Re: New thread dials
Dennis Turk
开云体育Hi again
?
I forgot one thing.? This dial fits the Lot 2
3 4 and 5 B-4 lathes.? It also fits the Lot 6 B-6 lathe and also the Dalton
9 inch lathe.? It does not fit the combination machine.

New thread dials
Dennis Turk
Hi All
OK if you look at the photo section under thread dial you will see the thread dials I have been promising for two years. the one with the steel gear is an original that came with one of my lathes. The new one has a bronze gear rather than a steel gear. You will also see that the original was not adjustable as the gear was fixed to the shaft with a set screw. The new one is completely adjustable. The three originals I have the wittiness mark on the body is in different places on all three. What we did was provide a hole in the face of the dial were you can insert a 1/16 drill bit shank and it will engage a hole in the body. You will see that the number one is lined up with the wittiness mark. After you install the Dali in you lathe leave the self locking nut on the bottom of the gear a little lose and insert the drill shank in to the hole lining the dial up with number one position. Now move the saddle till the half nuts engage. Now move the gear into position on the lead screw and tighten the nut on the gear. Your thread dial is now aliened to your lathe. If it were to be moved to another lathe you would be able to adjust it to fit that lathe also. You will see that I am providing a new correct bolt to secure the thread dial to the apron. If any of you guys wont one of these they are $80 plus shipping. Email me at dennis.turk2 at verizon.net and I will put your name on the list. Out of the first assembled batch of six dials three have been spoken for so I have three left that can ship out as soon as payment arrives. Thanks and again sorry this took SO long. Dennis Turk |

Dalton thread dial gear being made
Dennis Turk
Hi guys
Just though you mite like to see how we are putting the gear teeth on the Dalton thread dial gears. The work is being done in one of our 5 axis vertical machining centers at Turk Mfg. I will post them to the photo section. If that does not work email me at dennis.turk2 at verizon.net and I will send them to you in an email. Enjoy. Turk |

Thread dials
Dennis Turk
Hi Guys
I was up at my business last Friday and by golly what did I see but Dalton thread dial gears having their teeth cut on one of the new five axis CNC mills. Only took two years. We made up parts for 24 threading dials but I only have six bodies assembled and ready to go. We also made a batch of the special square head bolts that hold the dial to the apron. We will include a mounting bolt with each dial. Looks like they are going to cost $85 plus shipping so if you would like one email me at. dennis.turk2@... The first six guys get one from the first batch. I am having a friend assembly the bodies so all I have to do is give Ratshooter the word and he will get the rest of the bodies assembled and painted and sent up to me and I will install the gear and ship them out. Sorry this took sooooooo long but good things never happen quickly. Dennis Turk |

Dalton in St Charles Mo
Dennis Turk
Hi All
Well we found and saved another Dalton. This time its a Lot 4 36 inch mounted on a head stock cabinet and a tail stock leg. The Lot 4 was equipped with the overhead bed mounted planetary drive we have seen so many images of but few complete units. This is the drive that has a large planetary gear set and two clutches. The clutch handle is mounted on the face of the silent chain guard and actuates the forward and reveres clutch that are mounted on the counter shaft. The Lathe came out of ITT technical institute apparently. It has all the ear marks of a school lathe. Yellow painted handles and topical compound and cross slide damage. Todd Young of St Louis Mo picked up the lathe for me. for doing all this Todd gets to keep the lathe but he is shipping me the overhead drive parts. These are the parts that were taken off the lathe you see on Andy Sargents Dalton site home page. That lathe by the way has not cut a chip since before 1922 when it had its drive removed and taken to a class room at USLA school of engineering in Ca. The lathe you see on Andy's web site is the very first Dalton restored and was the only one I knew of for several years until I ran into Andy Sargent as he had one. Seams these lathes of old Hubert's just keep falling out of the wood work. On another note Gay Taylor the lady that gave Andy and I the biography she had written about Hubert settled another mystery. WE have lathes with Sound Beach on them as well as South Beach. Gay told us that Hubert Dalton had an office in NY but the manufacturing plant was in Sound Beach, Fairfield County, CN, Here is a note from another email I got from Gay. 1. Sound Beach vs. South Beach, CN..... I can't explain, other than perhaps Dalton had a couple of facilities where he manufactured metal parts for his lathes, or perhaps he purchased them from a sub- contractor. I found references in the web for South Beach in New London County, CN, but unfortunately I just can't explain this. 2. My reference to Greenwich, CN below should read Old Greenwich - This is where Hubert Peck (nephew of Hubert Dalton) was born and raised. Hubert Dalton's sister Geraldine Dalton lived here with her husband, John Ferris Peck. The Peck family has a long and notable ancestry in Fairfield County, CN. Hubert Dalton was involved in a couple of events in Old Greenwich, CN: a) He donated the manse for the paster of the First Congregational Church (I believe) of Old Greenwich, CN. b) He built a plant here at one time, which he later sold to the Electrolux company for their mfg. facility. see: see: for reference to the Electrolux factory previously being owned by Dalton Lathe & Tool Company. See the paragraph that begins, "In late 1933, Electrolux ...... buildings previously owned by the Dalton Lathe & Tool Company...... Just some more interesting Dalton History Dennis Turk |

