?
Those were the hot tickets when we were young.???? The goal was to get a LOT of autographs, some of them being very funny!!!!!!?????? Do any of you remember some of the verses????????

I think the donkey baseball games were mostly held in Kidron.??? That's the way I remember it.??? I only remember one game being held in Dalton at the park.??? I remember the carnivals at the baseball park.??? I really liked those.

Does your neighbor still "whitewash" his trees, Pat????? I don't think I have seen a white tree trunk in years, not even in Dalton.??
?
Did any of you go to the Wooster Armory to see wrestling matches???? Glenn and I went a few times; it was quite entertaining.??
?
Does anyone remember the radio station WWST??? You could request songs dedicated to someone you had a crush on at that moment.??? I remember as a Freshman I had a crush on?Louella Shane's cousin and I was constantly requesting songs on that station.??? Did anyone else do that??

I was thinking that I addressed this before regarding the drug store but YES I remember sitting on top of the newspapers which were stacked along the bottom and reading the comic books.? I usually got yelled at about sitting there but would come back again and do the same.? I also remember the thing where you put in a penny and got your fortune and?your weight.?? That was certainly a memorable place.?? I don't have any comic books but I do have a old rolling stone magazine from when Elvis died!? Does that count?? I?do remember having a few too many chocolate malts there too.?? I also would go there each day to buy a newspaper for my dad and had to go past the pool room and zoomed by as quick as I could as?my dad told me he never wanted to catch me in that place.?? Hello! It was too dark and smelly just walking by to lure me in.?? I always wonder what the heck our kids will remember about walmart...........so sad but we just had the best!

comic books and occasionally buy one for 10 cents. Donald Duck, Bugs
Bunny & Elmer Fudd, Superman, Batman, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers,
and other classics I don't much remember now.

Time marched on and then I remember buying Mad Magazine with Alfred
E. Newman (What, Me Worry?), Cracked Magazine and countless other

I don't think you were allowed to spend much time looking at the
comic books if you weren't buying them. Remember: this is not a

I still have some of those old comic books squirreled away somewhere
around my house.

Anyone else recall Scott's drugstore magazine selections? I guess
they probably also had Life, Look, Collier's, Saturday Evening Post,
along with other mundane selections.

However, in my mind, comic books ruled. Now the comics in the paper
are pretty much worthless. Not much to look at now in the Sunday
comics. I'm not sure if the rugrats these days even know what comics

I'm in a reflective mood tonight trying to recall the various
items we
had delivered to our home on East Main Street back in the
40's/50's.

Some of the stuff I remember:

Sterling bread (from Canton?). I remember the cracked wheat bread
that
came in the waxy wrapper (which you could use to wax the runners
on
your sleds). I think occasionally the delivery guy would attach a
Peter Wheat comic book to the bread. I think the Peter Wheat
character
was pretty dorky, but at the time he seemed neato.

Ideal milk (from Massillon?). The milk was full stregth with that
layer of cream on top. I think the bottle was sealed with some
kind of
cardboard top that kind of flipped up. Returnable bottles.
Imagine
that would be considered eco friendly recyling today. A good idea
at
the time but now too labor intensive.

Grit weekly newspaper. I think I tried delivering those papers
weekly
using my balloon tire orange Schwinn bike with the wire baskets
on the
sides to hold the papers. I believe the full retail price was 10
cents; the goofy delivery boy got to keep four cents (which
really was
a pretty good profit margin). The only problem was you had to
send in
the six cents to Grit headquarters every week, even though you
had a
problem collecting the full 10 cents from the customers (many old
tightwads around town who enjoyed stiffing the paperboy). That
old
bike was a cool bike. It had a horn button with a battery
operated
horn on it.

Charles potato chips in the big metal can. I still have the empty
can.

Various door to door salesmen who sold:

Electrolux horizontal vacuum cleaners and Kirby upright vacuum
cleaners.

Encyclopedias

Fuller brushes and Better brushes.

What other stuff do you remember that was delivered to your house
or
that some pesky door to door salesman tried to sell back then?

