baillie who will discuss emergency landings. Bring your stories and be ready to share them! Ok, that is the good news folks, the unpleasant news is that we need some members to step forward and help bring supplies from the clubhouse to Sterling Aviation on Tuesday as Lucy wants to have Wednesday available to set up the tables, chairs, tablecloths, flowers etc. A different group is needed to return the supplies to the clubhouse after the meeting. I personally helped perform both these chores last month along with 6 other members. This month I am on a contract job in the city and can’t be in Concord to help out. So please step forward! Please help your chapter provide this entertains and enlightening event by emailing lucyhart552@.... Ron Lem President EAA393

Young Eagles Event This Saturday
Greetings to All, This Saturday, June 19th, our chapter will hold it’s second post Covid Young Eagles event at the PSA Maintenance Hangar located at 71 John Glenn Drive. Last month’s event was a great success with over forty Young Eagles being flown. Please help us this Saturday by working the flight line, being a safety observer, helping manage registration and escort kids out to the airplanes. It’s a great way to meet other like minded folks! For those of you with airplanes, the donation of your time and fuel will go far in helping young people experience the aviation dream. Many of our kids go on to careers in different aspects of aviation and our chapter provides scholarships to those who excel in the local community. Again your time and resources will be greatly appreciated! Check in time for pilots is 8:30 but we will have safety briefings throughout the day. Lunch and beverages are provided as well as a great aviation related experience. Ron Lem EAA393

The Romantic Catalina Experience
Stephen Tucker is proposing a Young Eagles event on Catalina Island. Stephen said the target date for the Catalina Island trip-Young Eagles event is in the first week of August--either on Saturday the 7th or a back-up day in that week. The local people said the weather in the first week of August is pretty good but that it gets more variable as the month progresses. That date will be firmed up as volunteers for the event come forward. Willing pilots from #393 need to contact Stephen right away so he can finalize arrangements with the kids/families, schools, buses, and hotels on the island. As a side note, the residents are apparently so eager to make this work that they would be willing to take pilots into their private homes if necessary.. Anyway, it sounds like an amazing event that our chapter could put on that would be memorable and inspiring for the kids as well as us. Contact Stephen at: StephenF4E@... or (925)586-5977. Ron

First Post Covid In Person General Meeting May 26th At Sterling Aviation
Greetings to All, EAA Chapter 393 will hold it’s first in person general meeting Wednesday May 26th at 6:00. It will be a potluck so please rsvp with what type of dish you will bring. In addition to the potluck, Bill O’Brian, Tracy Peters and President Ron will be barbecuing hamburgers, hot dogs and salmon. As of this writing, 26 members have RSVP’D, join us in this post Covid reunion! 2020 Air Academy award winner will be there to meet and greet chapter members. Hannah was denied her opportunity to attend the 2020 Air Academy at Oshkosh due to Covid-19. After discussing Hannah’s situation at our last board meeting, the board approved a motion to provide Hannah with funds that would have been used for the 2020 Air Academy to be used instead for flight training at a school of her choosing. Because the amount of money exceeds what the board can authorize, it will be up to the membership to authorize the funds. This will be voted on at the chapter meeting. Additionally, Jim Agua, our chapter technical advisor will have a presentation regarding mentoring young adults in aviation related activities. I’m sure you will find his presentation interesting. Jim is an Airframe & Powerplant mechanic with Inspection Authority and a great resource at the airport. As always, I’m looking for volunteers to help set up tables and chairs before the event and take them down after the event, please email me if you can help out. I look forward to seeing all of you who decide to attend! Ron Lem President EAA393

Young Eagles Event May 15th At Pacific States Aviation
Greetings to All, Chapter 393 will hold it’s first Young Eagles event in 18 months at Pacific States Aviation. More specifically, the event will be held outside the maintenance hanger which is located in between the flight school and the FBO. The event starts at 9:00 am, but we will be setting up for the event starting at 7:00 at the clubhouse picking up chairs, tables, canopies and other miscellaneous items. From there we will proceed to PSA and start setting everything up. The Civil Air Patrol will not be available to act as ground support personnel so we need members and their friends and family to step up to the plate and help out for this important event. Here in Contra Costa County we are truly fortunate in being able to safely and legally hold this event. CDC guidelines along with EAA National protocols will be followed including the wearing of masks when appropriate, wiping down aircraft in between flights, hand sanitizing and social distancing. With some exceptions, pilots and volunteers must be vaccinated, while kids are required to wear masks in the cockpit. Board members will not be asking people if they are vaccinated, rather we will trust that those that those participants are in compliance. Moving on, it is our hope to be able to hold additional Young Eagles events in June, August, September and weather permitting, October of this year. This will provide aviation related and social experiences for our young people, something they have missed in the last 15 months! Air Venture will be held at Oshkosh, Wisconsin from July 25th, through August 1st of this year! So far, ten of our chapter members will be attending. However the Air Academy has been cancelled again due to logistical hurdles relating to Covid which could not be overcome. Hannah Nilsen, our Chapter 393, 2020 scholarship awardee was deprived of her attendance at the 2020 Air Academy. We are reaching out to her to find a way to provide an appropriate substitute award. Stay tuned. That’s it for now, please call me at 925-395-0672 for any questions or clarifications. Ron Lem President EAA 393

Young Eagles Event May 15th, 2021 At PSA Maintenance Hanger
Greetings to All, After a one year hiatus, our chapter will be resuming Young Eagles events with the first one on on May 15th. There is a considerable amount of ramping up (pun intended) involved and some of our volunteers are not available. We are asking for volunteers for the ground crew which will be escorting personnel to and from the airplanes, Set up personnel who will assist in setting up tables and chairs and registrars who will assist with checking in the Young Eagles and their parents. Additionally we need a gate monitor who will provide security at the gate as well as take the temperatures of the Young Eagles. We will have a Covid screening process in place as well as providing cleaning materials to sanitize the planes in between flight. All activities except for the actual flights will be outdoors following the latest guidelines as provided by the CDC. I apologize for the short message but have to attend to other duties this time. Ron Lem President EAA393