Re: Dalton Lathe for Sale

开云体育Hi All
?
Joe sent me a picture?of the Lot 6 Dalton he
has.? He knew very little about them so I?gave his some links so he
could see a little history about the brand.? The price is fair that he is
asking.? Again?the Lot 2 3 4 and 5 lathes use 20 pitch change gears
that are very had to come by.? Were as the Lot 6 and 8 use fairly standard
change gears but Joe's does not have any with the lathe.? They are 16 pitch
1/2 inch wide and use many of the same gears that the early South Bend 9 inch
does.? There are a couple of odd ball gears in there set but these can be
gotten from Boston Gear or Browning who still make change
gears.?The?odd ball tooth numbers?used by?Dalton Lot 6 and 8
lathes are 30 and 35 tooth gear.? These gears tooth numbers?are not
found in SB Logan or Sheldon change gears sets. If early SB change gears are
used you will have to bore out the center hole and broach a new keyway as SB
used a 9/16 bore.? The Lot 6 and 8 use a gear with a 3/4 bore in them and
that is all that Boston and Browning make anymore is 16 pitch change gears with
3/4 bore.? They used to make there gear sets with three or more bore sizes
but now its just the larger size and you have to get there very expensive
bushing to size them down.? I have no knowledge of the condition of the
lathe that Joe has if one were in the area and interested I suggest that you
stop by Joe's and take a look at it.

Dalton TL lathe

New to group just got a Dalton TL. It has a 36in. bed, 20in. between
centers, 7in. swing, has a compound rest, tool post, a D.E. Whiton chuck, head #3 taper, tailstock #2 taper, also has a countershaft but not sure it is all there. On the end of bed is 10 158. I see that Dalton was in South Beach Conn., but the brass plate for the feed cutting table says Dalton Manufacturing Corp. Sound Beach Conn. Which is correct? Any information would be appreciated. Thank You, Richard |

Hello!
I recently got my Dalton up and running. I was looking for manual's
for the lathe when i stumbled upon oldarn.com. I saw the link to here so I thought i'd introduce myself. I bought one a few years back on my Dad's advice. I paid $450 for everything you see in the pictures (uploaded to the photo's folder under my name: Aaron Nedd). My dad helped me fabricate a mounting bracket for it as the existing one would not allow for changing of the belt (too tight). The original motor was missing but it came with a brand new one but no mounting for that either. So all the electrics were replaced with modern stuff including switch. Information on the lathe: Obviously a Dalton Six. Type B-4. Swing 7 1/2" Length is 36" i think. The end of the table says "Lot 5 No 294". I'm glad to see there are still people out there that value these old girls. Most of the tools in my woodworking shop are from the 1960's or older as the quality back then was far superior. thanks! ~Aaron Nedd Leo, IN |

Re: Combination Machine drive speed?
Dennis Turk
开云体育Hi John
?
The little B-4 Dalton setup the way the factory
meant it would turn around 480 rpm.? Even the Lot 6 and? 8 machines
did not turn over 700 so I would have to guess given the standard for that time
period and the tooling available your machine would have turn 600 to 700
rpm.? Remember the best they had back then was tungsten high speed
steel.? A lot of the tooling used back when?your machine was new was
forged case hardened steel.? Given the bearings on the combination machine
I would have to compare them to Flather and SB of the day and these lathe turned
in the 700 rpm range.? Even the SB 13 inch never turned more than 875 up
till production of it stopped in 1989.? I know today we would like to spin
our old lathes a little faster but be careful running much higher.? The
spindles are not all that hard and you dont have a constant lubrication system
like the TL Dalton or South Bend lathes built after 1939.
