Greetings to All! I would like to start off by thanking everyone who showed up to honor Bill Bower’s at last month’s General Meeting. I could tell from the look on Bill’s face that he was truly pleased and it was well deserved. The attendance was 35 which is an excellent number for February, a month which also brought some great flying weather! The Board meeting started off with Bill Obrien taking on the subject of the Cleco Newsletter updates. Bill is soliciting pictures from the membership of their aircraft, projects and stories associated with them. On the National level, EAA National is asking for stories related to any of the following: . Individual pilots making their first trip to Oshkosh, · A community restored aircraft being flown to Oshkosh · Chapter members mentoring the next generation of aviators · Chapter veterans with unique stories Bill commented that he would contact certain members with stories along the above guidelines. Next up was Treasurer Harvard Holmes with a report that the chapter is in sound financial condition. Secretary Pete Mitchell who also worked on the Contra Costa County Election staff during last weeks primary gave his Secretaries Report Stephen Tucker and Rose Desmond were present and discussed the Young Eagles Event which is scheduled to be held at Byron on March 21st with the Patriots. Both Rose and Stephen share a great deal of enthusiasm for this years’ YE events. The new email system is up and running after burning some midnight oil with Harvard Holmes. It wasn’t actually midnight, but we did finish late into the evening, far beyond my normal bedtime which I will not disclose. Lucy Hart demonstrated how to sign up for scrip.com. It is quite simple: go toe scrip.com and hit sign up! you will be asked a minimum of personal information and a credit card number. Escrip does not ask for the expiration date or the code on the back! That’s it. When you go to one of the almost 200 restaurants listed in the directory, use the credit card that you put on file with scrip.com. The chapter will automatically receive a percentage of the bill. To test this program the Board has elected-at it’s own expense- to have the next Board meeting at a local restaurant. VMC Coordinator Greg Karamanougian ( the first person who can correctly pronounce Greg’s last name gets the last cookie at the next General Meeting…!) spoke on the VMC Club. We will have a VMC presentation during the last thirty minutes of the dinner at the General Meeting. I’m hoping that Paul will be able to check in with regards to the IMC club. Speaker for the General Meeting will be the physical presentation of the Sonex at the clubhouse. This will be followed by Lee Apaca of Team Light Aviation located in Rio Vista. Team Light Aviation specializes in Experimental and Light Sport Aircraft Maintenance and Repair. They are located in Rio Vista. In regards to the Sonex, the current plan is to tow the aircraft to the Clubhouse for all the members to look at and ask questions about the plane and the building process. Thanks to Bennett Ashley, we have new postings on Facebook. For those of you who don’t have a Facebook account Bennett can post your airplane pictures and videos for you. For those of you already on Facebook you can post your videos, pictures and stories at EAA 393. We appreciate Bennett! In regards to Social Media, here's something strange: yesterday I tried to sign up for Twitter. When I put in my email address, Twitter came back with "account already exists". I hit "forgot my password" and the next message which I assume was a password reset request came back in Russian! True story folks. Sacramento Airshow- Discussions continue about the Sacramento Airshow. Current discussions center around what our chapter will do at the airshow. Hot dogs have been a money maker in the past provider they are bought from the right source (read Costco). The logistics are being explored with the idea being that some members (read volunteers) will bring up the supplies while other members (read volunteers!) could fly in and do the preparation

Ron Begin forwarded message: Hi Ron, Shelter-in-Place and GA Flying To understand what the Shelter-in-Place order might mean for our flying, we have to look at the entire document, not just stop with the first paragraph. And we have to consider both the intent and the words of the order. The underlying intent is to avoid travel that involves possibility of contagion. Flying your airplane, or driving your car, does not present that risk. Note the following specific language in section 10: "individuals may leave their residence only to perform any of the following “Essential Activities ... iii. To engage in outdoor activity, provided the individuals comply with Social Distancing Requirements as defined in this Section, such as, by way of example and without limitation, walking, hiking, or running." I don't know how y'all fly, but my flying is all an outdoor activity, and I make EVERY effort to stay at least six feet away from any other person while flying!! I think taking along folks from your personal household is no greater risk than sitting across the breakfast table from them. Taking along others? Unless you have a really big airplane, the social distancing requirement will prevent that. So I think continuing GA flying meets both the intent and the letter of the shelter in place order. Each of us makes our own decisions, naturally... but telling people shelter in place means they can't fly? Not supported by the intent or the words of the order. Note: Bay Area restaurants are closed, except for delivery or takeout orders. It is possible of course to fly to other jurisdictions where restaurants at or near the airport remain open for business as usual. To my mind, flying to eat at a restaurant violates the spirit of the order... and since the exemption for the essential activity of outdoor activity requires social distancing, unless the tables are all six feet apart, I think also violates the letter of the order as well. But, fly a picnic lunch to an airport with a picnic table? Follow the social distancing rules, and have at it! Paul

