Re: 1922 Lot 5 Dalton now on display
Verrrrrry nice Larry
?
Your lathe is a lot 5 machine and would have been
built after 1920 but before 1922.? In 1922 Dalton patent a special hinge
for the end door on the TL model lathe.? That patent is present on any
lathe built after 1921.? So I am going to say you have a low serial
number.? Remember Dalton used a separate set of serial numbers for each Lot
number of machine model. The lathe you see on my flicker site has the 1922
patent number but is serial number 263 so again is a low number as we have Lot 5
lathes with numbers?all the way to 6100.? Then ever time we think we
have old Hubert figured out he throws us a curve.??
?
You also have the bearing standards with the patent
oiling system.? What I mean is your countershaft setup.? You have the
cone pulley and the bearing standards that were part of the overhead
countershaft that came with these lathes.? The only difference it what you
have and what came with the lathe is your missing the forward and reveres
clutches and the handle to actuate them.? If you look inside the bearings
on the countershaft you will see a little ring about 1 1/2 inches in diameter
that rotates on the shaft.? This is what brings the oil up from the
reservoir under the bearing bore.? I have several of these and have yet to
find any wear in any of them.? Some of the old induction repulsion motors
used this same system for lubing the motor shaft bearings.? Only thing was
Dalton patent the idea for line shaft bearings.? South Bend used a very
similar bearing only they could not use the ring because of the Dalton patent so
they cut a keyway in the bearing and passed a felt wick from one end to the
other with the wick feeding down into the reservoir below the bearing.? I
just got a 10 inch Champion lathe built by the Blower and Forge company of
Lancaster Pa that has a different setup yet.? Champion used a flat spring
to hold a felt wick up against the shaft in the center of the bearing.?
This wick carried oil up from the reservoir below the bearing and as it ran out
the end of the bearing it was collected in groove around the end of the casting
and a drain back hole carried the overflow back to the reservoir.??
Lots of interesting things when it comes to all these old machines and all the
ways they came up with to lube them.
?
One other thing I would like all the guys that post
pictures to think about.? Try and be kind to your dial up guys but reducing
any picture files down to under 150KB as most of these guys on dial up there
servers will reject very large files.

Hi Larry
?
No its not important only tells me when
the lathe was built.? So if you patent tag is on the change door
then your lathe was built after 1918.? OK next question.?
How is the half nut handle afixed to the shaft?? There are three
versions.?? The first one the Handle is held on with a pin
pressed through the handle hub.? Second one the handle has a
keyway and there is a set screw that holds it on to the half nut
shaft.? The last one has the keyway but there is a boss cast onto
the handle hub that is split and there is a slotted screw that clamps
the handle hub onto the shaft. This was the last design and was used
to the end of production of the Lot 4 lathes as well as the Lot 5 6
and 8 machines. We only think the 9 1/2 inch machine is Lot 8 we have
not proved that yet as we only have one example here at my shop and
one in Washington?State but so?far that guy I cant even make
him?understand were the lot and serial number is located.?
Thats the 9 1/2 inch I am trying to talk him out of but he's not much
of a communicator.

Hi Larry
?
Yes I have the only stock of
spare parts.? If your latest patent date is 1917 then I
bet the patent tag is on the tail stock and not on the gear
door right????
?
Larry I have I think parts to
22 Daltons.? Complete machines in some cases but mostly
just parts lathes that were not complete when I got
them.? I do have some change gears but hate to let any
go especially a complete set.? You can also get gears
from Boston or Browning as they still make 20 pitch 14 1/2
degree change gears that you can use.? My very first
Dalton the one you see on the home page of Andy Sargents web
site most of the change gears on that lathe I got from
Boston gear.? When I restored that lathe the only ones
Andy and I knew of was his and mine.? That was almost
ten years ago and now I think we have found over 110
machines now with an example of every model Dalton
made.? We have found six of the combination machines
but only two of the Lot 8 9 1/2 inch swing 48 inch bed
models.? I have one and the other one I am trying
really hard to purchase but? have not talked the owner
into it yet."-))? His is incomplete as is mine but the
two would make one very complete cabinet based overhead
silent chain drive model.? Very much like the one you
see on my flicker photo site.? Just a lot
bigger.
?
As to the collet setup there
are several of the guys that have the draw bar setup like
you see on the 1922 machine.? The only known lever
collet closer setup is owned by a fellow in Indiana.? I
have not seen it personally but I do have pictures of
it.? Here is a picture of what it looks
like.

Dear Dennis,
Wow, thank you for the history lesson. I had no idea. I didn't think the gray was original. This is the real shiny, hard coat you see on most old machines then? I think I have seen old machinery with this not quite paint, black coating. Almost like an epoxy paint, but not quite. Thanks again.

Hi Dan
?
Like all machines built up to about 1932 the
Daltons were coated with Japanning.? This is not paint but more of a
mineral based coating.? It consist of 2 parts pure gum turpentine 2 parts
boiled linseed oil and 1 part powdered asphalt or asphaltum as it was known
as.? Some added a little pine tree rosin as a hardener.? The
turpentine dissolved the powdered asphalt and was also the pigment that gave the
mix the black color.? This was brushed on individual parts then left to air
dry over a two day period.? In that time the Japanning would lay out dead
flat and would fill all the casting flaws and pits and voids.? This one
thing is what distinguishes japanning from paint as no one? has ever made
paint act like japanning.? After air drying the parts would go through
three or four baking's with temperatures going all the way up to 350 to 400
degrees.? Some times I am told that in-between baking's the parts mite be
rubbed with pumas powder to smooth them.? Singer Sawing machines you see
that are black this is not paint as Singer was the masters of the japanning
art.? Singer continued to use japanning up into the late
fifties.
?
Japanning has a luster and caricature to it that I
have never been able to replicate with paint.? I get close but no
cigar.

Hi all
Today I received a complete TL Dalton apron. Kind of grunge but in original finish and complete and in nice shape. A fellow offered it to me for free and would not even let me pay the shipping. Soooooo if anyone needs a TL apron or parts to one let me know as I will pass this find on to who ever needs it or parts to it. First come first gets it.

Hmmm.. now I know what you mean about two piece... My change gear
cover apparently is two piece and has a different upper piece, that accomodates a guard for a quick change collet operator. I can't seem to locate my lower door right now, but it is missing a chunk out of it. I wouldn't mind a standard upper piece, since I doubt I'll be using the quick release collet adapter. The guard over the back gear/spindle would look like the one in
the referenced picture. Thanks, Ralph

Dennis,
I could use a cover for the change gears and also the
guard over the the left end of the back gear/spindle for the 7-1/4" lathe. Thanks, Ralph

I have maybe 10 lathes that I would consider parts lathes so fee free to ask. Yes I do have a few extra change gears but darn few as I haves sold off most of my extras long ago.
