Pin Removal WAS Re: [DRAKE-RADIO] AC-4 Cinch Jones Drive Pin Removal

You cannot remove pins from a Cinch Jones connector, unless you destroy the plug. What he really meant to say, is how do you remove the retaining pin that holds the hood onto the
back of the connector.

There.. I fixed it.

Not cheap but they won't break. A local handed be two different flavors of these one day without comment. I looked at them for a moment and the light bulb went on. "I know what these are!" I thanked him profusely. Subsequent internet searches revealed the source (and value).

I use an awl: tap the straight end with a small hammer in a vise so that the pinhead just comes up from the surface. ?Then use flush diagonal cutters under the pinhead and rotate the pin out. ?The diagonal cutters under the head provide ample leverage.? Once the pin is out, the hood can be removed.

?

It’s a complete misuse of tools but it’s worked for me since first trying it back in the 1970s.?

Hi Paul,
that’s exactly the way I have removed the hood pin over the years. ?Tools already on hand.

I've used the same method often enough. Like so many other tech tricks that we think we are so clever for thinking up only to find out later that great minds think alike.

P.S.

?

I should have mentioned that there’s little pressure from the cutter against the pin to ruin the cutters. ?The cutters are used to lift, not cut.? The only pressure applied to the side of the pin is for rotation. ?When possible, I use an older pair of cutters that are near the end of life.

Yeah, it took me a few cycles to figure that out.

Those of us with manufacturing or field tech backgrounds were probably scratching our heads.??

It's all good.? We all come from different origins.

I have always just inserted a piece of buss wire if the hood wasn't secured.

If for?some?reason I cannot return the pin holding the cap onto a Jones connector, I just push some hook up wire through the cap and the connector hole and then bend over the outside edges.? Looks a little funny, but it holds just fine.

You usually need to use slip joint pliers to put the pin back.? You needed a fair bit of pull to get it out and you need a fair bit of push to put it back.

I never drive the head of the pin flush with the hood. A slight space is left to make it easier to extract the pin with pliers or? diagonal cutters used as a pry bar. I don't always have the proper size punch at hand but pliers and diag cutters are always within reach.?

Dont just pull that pin you should twist it as well, anti clockwise to remove

The pin has a coarse thread on it

If you don't grip the shaft with the edges of the side cutter the pin should self-twist as it comes out.

Rather than a "thread", I would describe it as a spiral rib...

You should turn it as you're removing or installing it, but the "twist" is no where near what even a course thread is on a machine screw.
