Finn the police
dog was treated as a hero after saving his handler's
life
A recent??suggests dogs
can cry tears of joy when their owners come home after
a day at work. The tears are thought to deepen the
bond between dogs and their owners. But how deep can
that bond become?
PC Dave Wardell has
an unbreakable bond with ex-police dog Finn, a German
shepherd.
In 2016, at the age
of seven, Finn was??while protecting PC Wardell,
his handler, from an armed suspect in Stevenage,

Finn had been
trained by, and lived with the officer since he was a
puppy.
PC Wardell is in no
doubt that Finn saved his life on that fateful night
almost six years ago, and frequently refers to the dog
as a "hero".
The pair have been
together "almost 24 hours a day - so the bond is very
strong," he says.
PC Wardell saw Finn
through his emergency surgery on the night of the
attack, and slept next to the dog as he recovered at the
family home.
A teenager was??for the attack.
The assault on the
dog was dealt with by the law as "criminal damage",

Finn retired from
duty at the age of eight in April 2017, having recovered
from his near fatal injuries.
Since then he has
continued to live as part of the policeman's family.
PC Wardell, who is
still serving, is in no doubt about the strength of the
bond between an owner and dog and was not surprised to
see the findings of?.
However, he said:
"I'm not sure I've ever seen Finn cry - but he's very
squeaky and very happy to see his 'dad'.
"We're so bonded we
both get very excited, and you can tell by his whole
body that he is so happy.
"If Finn can't come
on holiday with us, I don't go - and my family have come
to understand that."

The bond between a
retired police dog and his owner is so strong, he
believes the animal has other powers.
"He blows the family
away - if you believe in a sixth sense, then he has it,"
says PC Wardell.
"I work different
hours and different shifts all the time, but Finn knows
when I'm on my way home.
"My wife and the
children have messaged to ask if I'm on my way because
Finn is getting excited.
"I can be up to 40
miles away, but can say 'yes, I'm just getting in the
car, now'.
"We're still best
buddies," he says. "He knows what I'm thinking and
there's no-one I'd rather spend time with.
"You can't ever
break that bond."

Huron whose location had "remained a mystery for over
120 years."?
The 191-foot cargo vessel Ironton -- which
sank following a collision in 1894 in an area called
"Shipwreck Alley" – has been located within the Thunder
Bay National Marine Sanctuary, according to the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.?
Only
two members?of the ship’s seven-man crew survived the
disaster by clinging onto floating wreckage in??The other five
sailors, including Ironton’s captain, died after getting
into the vessel’s lifeboat, which the crew was unable to
detach from the ship during the chaos.?

the lake more than a century later.?

"The
discovery illustrates how we can use the past to create
a better future,"?Jeff Gray, Thunder Bay National Marine
Sanctuary superintendent, said in a statement. "Using
this cutting-edge technology, we have not only located a
pristine shipwreck lost for over a century, we are also
learning more about one of our nation's most important
natural resources -- the Great Lakes. This research will
help protect Lake Huron and its rich history."?
Researchers
from the NOAA, the state of Michigan and the Ocean
Exploration Trust nonprofit teamed up to discover the
Ironton’s wreckage.?
"Magnificently
preserved by the cold freshwater of the Great Lakes for
over a century, the 191-foot Ironton rests upright with
its three masts still standing," the NOAA said Wednesday
in its announcement of the find.?
Shortly
after midnight on Sept. 26, 1894, the Ironton – a
schooner barge that was being pulled by the Charles J.
Kershaw?steamer – had its tow line cut to avoid a
potential collision after the leading ship’s engine
failed.?
"Ironton's
crew found themselves suddenly adrift in the dark and at
the mercy of Lake Huron's wind-blown seas," the NOAA
said. "Under the direction of Captain Peter Girard, they
fought to regain control of the ship, firing up the
vessel's auxiliary steam engine to help set the
struggling ship's sails."?
But
despite that effort, the Ironton came into the path of
the Ohio, a steamer carrying 1,000 tons of grain.?

NOAA says it "intends to deploy a deep-water
mooring buoy at the site of Ironton to mark the

"The
two vessels separated after the impact, both fatally
damaged. Ironton's bow tore a 12-foot diameter hole into
Ohio's wooden hull," the NOAA said. "Heavily laden with
cargo, Ohio sank quickly, with all 16 crew escaping on
lifeboats. Nearby ships rescued the sailors."?
The
Ironton, meanwhile, drifted out of sight of the
responding ships until it succumbed to its fate.?
The
NOAA says the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and
partners first found the Ohio in Lake Huron in 2017. ?
Two
years later, its researchers went on a mapping
expedition with the Ocean Exploration Trust – an
organization founded by deep-sea explorer Robert
Ballard, who discovered the wreck of the Titanic in 1985
-- and discovered the Ironton.?
"As the
project came to its final days, the team had
successfully mapped a large section of the search area,
but Ironton remained undiscovered," the NOAA said. "The
researchers expanded the search area. Persistence and
determination were rewarded when the sonar returned an
image from the lakebed of an unmistakable shipwreck --
and one that matched the description of Ironton."?
In
2021, the team returned to the site on a??"to collect
high-resolution video and further document the wreck."?

Now the
NOAA says it "intends to deploy a deep-water mooring
buoy at the site of Ironton to mark the shipwreck's
location and help divers visit the wreck site safely."?
"The
discovery of Ironton inspires us to keep exploring,"
Gray said. "We will continue to map Thunder Bay National
Marine Sanctuary, and this research will ultimately lead
to even more discoveries about the Great Lakes and the
unique collection of shipwrecks that rest on the
lakebed."?

