Hi Guys(and gals, I just recently purchased a Dalton lathe at a estate sale and in doing research found the site Oldarn, and Andy from there sent me here to say hi. It seems like I made a good investment in my lathe, but I'm missing the countershaft and motor. I can find a motor, but the countershaft seems to be a challange. If anyone can help me out here with any suggestions(about the lathe, NOT the ones my wife usually has for me) they would be appreciated. If I can't find the countershaft, I may have to shelve the machine and look for another one. I think she deserves better than that though(the wife, that's another story. Thanks for letting me babble here. I'll see if I can set up a album with a few pictures, including the home made coutershaft attempt that came with the lathe. Nick DeBenedetto Woodbridge, NJ

HELP, I have an ancient Root & Vandervoort lathe........ 2
This has been in my garage probably since my great-grandpa lived there. I don't know anything about old lathes, and thought one of you Dalton enthusiasts could give me some pointers on selling it.?? Somewhere in the garage we found a small wooden box full of parts for the lathe [cutting tools or something?]. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL. I'd hate to haul it to the scrapyard, if someone would want to love it. thanks, cari

Mitutoyo dial calipers
Hello all, I have a Mitutoyo dial caliper that I just took apart to clean. Seems there was a spring hiding in there. It looks like it goes in between the two gears that are on the opposite side of the dial face. I believe it has something to do with the shock proof mechanism, but , I don't know how it goes back together. These are no. 505-637-50 dial calipers. I'm looking for an exploded parts view, or the patent #, or some Mitutoyo patent #'s pertaining to the dial calipers, or, someone to tell me how that spring goes in there. Can anybody help me out on this? Dave

Nice looking B-6 on Ebay
There is a B-6 currently listed on Ebay. It has the cast iron stand and possibly a Dalton overhead drive. Not sure the drive is listed as part of the auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-DALTON-LATHE-NJ- NYC_W0QQitemZ280140225452QQihZ018QQcategoryZ13876QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem Jim

aluminum bushings
Can aluminum be used for headstock bushings if there is enough oil ? My bronze bushings were way too far gone and now there is a delrin bushing in their place with surprisingly good results. Aluminum
Can aluminum be used for headstock bushings? The bronze ones were far too gone to be used anymore so I'm looking for alternatives. Need picture! 8
I need a picture of the milling arbor used on the Dalton Combination Machine. Mine did not come with one and I'm not sure what type it takes, or how it looks. Thanks for any help, PK.

New member - introduction
Greetings to all, I've only just joined this group having bought a lot 2 lathe through eBay UK about 18 months ago. Messages 122 and 123 refer to it. I've got it set up and running, but I'm not happy with the bench I built for it, and when I find time (in between family, work and playing with 2ft gauge steam locos) I intend to construct some new benching for it to sit on. Getting it working well is a longer term project really, as I've no immediate use for it - rather its a "nice to have." Any machining requirements I have at present I can do at work - I teach Design & Technology in a high school. The guy I bought it from had owned for some years and replaced with a Myford ML7 a friend had sold him. As mentioned previously, the lathe has been modified at some time, and probably suffered some damage. When I get round to it I'll post some photos for analysis and comment. Nick Griffiths

I need collet closer parts photos. 3
Although the photo files are extensive, can anyone refer me to a file, photo or sketch of the collet closer/holder parts? Whose machine should I look closer at in the archives? Thanks Mike

thanks for the photos guys,but..... 2
....perhaps my lathe was used differenly. I have in my box of goodies, a bunch of collets and an adapter like a morse 1-2 that fits in the spindle. There are no threads on the collets to take them up tight. I think perhaps there may have been like a cap type collar that would go onto the spindle threads with a counter bore to help the aligning/centering issue. Not exactly a quick change collet though! Anyone familiar with this set-up. If it is what I think it is, I am apparently missing said collar I guess. any opinions?

The elusive 9 1/2 by 48 inch Dalton finally found
Hi guys Well we have finally found a 9 inch Dalton. Its sitting 15 miles from Pittsburgh and was on eBay very briefly yesterday but a quick email and a phone call secured the lathe for restoration and display. The lathe is a bench model with no drive or any accessories that we know of so far. The lathe at one time had a lever collet closer on it but now has a hand wheel closer with nose piece and thread protector but little ells. Last year I found an end door and a set of change gears and one head stock clamp to a 9 inch and up till now that is all we had. The Lathe will be moved to Oregon by Forward Air in a few weeks and I can do a proper assessment and let all know what we have. This lathe has been in the owners family for a very long time and is being sold by the grandson of the original owner. We do not know as yet if he was the original purchaser or not. The lathe is a post 1925 constructed lathe as it has South Beach CT on the gear chart. I will put a few picture of it up on my photo site for you guys to take a look at. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45888076@N00/?saved=1 Will post more information on the lathe as soon as I find out more about it. Lot 4 B-4 in Wisconsin 3
Hi All Well I did it again. I won the lathe that was up for bid with the overhead drive. The wife and later this spring will be traveling to Wisconsin and Ohio. I will finally get a chance I hope to meet Andy Sargent and also Steve Wells of the South Bend group. I will be hauling a load of lathe stuff East and then bringing the Dalton home from Wisconsin. The Wisconsin lathe should make a great display and will be added to the other Dalton's on display at Turk Mfg. Inc. in Hillsboro Oregon. Will keep you posted on how things turn out. Dennis Turk.

this is facinating 2
Just want to say hi to everyone. I just aquired a lot#4 ; no. 300 Dalton lathe in very good condition. In searching the internet for info, I stumbled onto Oldarn.com where I found Dennis Turk who gave me a wealth of information. I had no idea this machine was such a celebrity. I bought this one as the main machine in my home shop. It seems to be a well built lathe.

pics 2
I just put some pics of the dalton here I recently aquired. I won't be doing a full blown restoration but will be cleaning it up and making a few repairs. It is just temporarily set up in the pics to see how it runs. I will be moving it into my small shop in the spare room in my house as its permanent home. I will post more pics then.
