Re: Drake L7 grid/voltage meter

If anyone is interested, "ice blue" LEDs are now available that are a good match for the correct Drake aqua blue gels. I recently used one in my TR5 to replace a #53 lamp. LEDs surround the top bayonet like a turret and in the TR5 it results in even lighting across the meter scale.

I could try that I suppose. I have some cool whites somewhere. This one is pretty bad. Attached pic is with warm whites behind. Before anyone says anything, the meter is off-scale left due to a static charge. After I let it dissipate the meter works fine.

Re: Latest problem with RV-75

No, L211 and L212 would not do that. They are parallel resonant circuits to peak the third harmonic of the crystal. They will not change the frequency.

Apparently you are missing the 10 Hz steps. From the manual, the 8-bit D-A converter handles the two least significant bits of the BCD frequency data bits. That would be the 10 Hz steps. "The 8-bit converter can generate 100 different voltages corresponding to 00 thru [sic] 99 BCD". This voltage is applied to the varactor CR216 in the VCXO circuit. After all the multiplying, mixing, and prescaling this becomes the 10 Hz steps in the output. Adjustments of R227 and R228 are critical for this.

Check the DC voltage on pin 8 of P202. It should move in steps as you slowly tune from xxxx.0 to xxxx.1, then go back to where it started. It looks like it should step between 0 and +9V. If you see steps as you tune slowly through 100 Hz the problem is in the VCXO crystal circuit. If you don't see it moving check pin 1 of P106 on the digital board for the same voltage (note that the pins are numbered backwards on the schematic from the pins of P202). If you are not seeing the stepping there that indicates a problem in the 8-bit D-A. It's a pretty simple circuit but it's easier to post a pic than to list all the parts. It's a bunch of logic buffers feeding into a cleverly crafted voltage divider network. I would think that the failure of any one chip would not render it completely useless so I suspect your problem lies elsewhere.

Note that this whole thing is unexplored territory for me. I believe the above is a correct analysis but I could be wrong. :)

Now to set down with the schematic and see where I went wrong with the tuning so that the 100hz digit increments correctly. I use my RV-7 and it increments properly with it, so the TR7 is working as it should. I suspect that one of the signal voltage adjustments is wrong or on the edge. It will work out and I enjoy a good challenge.? RV-75 looks good and it is right on freq with WWV and some of the nets I get on.? I still suspect L211 and L212 is the problem although the signal is right at spec.? Thanks everyone for the hints and assistance.

L7 filament choke connections

Since today is apparently fun with L7 pictures day, I thought I would post this. L7 owners, you may want to check your filament choke connections occasionally. These are images from the amp with the multicolored meters.

Also documented by Ham Repair guy on the internet.

Re: R4B AVC issue

Richard,

What is it about those HP meters that have them listed on eBay for 3x more than what you can get a nice HP 8640B sig gen for?

Also, what is the input impedance of a good VTVM? I have tried using my HP 3479A multimeter, but even though it has a 10M input impedance it loads down many/most of the high impedance tube circuits that I have tried using it on.

Re: Drake L7 grid/voltage meter

Mark,
If you don't get any responses, I think that I still have a copy of the program that was on the software CD that came with the ARRL Handbook years ago. It allows you to print a new scale for any meter by simply entering in the basics parameters. The?program no longer comes with the ARRL handbooks. It was developed for?Win7, so I don't know if it will work on later Windows systems. Let me know if you are interested.

Mark:

I have to wonder what causes SOME L-7 meters to discolor this way?? Back in the early 90's, after getting my 1st L-7, I found a bunch of spare parts for sale which included a brand new pair of meters for the L-7.? They were nice and white at that time.? They arrived wrapped in paper towels, inside a box, and were stored by me inside another cardboard box...in other words, there was no way any sunlight could get in there and do that.? Years later, I pulled them out to see what was in the box and discovered the scales had yellowed....not quite as badly as yours...but maybe 60-70% of that?? ?I sold off one of the L-7's years ago and it's been through two owners since, both of whom I still keep in touch with and both L-7's do not exhibit any?yellowing?of the scales!

I wasn't too worried about it as the?meters were meant to be spare parts for the day I lose a meter in the L-7....which, fortunately, has yet to happen.? I can always use the scales in a defunct meter should that catastrophe occur...hopefully unlikely, now that the one L-7 I have has the protective diode mod now.

