Re: Stupid eBay Pricing

I have not looked at the listing detail but one or two seem just to list something to show off.? Example is a rebuilding in progress of a Johnson Viking ll transmitter for around $ 1000.

Re: TR4cw/rit production numbers question

Today I use cheap gaming headsets (around $18 with microphone too).
They have a volume control in-line, just turn it down a little and the hum from old radios just
disappears.

Thanks for the TRC-4Cw-RIT info.? Looks like you also have a super nice Hallicrafters ¡°Twins.¡±?

?

I just acquired a Cyclone III with HA-20 remote VFO.? It came in excellent shape but had more hum than I like when using Telex headphones of the type commonly used with COMM receivers in the 1960s.

?

In addition to a filter cap upgrade, I ended up adding a 40 uF/450VDC cap right onto the screen grid pin of the Cyclone¡¯s 6AQ5 audio output tube.? Starting at the main filter cap, as the cap was moved closer to the screen grid on the B+ line, hum gradually diminished.? Any tiny amount of ripple on the screen gets amplified along with the desired signal. That alone nearly eliminated all trace of hum. That trick can likely be applied to some Drake gear.

Paul,

We are close in serial number. My TR-4Cw-RIT is 45336. It came to me pristine but not working. Eventually I found a broken filament line wire in the harness that had several tubes not illuminated at all and some extra bright. As you would expect, the open line fouled up the planned series and parallel arrangement with the filament voltage to all the tubes. Likely the radio was pristine because it was never used.?

I was lucky in that after correction it worked fine and has yet to need any tubes replaced. In the case here, the radio is quite stable, and it performs well in that respect in comparison to my Drake R-4C and T-4XC. I never use these radios without at least a 30-minute warm-up. The radio must have worked at the factory - because it has never needed alignment.

My serial number is beyond the list on WB4HFN's website. While I did get the original manual with the radio, I did not get the build ticket showing the date. My estimate is around March of 1978.

I believe the S/Ns of the 4-Line started with the R-4/T-4X and incremented up as the A, B & C versions came out. I think my R-4 had a S/N in the 1000 range. ?

On eBay, never equate selling/listing price with 'worth'.

For an example, look at the absolutely stupid listing prices that
some jackass in Australia has on his/her Drake and other listings.

There is also a character on Vancouver Island who regularly lists
old Swan gear, and occasionally Drake gear, for completely absurd
prices.? And his shipping charges are even more insane.? The listings
do come and go, so maybe there are people out there stupid enough
to pay those ridiculously inflated prices.? Or maybe he just hauls
the stuff to the dump.? What I can't figure out is how he acquirs
it all in the first place.? He is not exactly located in the middle

Re: Stupid eBay Pricing

Things are only worth what some fool will pay for them.? As far as I know the most 'valuable thing made by man for weight and maybe size is not really worth anything.? That is a canceled postage stamp which last sold for over 9 million dollars..? If it was an inverted Jenny 24 cent stamp it would still be worth 24 cents but some fool paid 1.3 million for one.

Back to radios Last year at a hamfest I bought a Heathkit hw101 for $ 20.? Hooked it to a speaker and power supply I had and it seemed to work as well as expected.

Insurance is a racket at times.? ?Take a car that is 10 years old but only has about 30,000 miles on it. Maybe hard to replace for $ 10,000 but you will be lucky to get over $ 1000 for it if badly damaged.