Yes, Riceland golf course is still there. Remember the Sohio gas station across from it? It's gone. Can't remember what has been built in the same place. Could just be an empty building. At the intersection of Route 30 at Riceland where the road coming out of Orrville and dead ends into the golf course, in that same northwest corner, just north of the Riceland Inn (corner building), Smucker's Jams and Jellies has built an outlet store. It is accessed from the road going into Orrville - the one that changed numbers.

I was a "broom" in the operetta. I had to wear this silly looking "grass skirt", which I hated. I had to "swish" up the pretend dirt on the floor. My Mom kept that grass skirt for many years, but finally threw it away. I can't

Hi Everybody:

Linda Fahrney/Freeland here! I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office." Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...

=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home. I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny
======
You all may have had another "Kissing" party at the Meisner home (don't remember where that was), but I went to the party at Connie and Dick Bodager's house and there were gobs of guys and girls there. (would be interesting if everybody would reveal if they were there or not). And yes, we played "Post Office" and must have been the first time for that game for me! Cause I've never forgot it. That's the memory I have when I drive by Connie's house even today.
I want to confirm Pat's stories about a lot of girls doing and learning to do acrobats in the old school house in the basement girl's bathroom. I remember doing that too! I know one time I did a flip with no hands and don't how I did that to this day. It's a wonder we didn't crack our heads on the cement floor and kill ourselves. Pat says we used a big rubber cushioned pad. I don't remember that - but maybe so. I remember that Karen, Connie, and Nancy W. were the best and were featured later on in some kind of a talent show (or maybe a side act to one of our operettas that we had.
By the way everybody, I got a call about two weeks ago on a Sat. morning and it was Karen Eckard Baer. We had a good visit on the phone and I told her about all the Yahoo group and how much fun it was. She said to say "Hi" to everybody. I asked her if she was not on line and she informed me that she was not a computer person. I usually see Karen or at least talk to her when I go home as she was my childhood friend (both her and Jeff Eckard) as we just lived across the field from their houses and we did some serious playing as young children. She is well and has a wonderful family and grandchildren that her and Mike visit often. She retired a couple of years ago from her beauty salon that she had in her house.
Speaking of operetta's - does anybody remember one we did when we were about 9 or 10 years old? I don't remember what grade that would have been. I had a pretty big part in it and I was a "Teakettle." Gwen, I remember you were in this one and was either a broom or a "Teapot." I had to sing a song and it started out "A teakettle's life is a merry one (and then I forgot the words) and just sang La, la, la, la, la, la, the rest of the song! I know the song of "I'm a Little Teapot- short and stout" was also sang. Don't remember any of the boy's parts. Also anybody remember the operetta - "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" with all the rats following. Let's hear from you if you do and who was in that one?????
More later from me...
Linda Freeland (Texas)

Ok you guys are killing me. I'm starting to flow with the memories, now comes the things we used to do that was not exactly good. I remember on halloween night time when we used to cruise the back country roads looking for corn shocks farmers put up. We used to practice our tackling by running thru fields and knocking them down. I remember one smart farmer who put stakes in the middle of the shocks, OUCH!

Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.

How about Lanny Rossiter? I remember the name. He dated a girl (?) in school and I remember everyone used to tease her about dating a jailbird because he spent time in jail. I believe that girl eventually dated Emer (Els) Royer from East Greenville who was my cousin. He served time in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and liked to hang out with the Dalton school kids. Any memories of him or her?

I remember parties where we used to place our hands over our mouths and noses and blow out emitting no air causing ourselves to pass out. That is why some of us are now brainless and lucky to be alive.

Lanny

Kate Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will always continue. I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan, Milton Burle, etc. We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan. That was then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour. My sister Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the Marimba. She was 18 at the time. Someone recently found an archive tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a copy.

Have a GREAT DAY!

'Nough for Now.

I played a lot of golf at Riceland. My Father-in-Law was a golf fanatic and Riceland was his "home" course. So I played there a lot. The last time I looked, the course was still there but that was two or three years ago at least.

