DQ10 driver test problem

So I finally got around to working on my dads Dynaco PAT5. ?The left channel was intermittent and when it did play it was very scratchy. ?Just needed a little cleaning. ?So when I was testing everything out the left driver sounded horrible at about 50% power on a Dynaco ST-416. I can run the right channel bass control at 100% without the noise but the left has to be around 50% to stop the clanking. ?I did refoam the drivers. ?Is it something I did during the refoam or could it be a crossover issue? ?I also noticed that the inductors do get quite hot. ?Hot enough to where I can smell the wax on the x-over or around 140°F. ? Here is a video of the issue. Hoping someone can have some insight. ?Thanks everyone!! ?

The Masonite is loose and rattling that’s what’s causing your vibration you might want to try to re-phone with again or send it to simply speakers and let them do it for you it could be fixable and sound great just needs a little bit more a TLC

So you are saying it’s the Masonite where the foam surround is mounted?

Correct. The glue from the metal frame to Masonite is loose.. easy fix

Whenever I open my DQ-10 or DQ-20 for any reason I check all of the screws (large and small) and whatever is attached to something else. At that age, anything can come loose at any time

Maybe pull the woofer out, rotate it upside-down, and put it back in. If it's not perfectly centered, then that can happen. The cone is probably not bottoming out, since it can be pushed in more than that. It's probably rubbing. If it's rubbing because it's not perfectly centered, then reversing the gravity on the coil may be enough to stop that from happening, at least until the surround is broken in. The surround will stretch over time, and the coil should center up when that happens.

Yep reglue the masonite. In your case the over heating of the large resistors is considered normal when driven hard full range. Should you progress to bi-amping with separate subs that will vanish. I used to keep damp washcloths over mine and they would steam out requiring replacement within a few hours. You could try gluing large heat sinks on the resistors with heat conductive glue. But they really go nuts expressing heat. The coils should not be doing so. I also have a 416 and they are good amps but getting long in the teeth. Perhaps you should check it out for offset, parasitics, etc.

Best wishes,
DD

It’s not heartbreaking… a failed open heart surgery is heart breaking!!!
I believe I have 3-5 woofers in storage as when I got into dq10’s I feared blowing them up. Fortunately I’ve yet to fry one…

Definitely fix the glue on the massonite, I forgot to mention that, and that could be part of the reason for the rubbing if that's what that sound is. That sound cool be the ring itself rattling, but possibly the coil. I've heard that sound before a few times, and it can be similar for different reasons, but if it is the coil, that could also cause the resistors to get hot as well. Those resistors can get hot even when everything is working fine. They say fifteen watts, but I've had some get warm when listening to only a few watts. Hopefully the cone/ring issue can be solved with some glue or a rotation of the driver.

Mine was rattling- it was the metal cage up top.

Hi Darin
?
I would first check the?speaker using the other channel just to make sure it is not something up stream before the speaker...
?
Then If it still giving the same performance...
?
I think the voice coil is not centered and is rubbing. it would have to be refomed..? I agree with Ricahrd , to send it off .. I personally would use Bill at Millersound..
?

I second Bill Legall at Miller Sound.? Did my DQ-20i woofers several months ago.

Thanks for all of the input. ?When I pulled the drivers to refoam them the Masonite looked solid but I will check that again. ?It sounds like the cone could be rubbing on the inside. ?Almost like when you push the cone down and it’s not perfectly centered and you get that rubbing noise. ?I actually haven’t checked the temp on the inductors on that speaker. ?It’s the other one that plays fine is where I am getting the heat from. It got up to 190° F last night when I was jamming out with the kids ?. ?The same speaker with the driver issue only plays out of the driver and mid bass. ? So I’m sure the crossover needs a rebuild. ?

Actually. ?I did install it upside down so that both drivers in both speakers were the same. ?I did notice that one was upside down when I pulled it. ?Going to try that now. ??

I believe so. They are serial numbers 1142 and 1143

You can buy redone ones for 100$ at simply speakers if you can’t get it right..

I’m going to try to rotate the driver or worse comes to worse refoam it. ?I’ll keep everyone posted. I’ll get to it hopefully by the end of the week. ?

If you recently refoamed it yourself ( I think you did), you should be able to heat the outer edge with a hairdryer and use a putty knife to loosen the new foar from the frame,? The try to re-seat it.? ?
