The Rouses Point yard engine was almost always a "steamer." Even in the summer, the sleeping cars on 9 and 10 needed steam heat. The steam generator was usually kept fired up at low heat in the winter

Did the passenger protect engine also double as the yard engine? If so, I assume the fireman was also responsible for monitoring the steam generator to make sure it was ready in case needed. Rick
