The Rouses Point yard engine was almost always a "steamer." Even in the summer, the sleeping cars on 9 and 10 needed steam heat. The steam generator was usually kept fired up at low heat in the winter

Yes, the D&H did put the "Passenger Protection" engines to use at the yards in Whitehall as well as Rouses Point and/or Plattsburg. I suspect the shop forces made sure the steam generator was

It has exterior radiator shutter hinges which were only on the D&H's 601-609. The 610-618 had interior shutter hinges.

Did the passenger protect engine also double as the yard engine? If so, I assume the fireman was also responsible for monitoring the steam generator to make sure it was ready in case needed.