How about Riceland? I remember when my brother and cousin Wade use to play
golf at Riceland before we got into high school. Is Riceland still there and did anyone else play there? Also I vaguely remember a high school bowling team, or am I halucinating?

Are we still talking about the tea pot operetta? I think I was a tea pot and I remember harlan and Merlin were in it too I think? I remember I think....that' s funny! Anyhow I still know the words to the song and can still remember tipping over when it was time........ .......I' m a little tea pot short and stout (well how true those words became) here is my handle here is my spout. When I get all steamed up then I shout...just tip me over and pour me out. And to this day I have a teapot collection. Any connection there? pjlee

Linda,
I was a "broom" in the operetta. I had to wear this silly looking "grass skirt", which I hated. I had to "swish" up the pretend dirt on the floor. My Mom kept that grass skirt for many years, but finally threw it away. I can't
remember who all was in that play. Anyone remember???? ?

Hi Everybody:

Linda Fahrney/Freeland here! I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office." Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...

=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home. I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny
======

Lanny I am glad I did not get involved in those parties. The only parties I remember are
Slumber parties where we played spin the bottle at Connie bodagers ............ ....and slumber parties at betty hostettlers ? And we walked to Orrville by the back roads by moonlight to the root beer stand. I know that more of you girls have slumber party stories so bring them on!

I'm playing it now on my vintage cassette deck. No "God Bless

You're right. Kate Smith lives on and on and on.

I'm in a reflective mood tonight trying to recall the various items we
had delivered to our home on East Main Street back in the 40's/50's.

Some of the stuff I remember:

Sterling bread (from Canton?). I remember the cracked wheat bread that
came in the waxy wrapper (which you could use to wax the runners on
your sleds). I think occasionally the delivery guy would attach a
Peter Wheat comic book to the bread. I think the Peter Wheat character
was pretty dorky, but at the time he seemed neato.

Ideal milk (from Massillon?). The milk was full stregth with that
layer of cream on top. I think the bottle was sealed with some kind of
cardboard top that kind of flipped up. Returnable bottles. Imagine
that would be considered eco friendly recyling today. A good idea at
the time but now too labor intensive.

Grit weekly newspaper. I think I tried delivering those papers weekly
using my balloon tire orange Schwinn bike with the wire baskets on the
sides to hold the papers. I believe the full retail price was 10
cents; the goofy delivery boy got to keep four cents (which really was
a pretty good profit margin). The only problem was you had to send in
the six cents to Grit headquarters every week, even though you had a
problem collecting the full 10 cents from the customers (many old
tightwads around town who enjoyed stiffing the paperboy). That old
bike was a cool bike. It had a horn button with a battery operated
horn on it.

Charles potato chips in the big metal can. I still have the empty can.

Various door to door salesmen who sold:

Electrolux horizontal vacuum cleaners and Kirby upright vacuum cleaners.

Encyclopedias

Fuller brushes and Better brushes.

What other stuff do you remember that was delivered to your house or
that some pesky door to door salesman tried to sell back then?

Was there a Judy Gardner playing some part.? How old were we then? ?It was when I was staying a lot with my Grandma Smith as she helped me big time to learn all my lines.? What parts did the Stoin twins have?? Anybody remember the name of it?? Who were the teachers that helped with the rehearsals?

