Oldest Dalton has been found.
36
Hi guys. On one of the Face book user groups a guy came up with some pictures of a Dalton. Turns out its a Lot 2 serial number 4. That makes it the oldest Dalton known of. Its a much modified lathe unfortunately. Riser blocks have been put under the head stock and tail stock to make it a 9 inch lathe rather than the 6 inch it started out in life as. It also has a Lot 4 end door cross slide and compound slide. Funny thing is its still in all its original finish. I will try and steal pictures of Facebook and post them if I can. Also the lathe is so early that its has its lot and serial number stamped on the front bed way not the rear and is also stamped Lot 1 so this makes it a lathe that started out as the very first ones built and then Dalton must have decided to call the combination machine Lot 1 and the first little 6 inch lathe Lot 2. I would love to have gotten my hands on this little lathe unfortunately its in the hands of a rank beginner and he is only interested in making parts with it and has no intentions of restoring it or bringing it back to its original condition. 1918 Dalton Type B4 - with no serial #
7
My 104 year old (born in 1916) Grandfather died last week and I now have a Dalton lathe that he owned and loved for most of his life. He told me the story of picking up the lathe during the Great Depression when - I believe he said - the lathe was being phased out or replaced by the shop (I believe in NY) - that had been using it. He died with a piece of brass still in the machine - he enjoyed making candle sticks with the lathe. I was trying to determine what lot and serial # were marked on the lathe - but I can¡¯t seem to find it where I believe it should be. Here are some photos of the lathe and the area where I thought the serial # should have been. Any ideas what this lathe is and why there doesn¡¯t appear to be a serial #? I measured the distance from the center of the work piece to the top rail - also shown below.

I was told this is a 1917, the saddle and crosslide and everything move smoothly and seem to be not heavily worn. There is not alot of backlash on the handles and there is no wear grooves in the beginning of the bed. it runs and comes with a handful of the change gears which i guess are impossible to find anywhere!! 3-jaw chuck operates smoothly. Lakeville, MN. (10 minutes south of the Mall of America) $750

UK - Swindon Lot 2 cast Iron base
4
Is anyone interested in making an offer on a cast iron base for a Lot 2 lathe? I¡¯m happy to ship it at cost but it¡¯s definitely a pallet job! Very heavy obviously. I¡¯ve got a Lot 2 but no room for the base. Literally stepping over myself as it is.

Unintentional Unsubscribe messages
I copied this originally sent by Scott Logan over in the Lathes group. This was sent over a year ago, but it still applies today. When you receive the emails sent to the group, sometimes your own provider (Yahoo, MSN, Comcast, AT&T, Microsoft, etc.) may file the message in your spam folder. As a Yahoo user, I know this happens, it has happened to me. This, in and of itself, is not a problem. When it becomes a problem, is when you delete these messages directly from the spam folder. When you do, groups.io (our group provider) gets notified and you are automatically removed from the group. You also get another email from groups.io explaining what happened and this email includes a link to rejoin the group. Lathe info

Hi Dennis What make is that dark blue lathe? It has a lot of features that a belt drive lathe should have. Helical back gears, carriage slots, multiple slots on the cross slide. Not so sure about the square tailstock barrel, which looks like it has a small (#2 MT?) taper hole, but I guess that you can't have everything. Herb Kephart

Before and after. Another saved from the scrap. Joy to operate now. Total restoration work time approx 35 (real) hours start to finish. But that also includes all the tooling, saw table, steady rest, milling attachment, 4 jaw chuck and tail stock drill chucks and other accessories etc etc.

Backing plate availability

Hi Dennis, Wondering if you might have a spare 5¡± backing plate for a buck chuck available? My old 5¡± chuck is pretty much past end of life - worn jaws etc. so think8ng about buying a new Buck, if I can find a compatible backing plate. Thanks! Glenn Brooks, up in Woodinville.

Spindle Nose Adapter for Lot 4
3
Hey guys, it has been a little while! I have been enjoying reading the conversations. I am wondering if anyone has drawings and/or specs for a 1" 12 TPI adapter that converts the Dalton Lot 4 spindle to a more standard 1 1/2" 8 tpi. Mine cracked and I am having trouble getting good measurements. Possibly someone has made these and could assist me. My Hendey is currently out of commission and now I can't chuck up my Lot 4 so I am kind of stranded LOL I look forward to hearing if there is anything out there. Here is my little machine for reference. Dennis was a great help and valuable resource for me in my greatest times of need when I brought this lathe back from the dead..

Finally operational!...
5
All, After 3 years of picking away at it, I finally have my Lot 4 fully functional! The machine has been completely torn down, blasted, painted and reassembled. With some help from Glen and a couple other members of the group, I've repaired the spindle gear, back gear and machined a replacement compound rest. There are a couple items still missing but I'll find or make replacements eventually, most notably a gear cover, two of the 'quick nuts' and a couple of change gears. I'll make a better step pulley for the countershaft at some point too. I've attached a couple photos and a short video of the lathe running. Enjoy! John Hinton

bearing tolerance
5
All I've left to do on my Lot 4 is tend to the spindle bearings. If I tighten the caps the spindle turns with a lot of drag.I was wondering if there is a recommended torque for the caps and if Bert used shims in his original designs.I can find these by trial and error but I thought I'd ask to save a bit of time.Be wellLarry

5¡± cushman chuck
3
Hi all, I have a 5¡± Cushman three jaw scroll chuck on my lot 4 Dalton. The jaws are quite worn and basically useless at this point. My guess is the chuck is original to the lathe. Is there anyway to buy new jaws for the chuck? The number stampEd on each of the jaws is: 293. I assume this might be the SN of the chuck, or possibly the number of the jaw set. Or, is it basically toast... Also, can the backing plates on these old Cushmans be used as is on a new chuck- say a 5¡± Bison? If so, what make/model of chuck is known to be compatible...? Thanks very much for any info you can send my way. Regards Glenn Brooks Woodinville, Wa
