Re: Daniel family of Rowan County, NC

The introduction a possible mother, Mary Ambrose, of Ambrose Daniel was originally just speculation published by Worth Ray and Charles Brunk Heinemann. There was never any primary record evidence to support the existence of a Mary Ambrose.

Originally, Ray and Heinemann speculated that Ambrose was possibly a son of Moses Daniel, son of William Daniel 1680-1765 and Miss Williams of Essex/Caroline. There was never any primary record evidence to link Ambrose Daniel to the Essex/Caroline Daniels, though. No idea how they could have arrived at this mistake as examination of court order books in Caroline County clearly shows that Moses Daniel died unmarried, leaving no children. This may have been an assignment made only because there was a prominent Ambrose family in Caroline County, Va.

Some few Caroline Daniels did pass through Halifax VA/NC on their way to settling in western Virginia and Kentucky but that was a very brief presence and most of the records are for Walker Daniel who was a member of the Halifax legislature, an attorney and surveyor. He was also in records in Charlotte County, VA.

Before Y DNA testing there was a lot of unsupported speculation about who belonged to who and much of it proved to be incorrect.

The idea that Peter Daniel may have married an Ambrose does not have any support, either. I worked with Payne Daniel on the Brunswick/Dinwiddie/North Carolina bunch that Ambrose was connected to and we were leaning more in the direction of Peter Daniel having married a Randall. Unfortunately, there is no smoking gun in primary records in Virginia to suggest who was the wife of Peter Daniel or mother of Ambrose Daniel. I will have to go back and check our email chain to see where we finally ended up on this family.