Hi Everybody:
?
Linda Fahrney/Freeland here!? I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office."? Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...
?
=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home.? I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny?
======
You all may have had another "Kissing" party at the Meisner home (don't remember where that was), but I went to the party at Connie and Dick Bodager's house and there were gobs of guys and girls there.? (would be interesting if everybody would reveal if they were there or not).? And yes, we played "Post Office" and must have been the first time for that game for me!? Cause I've never forgot it.? That's the memory I have when I drive by Connie's house even today.
I want to confirm Pat's stories about a lot of girls doing and learning to do acrobats in the old school house in the basement girl's bathroom.? I remember doing that too!? I know one time I did a flip with no hands and don't how I did that to this day.? It's a wonder we didn't crack our heads on the cement floor and kill ourselves.? Pat says we used a big rubber cushioned pad.? I don't remember that - but maybe so.? I remember that Karen, Connie, and Nancy W. were the best and were featured later on in some kind of a talent show (or maybe a side act to one of our operettas that we had.
By the way everybody, I got a call about two weeks ago on a Sat. morning and it was Karen Eckard Baer.? We had a good visit on the phone and I told her about all the Yahoo group and how much fun it was.? She said to say "Hi" to everybody.? I asked her if she was not on line and she informed me that she was not a computer person.? I usually see Karen or at least talk to her when I go home as she was my childhood friend (both her and Jeff Eckard) as we just lived across the field from their houses and we did some serious playing as young children.? She is well and has a wonderful family and grandchildren that her and Mike visit often.? She retired a couple of years ago from her beauty salon that she had in her house.
Speaking of operetta's - does anybody remember one we did when we were about 9 or 10 years old?? I don't remember what grade that would have been.? I had a pretty big part in it and I was a "Teakettle."? Gwen, I remember you were in this one and was either a broom or a "Teapot."? I had to sing a song and it started out "A teakettle's life is a merry one (and then I forgot the words) and just sang? La, la, la, la, la, la, the rest of the song!? I know the song of "I'm a Little Teapot- short and stout" was also sang.? Don't remember any of the boy's parts.? Also anybody remember the operetta - "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" with all the rats following.? Let's hear from you if you do and who was in that one?????
More later from me...

Slumber parties where we played spin the bottle at Connie bodagers ............ ....and slumber parties at betty hostettlers ? And we walked to Orrville by the back roads by moonlight to the root beer stand.? I know that more of you girls have slumber party stories so bring them on!???

Ok you guys are killing me.? I'm starting to flow with the memories, now comes the things we used to do that was not exactly good.? I remember on halloween night time when we used to cruise the back country roads looking for corn shocks farmers put up.? We used to practice our tackling by running thru ?fields and knocking them down.? I remember one smart farmer who put stakes in the middle of the shocks, OUCH!?
?
Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business?? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.?
?
How about Lanny Rossiter?? I remember the name.? He dated a girl (?) in school and I remember everyone used to tease her about dating a jailbird because he spent time in jail.? I believe that girl eventually dated Emer (Els) Royer from East Greenville who was my cousin.? He served time in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and liked to hang out with the Dalton school kids.? Any memories of him or her??
?
I remember parties where we used to place our hands over our mouths and noses and blow out emitting no air causing ourselves to pass out.? That is why some of us are now brainless and lucky to be alive.??

Kate Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will always continue.? I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan, Milton Burle, etc.? We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan.? That was then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".?
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour.? My sister Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the Marimba.? She was 18 at the time.? Someone recently found an archive tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a copy.

Re: Ice Skating in Kidron - back in the 50's

Hi Gwen:
?
Linda (Fahrney) Freeland here from Texas.? Thanks for looking into the ice skating pond in Kidron.? I knew Betty G. would know.? I don't know a Bob Romey and that name does not sound familiar, but maybe that's whose pond it was.? All, I know?is I made it out there once or maybe a couple of times and all our Kidron classmates were there and it was a blast!
?
Welcome back from your trip - it sounds fantastic.

