February 5, 1834 As railroads debate the use of steam over horse power, a satiric column appears in the West Chester Village Record urging the use of horse-drawn vehicles on the Columbia Railroad. The piece points out "the use of horses will create jobs for horse-breeders, blacksmiths, farriers, feed-growers, etc." The piece also says, "horses can go up to 12 mph and people should not desire to go faster. Besides only the rich will be able to afford locomotives."

January 29, 1956 Philadelphia trolley routes 26 and 52 were converted to bus operation with new GMC TDH-5106 diesel buses, ending trolley service on busy Chelten Avenue on Germantown. In Center City, Arch Street lost its trolleys when routes 9 and 48 were converted to bus operation with the new GMCs and were combined to form the present 48 bus route. Tracks were abandoned on Fairmount and Wallace from 15th to 23rd, 31st and 32nd from Columbia to York, and 4th and 5th from Snyder to Ritner but only temporally. All plain 8000s at Allegheny Depot were retired to Southern Depot for scrapping, as were remodeled 8000s from route 26. The remodeled 5200s were transferred to Luzerne Depot for route 60, retiring the last 10 5000s and some plain 5200s. January 28, 2014 The Mineral Range Railroad begins. The northern Michigan railroad operates on 12 miles of ex-Lake Superior & Ishpeming trackage along with an additional 1.9 miles of abandoned line that has been put back in service. The new line will serve the newly-built Humbolt Mill.
