Different purposes, Tony. With the passage of time, the R-4C became a top-shelf DX and contest receiver. The older 4 Line receivers used L/C filters, which have a wider shape factor. Those sound better in casual use. The transmitters differed very little from the B to the C Line.?
The earlier T-4 and T-4X also had less sharp filters compared with the B and C transmitters.?

? ? ? I¡¯m curious. Watching the conversations regarding the TR¡¯s I kind¡¯a get the feeling that people prefer the earlier ones like the TR4 with the newer filters. What is the shortcoming of the TR4C ,if any, or is it because of fond memories of the older ones. Is it like comparing the basic R4B that does it all to the R4C where everything was an option? ?

I had a TR-3 that had been factory converted to a TR-4 and it still had the soupcan filters. It actually sounded great ¡ª 4-pole with wider bandwidth.?
It is possible to replace individual crystals inside the can (as can also be done with the newer filters) but it is a great deal of work.?
A TR-3 with working filters sounds great.?

Yes if you can find the right TR-4. Early TR-4s have the same soup can filter as the TR-3. Late ones have same or similar filter as the 4C that protrude through the chassis bottom to top. For that one to fit you¡¯ll need to cut the chassis of the TR-3. The mid production TR -4s are juuuuust right. ?You¡¯ll likely spend money on the TR-4 donor radio so you have to factor that in.
Also the TR-3 uses 12JB6 finals not 6JB6s. 12JB6 tubes seem to be harder to find and more expensive. ?Just something else to consider.
I¡¯m down this same track but just ahead of you so I¡¯m definitely not trying to talk you out of it. ?What I did was find my TR-3 for $100 on eBay. Find the right TR-4 parts rig. And then sell the TR-4C (TR-4Cw in my case). A straight trade of a TR -4c for a TR-3 is a bad trade unless mayyyyybe it already has the filter issue addressed. ?IMO of course.

Isn't it a somewhat simple swap of filters from a TR-4-series
into the TR-3?

Be aware that a TR-3 in good working order is probably still going to sound terrible because the SSB filters are bad. I have two and the filters are bad in both. Useable but poor audio. And because the filters are used in both directions your transmit is going to sound bad too. ?The options to fix it are limited, complicated, and costly.

I'd rather own a TR-3 in good working order.
My TR-4C is in good cosmetic condition (pics attached).
I'd like the same in return.
Please email me directly.
