I think SBE used similar on their amp. I'd expect it to struggle on 10M because of the interelectrode capacitances. I once built a linear with 4 6LQ6 tubes. 10M was not attainable, and the loading coil for 15M was like a half a turn. I have a Swan linear of similar vintage & design. It also has 6 sweep tubes. I got it for a song at the flea market, sans tubes. I have replacement tubes, but a different type, and they take a different socket. Amazon yielded up matching ceramic sockets. My GUESS would be, that this is an interesting home brew fabrication, but who knows??
There were a lot of CB amps built with 2/4/6 sweep tubes.? These days, it would cost a fair amount just for 6x 6JB6's :-) John

This is definitely a well-executed homebrew that someone made to match his station, though the front panel may be the only thing that had to be modified. ?I say this having seen examples of “Drake” station monitor scopes that were obviously repainted Heathkit scopes.

The somewhat haphazard lettering on the front panel does suggest homebrew. That looks to be a about a 300 Watt amp. Maybe 400-ish PEP if you push the tubes to the ragged edge and add forced air cooling. It hardly seems worth the effort. :) Fixed loading via the trimmers behind the tubes so you would need to run it into a matched load. Using CB Radio physics it's probably a kilowatt but it would eat tubes and splatter pretty wide.... 73 -Jim NU0C On Wed, 17 Apr 2024 16:39:53 +0000 "Dick via groups.io" <w1ksz@...> wrote: Looking at the picture magnified, it does look HB, although a well done HB.

They had a lifetime warranty on tubes. I carefully put the receipt in an envelope, and taped it to the bottom of the linear. That amp was built into an ARC-5 transmitter cabinet. When I first powered it up without a fan, it burst into flames. I had wound the plate choke on a pyrex test tube, and wrapped it with (flammable) masking tape. I installed a 110V muffin fan on top of it, and thenceforth it ran cool as a cucumber. But it sounded like an idling jet plane :). Back then, we boasted about the DC input to our transmitters. Rex:
My take on the LA-4 was that it was a Line Amp as well, given that the LA-7 was a REAL item - I have one.? It was a Line Amp for the RR-3 and R-4245 which were made for the Marine Reserve market.
The earlier marine reserve radios...the RR-1 and RR-2, both based on the SPR-4, show in some ads an optional Line Amp option that was available, though I do not see any ads that show a model number.? Makes sense that it would have been an LA-4.? If someone has an ad or manual that shows it, please let us know.? I have yet to check my RR-1 manual and will do so.
I do have an RR-1 receiver that is loaded up with a line amp system, though it consists of a couple of large PC boards, quite unlike the LA-7, which I also have as a stand alone board....yet to be installed.? The LA-7 was offered as an option for the RR-3 and R-4245.
Also...I'd like to see that "LA-4" amp if someone could send me the link.? My search of the auction sites has proved fruitless.? I have?run into this problem before with E-Bay?USA.....somehow, certain things are blocked, yet I have no search filters on.? Puzzling!

Front panel is definitely NOT made by the same mysterious person who supplied the "Drake" HO-10 Monitorscope front panels!

Interesting - 6 sweep tubes.? You'd need to gin up a power supply for it;? I'd guess 800V at a half amp or so + filaments.? The connector looks a little oddball; like an octal plug, only 11 pins.? I think SBE used similar on their amp.
? ?I'd expect it to struggle on 10M because of the interelectrode capacitances.? I once built a linear with 4 6LQ6 tubes.? 10M was not attainable, and the loading coil for 15M was like a half a turn.
? ?I have a Swan linear of similar vintage & design.? It also has 6 sweep tubes.? I got it for a song at the flea market, sans tubes.? I have replacement tubes, but a different type, and they take a different socket.? Amazon yielded up matching ceramic sockets.? That's in the forever queue of future projects.
? ?Back in the day, sweep tubes were cheap because they were made in the millions for TV sets.? That is no longer the case.

Jerry:
Aha!? As I suspected....thanks Jerry.? I have an RR-2 product sheet here too but no mention of the LA-4.? That price list sheet is new to me - will print that one for my files.
Now...if we could just get a pic of the LA-4.....I'd love to know what is actually?in my one RR-1 with the "line amp on steroids"!? It's definitely worth more than $20, even in 1970's money.
73...tnx again...

PETER – See attached the following: ? - Commercial Maritime Price List dated July 15, 1975.? The LA-4 Audio Line Amplifier is Model 1228 and priced at $20.00.
- RR-2 Product Data Sheet dated April 1975.? On Page 3, a Line Amplifier is listed as an Accessory and mentioned in Audio Output specifications associated with providing 600 Ohm line audio.
? Jerry, N4JL ? ? Rex: My take on the LA-4 was that it was a Line Amp as well, given that the LA-7 was a REAL item - I have one.? Puzzling! ? in the 3 years that I worked at Drakes I never heard of a Drake LA-4 and never heard anyone there talk about a LA-4. ? This is definitely a well-executed homebrew that someone made to match his station, though the front panel may be the only thing that had to be modified.? Interesting effort, though. ? Jerry, N4JL ? ? My GUESS would be, that this is an interesting home brew fabrication, but who knows?? There were a lot of CB amps built with 2/4/6 sweep tubes.?