Hi everybody,
We are back from our trip to Yellowstone.?? We had a wonderful time; saw lots of wildlife, including a grizzly.??? In addition, we saw 3 black bears (one just inches from our?car),?a coyote?tossing a snake up in the air,?a river otter swimming in the Yellowstone River, and tons of bison.??? We hiked several miles around the park and saw up close and personal the many flowers, mud pots, geysers, etc.?? We even saw a bald eagle on its nest at the top of a tree.??? The park was spectacular!!!!????
?
When I got home, I had 129 e-mail messages, mostly from you all.??? I loved it!!!!??? I contacted Betty Geiser about this ice skating pond.?? She e-mailed me back and said she remembers the pond well.??? She said it is on the Bob Romey property and when it would really get cold, he would build a fire.???
?
I have?my own?Halloween story to tell.??? Glenn and I stole an oil lantern from an Amish school.??? They lit it every night and we got the idea to take it and hang it on the flagpole outside of our high school.??? We did that.??? Several days later, I was riding around with Paul Zuercher, Louella Shane, and a couple more classmates at night (it was still Halloween season) and we drove by that same Amish school.?? Another lit lantern was setting on the steps.??? I talked my fellow classmates into stopping the car, turning off the lights, and we would get the lantern.??? We went sneaking across the field and when one of us picked up the lantern, gunshots went off.??? They were waiting for us......we all raced back to the car and sped off.???? Never in my life had I been so scared!!!!???? I remember Cookie ducking down on the floor in the back seat, fearful for her life!!!!??
?
About Meyers Lake, I remember that I, too, liked that ride that went out over the water.???? The first time I went on the roller coaster, I was scared out of my wits......I thought I was going to fall out.??? I was with Connie Bodager and she had been on it many times and she just took it in stride.??? Me......I was petrified!!!!????? Glenn and I went back to see where Meyers Lake Amusement Park had been last year while we were in Ohio and you are right, John, it is now all condos with just a hint of a lake there (mostly reeds and marshes).???
?
On the 4th of July, we would go to the Douglas Reunion (same as John) at Orr Park.??? My mother and his father were first cousins.??? To this day, that reunion still gets together on July 4th, but not at Orr Park.??? Clarabel Kurzen, Brenda Douglas, Floyd Douglas still attend.??? If I am in Ohio on the 4th, I go to this reunion.??? It has been many years since I have attended.??? Denise (our daughter) and Aaron (our son) have attended this reunion in recent years.?
?
More later.???
Gwen

Chuck:
Hi!? Well, maybe the pond you are talking about is it ???? It had a name.? I'm sure Betty Keiner or Harley Hofstetter would remember what it was called or whose pond it was.
?
Thanks for looking it up!

I remember a skating pond that was out in the country, a little northwest of Kidron.? It was just north of a crossroads that was one or two roads west of the Kidron road.? From what I can see on maps, it was either at what is now Hackett Road and South Kansas Road, or at Hackett Road and South Kohler Road.? I don't remember the name of the property.
?
On Google Satellite, you can see a pond near Hackett Road and South Kohler Road.

Chuck:

I think it's kind of funny that all we remember about the trip to
Pittsburgh is the name of the driver and a song on the radio.

Were we lost in space or what? I guess the Latin purpose of the trip
was secondary to the trip itself.

As far as Spanish is concerned, I remember Spanish as well as I
remember Latin.

Si, Senor.

Que pasa?

Yes, I remember the trip to Pittsburgh. I think you are correct -
that it involved Latin somehow. I think we took a test. It was at
the Buhl Planetarium, and Homer Gerber drove us. My impression of
the city was that it was very black - all of the buildings were black
from the smoke of the steel mills.

It is much different today. The steel mills are gone and the
buildings have been cleaned, as well as new buildings have been
built. My wife, Priscilla, grew up in the area, up the Allegheny in
New Kensington, although it has been years since we have been there.
Her parents moved away in the late '70s, and, except to bury their
ashes after her Mother passes - not imminent, by the way, as she is
in very good health and will turn 90 in September - there is no
reason to go there. None of Priscilla's family is there anymore.
The closest one is her sister who lives a couple hours away in
Indiana, PA.

I run into Latin in choir sometimes, and it may have some relevance
for Spanish. Have you learned Spanish, living in Texas?

Home Delivery

jhdouglas59

Lanny and Judy Royer

How about we get a golf game for the 50th.? Riceland would be fun and an old memory.

As far as I know, Riceland is still there, although it has been twenty or more years since I played there.? I never played there when we were in high school, because I thought then that golf was such a stupid game.? Later, it became an obsession; then I gave it up for ten years.? Now, it has gotten to the point where it is just fun to go out and play a few holes and I don't really care about the score.? We belong to a club where they have a nine-hole course where the tees are different for the back nine, but it is essentially playing the same nine holes all over again;? so, playing only nine holes is best and playing eighteen is too much, unless it is a tournament or something.? I played nine this afternoon and it was fun, the air was great and it was a good 2-mile walk.