I made my own scales for my SR-2000 power supply, as they were yellowed badly, but the plastic meter housings were also yellowed.? No amount of Novus polish would completely remove the yellowing of the plastic, though it did help a lot.? I found two "same style" meters on Ebay for under $20 and made my own scales using the free "METER" program.? They were much simpler scales than the L-7 multimeter though.? Scales were printed with a laser printer on heavy 80 weight paper and spray glued to the originals.? They look really good.

Another option might be to see if RadioDaze could make new scales for you.? They are VERY good with graphic reproductions.? I have no idea what the initial setup charge would be but might be worth an inquiry.

Drake L4B Amp For Sale

I have a very nice Drake L4B HF amplifier I would like to offer for sale. The amp is in very good condition. The amp has been upgraded with the Harbach ES4L4B Soft-Start/Soft -Key /Bias Module start boards. The amp power supply has been rebuilt with Harbach PM-400 Replacement Power Supply Module rebuild kit. The?amp will put out around 750 watts on CW and 1200 watts on SSB. I am selling because the amp is excess to my needs. It comes with a manual and a custom soft cover. I am asking $1300 OBO. Local pickup preferred I would prefer not to ship the amp and power supply and would help with delivery within 75 miles of zip code 18202. However any shipping and packing insurance will be at the purchaser¡¯s expense. The tubes and chimneys are very fragile and must be shipped separately. Please let me know if you have any questions. The amp and power supply are Sold as is with no warrantee.?

Re: L7 value

Hey guys, didn't buy the L7, but came home with a Alpha 87A. Was a great price and I could not pass it up.?

So I am going to sell my L4b. If anyone is looking for one it's been recapped with Harbach boards, and the soft start board as well. Looking for $1200 not to crazy about shipping it, but I will be at Dayton or of course could meet someone up to 60 miles from Grand Rapids, Michigan.?

Re: Latest problem with RV-75

Edited

Just finished the full alignment.? All frequencies and voltages look great. The only problem is that when tuning, I cannot get the 100hz digit on the TR7 to increment and then it will advance by 1khz.? Annoying at least but the 10x probe proved to be the main culprit.? Now to set down with the schematic and see where I went wrong with the tuning so that the 100hz digit increments correctly. I use my RV-7 and it increments properly with it, so the TR7 is working as it should. I suspect that one of the signal voltage adjustments is wrong or on the edge. It will work out and I enjoy a good challenge.? RV-75 looks good and it is right on freq with WWV and some of the nets I get on.? I still suspect L211 and L212 is the problem although the signal is right at spec.? Thanks everyone for the hints and assistance.

Re: R4B AVC issue

I don't follow Mr. Carlson. It sounds like his super-probe is nothing more than a signal tracer. Signal tracers were common service instruments for years. An AC detector on a small audio amplifier with built in speaker. You can trace a signal around in a set with one of these. Usually also arranged to trace audio without a diode detector. Next best to a scope.
The 410B is a great meter, I like them better than the 410C. Be careful to read the warning at the front of the handbook, the ground in not isolated and you can zap yourself.
BTW, the General Radio 1800A VTVM has a similar problem with the case being hot in some connections.

Now that I have finished the R-4C that was giving me such grief, I'm looking to getting my $5 ME-26 D/U working properly.? This is a VTVM that is the military version of the HP 410B, with an RF probe that can be accurate to 800 MHz.

I have been promising myself that I would look into creating one
of those "Mr. Carlson Super Probes". "Mr. Carlson's Lab" is on
YouTube and he created an AC probe that can sniff out problems
like internally arcing components. The probe is similar in concept
to the old signal tracers but it is much more sensitive. I believe
he has two versions: one with through-hole and the other using
SMT. He demonstrated the probe on an old receiver that was showing
"crackling" noises. and was able to find the bad cap within a few
minutes.

Anyway, I scored another victory today: I figured out how to add a

S9+40 meter mark, first time I noticed I just though "ohh meter

gain and guess what?
No "sticky" meter when RF gain is fully cranked up quickly.

I noticed twice when "cold" starting the rig, and coinciding
"crackling" sound when the meter "jumped", not sure what the
right term is in English / U.S.A'ish but same sound a hot 6146B
tube can produce just not so pronounced.

It may not be related, just noticed it.. So.. status quo, really
eager to get that 12be6 swapped, but the mail man is apparently
on vacation in Hawaii current time.