Budweiser Clydesdales OK Following Scary Hitch Accident
Budweiser Clydesdales OK Following Scary
Hitch Accident
At the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene, Texas last
weekend, an eight-horse team of Budweiser Clydesdales was
performing their iconic hitch maneuvering when an accident
occurred.
It appears from the footage taken from the grandstands
that at around the?4-minute mark, one
of the horses simply tripped, which caused a disastrous and very
frightening-looking pileup of several of the 2,000-pound animals.
(Warning, the fall is a bit alarming and hard to watch.)
To the credit of the handlers, trainers, and hitch team
that make these horses what they are, and to the credit of the
horses themselves, not one of the team panicked, thrashed, or
bolted throughout the unhitching and detangling process. Instead,
the geldings calmly waited as the wagon team freed each horse one
at a time from their 130-pound harnesses.
The announcer kept the audience calm, and salvaged the
exhibition’s conclusion by telling the crowd, “You have just
witnessed a miracle.” It is incredible and fortunate that every
horse walked out on his own four feet, though horsemen may be more
inclined to chalk it up to years of high safety standards, superb
training, and countless hours of preparation for just such a
calamity by the Budweiser Clydesdale Team.
A public relations representative for Budweiser provided
an update that none of the horses was seriously injured, and all
are expected to return to the hitch.

Following
the debacle, animals welfare organizations criticized
the beer company for using tight-fitting harnesses
during horse shows and removing the horse's tailbone.

As the

suspenseful action to the audience, noting that in?, "when you’re working with animals,
you never know what can happen."
The
video shows the workers proficiently untangling the
horses and removing them from the arena.?
The
horse that fell was immediately checked for injuries
with the announcers assuring audience members that they
have, "an animal care unit, and if we need to transport
any livestock, even a 2,000 pound bull. We're able to do
it."
After a
few minutes, the two lead horses and a third horse were
freed from the pack to create space around?. When the animal finally tries to
rise to its feet, the crowd roars their encouragement,
but it did not quite make it.

During
a second attempt, the massive horse managed to regain
its footing after the handler removed the heavy harness
from the horse. Once the horse rose up, the animal
received a thunderous applause from the audience.?
"He is
going to totally examine that animal," the announcer
shared. "They will look over the rest of them that were
in that hitch as well. They are beautiful."?
Following
the debacle, animals welfare organizations criticized
the beer company for using tight-fitting harnesses
during horse shows and removing the horse's tailbone.
According
to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA),
investigators went to the official breeding facility for
the Budweiser Clydesdales.?
"We
uncovered that Anheuser-Busch Companies LLC, which
produces Budweiser beer, amputates the tailbones of the
famed Clydesdales—primarily so they’ll look a certain
way as they pull the wagon." PETA shared on its website.
Clydesdales
use their tails for balance, mobility, and
communication, PETA shared. The removal of the tailbone
is prohibited in 10 U.S. states, unless medically
necessary, and in several countries.?
?Stock Show & Rodeo
kicked off on Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 26. The
iconic Clydesdales have become synonymous with the
Budweiser brand, including their annual Super Bowl
commercials.?

started his life as a 'pound puppy' before being recruited
as a police K9

The new season 5
episode highlights how Joker, a loyal K9 to the
Bradley County Police Department, overcame a
life-threatening situation and turned the
harrowing event into one that re-wrote safety
for K9s in the line of duty.
A former "pound puppy" who gained national
attention for his work at a??for sniffing out
electronic devices that often contained child
pornography and other illegal materials has died at the
age of 7.?
"URL was not bred to be a police dog, and
instead had a very rough start as a ‘pound puppy,’ and
bounced through two different animal shelters and one
foster home within the first few months of his life,"
the Weber County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook
announcing URL’s death.?
The
black lab retired from the force in January last year
and had been living with his handler. He died on Dec.
30, just shy of his 8th birthday, according to the
sheriff’s office.
Despite
URL initially being deemed "untrainable," a rescue
center in Indiana recognized the pup’s "unique talents,"
which launched him into police training and ultimately
into the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.

"URL
was trained in the infancy of a nationwide program
intended to include Electronic Storage Detection in
police services. URL was only the fourth dog to be
certified as such in the United States," the??stated.
URL and
his handler, Det. Cameron Hartman, were able to execute
more than 2,000 arrest warrants together, with the K9
often sniffing out electronic devices involving child
pornography and other sex abuse cases. He soon gained
the moniker of "porn-sniffing dog."

In one
of URL’s more "remarkable" cases, according to the
sheriff’s office, he was able to sniff out a USB drive
disguised as a key on a keyring full of keys. In other
cases, URL found an SD card that was hidden on a high
shelf in a Utah residence and a cellphone hidden in a
book. He even managed to find a micro-SD card that was
hidden in a baby jar stored inside a pencil case and
hidden in a cedar chest ?with other items.?
His
work launched him into the national spotlight. The pooch
was flown with his handler to Los Angeles in 2017 for an
interview with actor Terry Crews and was featured on the
show "Cops."?
"So
many incredible experiences and opportunities that you
brought me as I was just the guy at the boring end of
the leash holding on for dear life.?Thank you, ‘URL,’
for trusting me, for working so hard, for loving me
unconditionally, and for being?" his handler wrote in a message
included in the sheriff office’s announcement.

"What a

is broken and still filled with so many memories and
emotions.? I am so lucky to have been able to get to
know you and serve the citizens of Utah and its
surrounding states with you," Hartman added in his
statement on URL’s passing.
