Greetings to all,
?
I've only just joined this group having bought a lot 2 lathe through eBay UK about 18 months ago.? Messages 122 and 123 refer to it.? I've got it set up and running, but I'm not happy with the bench I built for it, and when I find time (in between family, work and playing with 2ft gauge steam locos) I intend to construct some new benching for it to sit on.? Getting it working well is a longer term project really, as I've no immediate use for it - rather its a "nice to have."? Any machining requirements I have at present I can do at work - I teach Design & Technology in a high school.
?
The guy I bought it from had owned for some years and replaced with a Myford ML7 a friend had sold him.
?
As mentioned previously, the lathe has been modified at some time, and probably suffered some damage.? When I get round to it I'll post some photos for analysis and comment.
?

Hi John, I looked at your combo pictures that are posted. Nice.
You
have much more tooling than I do. I live up here in Noxon, Montana.
I
found this machine at a local auction. An old machinest sold out and
he
had two buildings full of great stuff. Everything went real low. I
wish
I had seen your pictures before the auction as I see several pieces
that were sold seperately. The machine looks to be in good shape and
pretty tight. I plan to get it running this winter. I'll post some
pictures soon. PK

Hi All
?
Well now we have number six or seven lot six 8 1/2 inch swing Daltons now known of.? This size Dalton was built between 1915 and 1929.? In the small number we know of the serial numbers run from Rob Libby's 1915 #67 to my 1929 serial #7014.? Dalton used sequential serial numbers for each model or Lot number machine so six or?seven lathes out of over 7000 built makes these a very rare lathe. The spindle nose on these lathes are 1 7/8-8 just like SB used.? These lathes have spindles that are hardened and ground just like the later SB models.? They had very large bronze bushings on the spindle also.? These lathes do not have any power cross feed but the second feed rod that is driven by spur gears from the lead screw will give you very slow carriage feed thru its worm drive very much like a SB.? The collet closer that is shown in one picture is an original Dalton and it has the 3C adapter screwed into its end.? These lathes could use either 3C or 4C collets depending on which nose piece you installed into the spindle.? These were very well made lathes unlike there smaller brother the Lot 2 3 4 and 5 models which were aimed at the home shop market.? These were truly professional quality machines for the era.? This lathe though only a little over an 8 inch swing?weights well over 400 pounds.? There was one larger Dalton lathe built that? we think was the Lot 8 though no known example other than an end door exist today.? Yep I have the end door."-))))? The Lot 8 was a 9 1/2 inch swing lathe with a 4 foot bed and did share the same spindle nose and end gears of the Lot 6 but little ells.? The end gears on this Lot 6 are 16 pitch and are 9/16 wide and have a 3/4 hole so if this lathe does not have its end gears you could substatute SB 11 and 13 inch gears with a little work.
?
Just a little Dalton history for all you SB guys.? Owe by the way the salmon fishing tip this last week only netted me three nice 25 to 35# salmon.? Not all that good for seven days on the river.? I did manage to skunk my fishing partner though.? Poor Timmy Little fish? only had one dine and dash and no other bites.? Dine and dash for you none fisherman means you got your bate stripped.

Aluminum

Can aluminum be used for headstock bushings? The bronze ones were far too gone to be used anymore so I'm looking for alternatives. Malcolm.

aluminum bushings

Can aluminum be used for headstock bushings if there is enough oil ? My bronze bushings were way too far gone and now there is a delrin bushing in their place with surprisingly good results. Malcolm

Nice looking B-6 on Ebay

There is a B-6 currently listed on Ebay. It has the cast iron stand
and possibly a Dalton overhead drive. Not sure the drive is listed as
part of the auction.

Mitutoyo dial calipers

Hello all,
I have a Mitutoyo dial caliper that I just took apart to clean.
Seems there was a spring hiding in there. It looks like it goes in
between the two gears that are on the opposite side of the dial face.
I believe it has something to do with the shock proof mechanism, but ,
I don't know how it goes back together.
These are no. 505-637-50 dial calipers. I'm looking for an exploded
parts view, or the patent #, or some Mitutoyo patent #'s pertaining to
the dial calipers, or, someone to tell me how that spring goes in there.

Can anybody help me out on this?
Dave

Cari,
?
Just a few suggestions.
?
1. There may be information about your lathe on this website .
?
2. If you want to sell it, eBay is one way.
?
3.?Another way is through tool dealers that handle used equipment.
?
4. Also there are small companies or shops that sell items on eBay for individuals that do not want to handle all the details.
?
5. If you want to sell it yourself, several clear, in focus, pictures that can be used in e-mail or on eBay really help.
?
5a. One of the data plate with the manufacturers name and serial number.
5b. Also from the front, back, top. both ends, and close-ups of the headstock, carriage, tailstock, and the accessories.
5c. Placing a ruler or yardstick next to the item in the photos helps prospective buyers evaluate what they are looking at.
5d. A friend or neighbor,?who may be more familiar with machinery, may be able to?assist with measuring and defining the size and type on lathe.
5e. An estimate on weight and/or shipping is useful.? Unless the lathe weighs several tons, in which case contacting a used equipment dealer is probably the best choice.
5f. Include pictures of?documentation, manuals, even the original bill of sale, if you have them.
5g. You are selling both a machine and antique, so any and all details will help.
?
6. Unless you know what you are doing, removing rust, grease, and grime may do more damage then good.? Generally if the machine is not rusty it is worth more, but many lathes were made to precise measurements and over zealous cleaning can reduce the machine to clean scrap iron.

This has been in my garage probably since my great-grandpa lived
there. I don't know anything about old lathes, and thought one of you
Dalton enthusiasts could give me some pointers on selling it.??
Somewhere in the garage we found a small wooden box full of parts for
the lathe [cutting tools or something?].
ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL.
I'd hate to haul it to the scrapyard, if someone would want to love it.
thanks,
cari