Greetings to All, First of all I want to express my hope that all of you guys and gals are doing well and staying safe while the Shelter In Place order is in effect. I have not heard any reports of any of our members being infected with this deadly virus. I hope that is the case. Like you all, my life has been greatly affected in that it has restricted where I go, who I can go with and what I can do when I get there, wherever "there" is. Like everyone, I watch the news, but nowadays I limit the amount of news that I watch or listen to, looking mainly for facts about the disease and how it is affecting our local community on a daily basis. This is important to me because the work that I do has been deemed an essential service and I need to know how to stay safe while performing those services. Unrelated to the pandemic, it is with great sadness that I have to announce the passing of two of our long time members, JR Gibbs and Bob Belche. JR Gibbs passed away on April 2nd after a long courageous battle with cancer. Bob Belche followed him West the following day according to his daughter. As soon as I receive information regarding services for both JR and Bob, I will pass the information along. Both men were greatly loved and respected in our chapter. People, one day in the hopefully not too far future, we will be over this pandemic, and in the meantime it is important for us to stay in touch with each other and insure that Chapter 393 continues to exist and function. This means that we will have the April General meeting to conduct chapter business and have a VMC presentation to stimulate aviation related thought and lively discussion. Your Chapter Board has decided to hold this month's General Meeting on the regular third Wednesday of this month which is the 22nd at 7:00 pm. You may be asking "Ron how is that even possible?" It is made possible by the internet, more specifically Zoom. This may cause some angst among you guys, so let me share with you that the board has held two meetings on Zoom with good results. For those who are new to Zoom or indeed new to the idea of an online meeting, we have a solution for helping members to check in to the meeting on Zoom. Starting Sunday evening, the following members have volunteered to make themselves available as Personal Assistants to help those of you who wish to participate sign in to Zoom. I will get to who those volunteers are and what area they will specialize in (PC or Mac/Apple) in a moment. What I want to emphatically emphasize is that Zoom is free and does not require any type of registration. If you want to participate, you will need a password which will be provided to you via the Zoom invitation that will be sent out. Greetings to everyone! I have to admit that I am at a bit of a loss as to how to begin this message. Our chapter finds itself in the worst medical event in our lifetime. Our freedoms have been restricted in the interest of saving people’s lives which only goes to demonstrate to me how privileged I am to live in this country. As an essential provider, I have learned that if someone is angry about the current state of affairs, that they don’t need to know my opinion, rather, they just need to be heard and then be shown some empathy. They don’t need my opinion! I belong to a number of different organizations and recently received a notification that a local event in one of the states had to be cancelled due to restrictions imposed by the government (no, I’m not talking about Airventure). In the email put out by the leader of the group, he went on a rant about the local government. While he is certainly entitled to his opinion and he may have good reasons for his disturbed emotional state, including them in his email which was put out on a national level was wrong. My initial inclination was to send him a response with my opinion, but after thinking about it I decided to let him have his rant. I’m pretty sure that once he calms down, he will realize that he exposed himself to several thousand people, most of whom he doesn’t even know. This will open hime up to criticism and eventually an apology. Otherwise the Organization will be tainted. This brings me to our chapter; before the onslaught of this virus our chapter was growing and I as your new president felt a certain amount of excitement about the chapter’s future. Changes were being made and will continue to reach out to the next generation and bring them into our chapter. That means we must make certain that all members feel comfortable. From my position that means political discussion is not appropriate in a meeting setting. We are not at EAA Chapter meetings to discuss our political views; rather we share a common love of aircraft and all things aviation. Have I been guilty of the above mentioned conversation? Yep and I make a commitment to you now that I will not engage in such conversation in the future at chapter meetings. Again, please refrain from political conversations at chapter meetings, be respectful of others. Ok, enough of that, lets move on. According to the treasurer’s report given by Harvard Holmes, our chapter is in excellent financial condition. Pete Mitchell gave the secretaries report and stated that we have 89 members. I would like to take the opportunity at this time to welcome new member Bob Hubbard. Hopefully we will have a bio on him soon. At this time out of 89 members 78 have paid their dues. If you have not paid your dues and are financially sound please pay them. $30 to the chapter and $40 to the national. If you have been financially affected by the health crisis, please shoot me an email or text me at 925-395-0672. We will have a way to help you with your dues. Young Eagles was represented by Stephan Tucker and Renee. No event is scheduled for May but we are holding out hope for June. Tracy Peters has tested several inexpensive PC computers and a printer. The total for three computers and the printer is around $600. This will be brought up and voted on at the general meeting this month. Stu Schuster has graciously donated a YAESU handheld radio for the ground personnel at the YE events. Thank you Stu! The Newsletter continues along its path as a quality production by Bill Obrien. Both Bill and EAA National are looking for stories to put in their newsletter and monthly magazine. This is your chance for fame! Lucy Hart was present for fund raising and it was agreed that we will not solicit the membership during the times of crisis. Greg K. was present as master of ceremonies of the VMC Club. Mark is a Marine attack helicopter pilot who saw service in the Middle East. Members of the Squadron include five pilots located at Concord and other pilots from the Norcal area. About the B2OSH Group: The B2OSH Group is a nationwide group of Bonanza pilots who train throughout the year to fly in close formation. They hold the world’s record for the largest civilian formation flight which stands at 157 aircraft.
