Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Thanks for this information. My first exposure to the 10's was in high school and I saved every nickel to buy a pair. Many years pass....but when I heard about the back story of Jon it stuck with me. Such an interesting "character" and pioneer in audio, struck down so dramatically (at arguably what might have been his career his peak). And then decades of silence as to his situation, state of function and whereabouts. It all just added to the fascination and desire for answers. I had always hoped he'd re-emerge, limited by whatever physical capabilities of course, to acknowledge those who love his designs and want the story behind them.? To be gifted his personal pair of 10"s - absolutely amazing!!! I don't suppose you got a photo of the two of you? Did you find him to be "eccentric" or just a cranky old man? The fact he "lit up" when you mentioned his speakers suggests to me he was still very much oriented and ready to chat, but I could be wrong.
?
Curious - who is "One56Way" and their connection to Jon?
?
I guess this matter is closed since he's in assisted living. Sad to ponder. Almost has a James Dean/Steve Jobs aspect to it.
?
Sending same response to Charlie since he has background on this too. |

开云体育Here’s the eBay messages from April: A quick story I love to tell... When I purchased my dental practice in 1998, one day Jon was in the schedule for a cleaning. The staff pulled me aside and warned me that Mr. Dahlquist was very eccentric and i wasn't to engage him in heavy conversation. I went in, introduced myself, and my first question was "Did you have anything to do with the Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers?" Needless to say, he lit up. We engaged in heavy conversation for the next 20 minutes. He was very impressed that I received my DMD from Tufts Dental School in Boston. We fell in love!!! We've had a great relationship ever since and I was blessed when he offered ME his personal pair of DQ-10's. I definitely impressed my staff that day as well. Memories, Very fond ones! ?I'd appreciate your help. Hi godd186, My office mgr tells me Jon moved into assisted living a few months ago, and did sell his house. 开云体育The listing was on EBay. I did not bid on it. I don’t know if it’s in messages. I have the Grado engineers number saved from ten years ago. I’ll check my messages. They were maybe 450 dollars or so. But I found him by (The engineer by accident) No one could find him. It was purely by happenstance. But I absolutely did talk to the dentist. Pete, I have communicated with the Woman called ?One56way in the above mentioned thread. She confirmed that Jon was still alive. This was some time ago- Sept 2022. She said :
?
Message:”Sorry I just read your email. As far as I know Jon is still alive. I have not seen him in quite sometime and I believe he has a caretaker. If you would like send me an email rori at billydeans dot com and a detailed note, I will leave it in his door. I believe you sent me an email as I recall and I know I brought it to him personally. I went through the extent of explaining why you were trying to reach him. My guess is he never responded. That was the last time I saw him. I can only say he is a very nice man however has always been a bit eccentric. That was a few years ago and his health was not great at the time. I can't believe you found me here of all places, I rarely look at the emails on Etsy. If you googled me you would have found me at either my business or Facebook. I understand the passion of wanting to connect with your guru as I too have tracked down people for different reasons. I will try again if you like, send me a note and include your phone number. Who knows maybe he is not a computer person?
After discussing the potential for contact with member(s) of this ground it was decide it best to leave him alone.
However since then his house has been sold and he was moved to a facility for better care. So the contact has sadly been lost.? |
Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Jon has been discussed on Audio Karma in the last 5 years or so, IIRC he was living on LI at that time. See post #5 and on: Pete Basel On Wed, Feb 5, 2025 at 8:39?AM SpongeSound via <wm.edmiston=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Well I ended getting the Alon IV.? Arranging shipment.? Now I have to see if I'm going to use the old mc2500 to run them or look for a different amp.? I'll listen to them with what I have now which is a pioneer c90 and either two McIntosh 2100 or a single 2500.
?
Thanks for ur guys help.

Hopefully I can still remain in this group for help even though I don't have a Dahlquist? |
Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Hi, ?I have owned 10's, 20's and now have the Alon IV Mark 2's. They are fantastic speakers with no need for a subwoofer in my application. Carl was in on the design of the Dahlquists, and the Alons have pretty much the same sound. I also have them tri-wired as he recommends. Fortunately, these are my endgame speakers, as his Nola's are pricey (to me). If you like the Dahlquist sound, you would probably love these.? |
Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
OK, now I'm really interested. Not in the speakers but the Jon update. I spent many hours trying to track him down years ago with no luck. Pretty certain I found his sister and sent an old-fashioned letter with my contact info and some non-intrusive questions. No response (but also the letter was never returned undeliverable so I can only assume it was correct). Not to challenge your dentist but there have been many unsubstantiated "Jon sightings" similar to the Loch Ness monster. No proof ever offered. Can you provide more? |

I owned a pair of DQ20’s and from what I gathered?talking with other DQ20 owners, the midrange driver ?was originally made by the?German speaker company?Magnat. The DQ20i was?changed to?a less expensive mid driver to keep costs down, making the speaker more competitive. The Alon Model II is a great?successor to the ‘20 series, created by the same designer. Also,?I may have a pair of Alon II’s available if anyone is interested. On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, 10:10 AM, plague via groups.io <haigmarino@...> wrote:

Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Hi, I have a pair of Alon II’s which are fantastic neutral sounding speaker with great bass. The reviews online are generally spot on. I can’t speak of them relative to DQ 20’s but I’d imagine they are similar. I have rebuilt DQ-10’s which are a bit better from the bass up, although I haven’t listened to them in a while. If the price is right don’t hesitate with the Alons.? -Haig (long time lurker) |
Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
开云体育I think I read that the Nola founder used a different and possibly inferior mid in the 20i, maybe one became unavailable or something along those lines or to accommodate the bi amp capability. I haven’t had my 10’s in 45 years but just read a lot but they are distinctly different. ?I had a chance to buy Jon’s 10’s from his dentist in Hauppage three months ago but Cincinnati to Long Island was too far. The dentist said he liked them and Jon just gifted them to him. Even though I will likely never own a pair I do love the history etc. as I said in an earlier post I talked to a Grado guy who spoke to Jon regularly. But that’s been ten years. The dentist said Jon was still around but someone said his home just sold. So he did live independently for decades. Assisted living perhaps now?On Feb 4, 2025, at 10:04?AM, Jeff Katz via groups.io <qstieee@...> wrote:

Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Maybe because of a change in crossover due to the bi-amping capability in the 20i ? Same here. Had two sets of the 10, a 20, and a 20i Still have one set of the 10 and the 20. Interesting other comment about ALON/NOLA, because original Dahlquist factory was also on Long Island (Hauppauge) On Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 02:35:34 AM EST, brrywill via groups.io <brrywill@...> wrote: I can't speak for the Alon's, although I understand they are very good.
