SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Run for Your Life ? Anyone whose heart is touched by fear of God should not sit himself among a group unless he is certain that its members are careful in matters of speech. One should flee from a group of idle chatterers like from a fire. Why should one sit himself among people when he knows that he will be obligated to reprove them for speaking the forbidden? And if he will listen to their talk and remain silent, then he too will incur punishment. In the words of Rabbeinu Yonah (Sha’arei Teshuvah 3:197): ? Suppose a person hears others speak loshon hora, or vulgarities, or he finds himself among scoffers who speak disgracefully about the Torah and its mitzvos. Knowing that these people are stubborn and defiant, and that they will ignore any reproof, he chooses to remain silent. He will be punished for not rebuking them, for people may interpret his silence as agreement with what they have spoken. He is therefore obligated to respond to their words and rebuke them sharply, to demonstrate respect for the Torah and mitzvos which they have shamed, or for the righteous individual against whom they have spoken. This obligation is one of the factors which require a person to leave the company of the wicked, lest he listen to their evil talk and refrain from responding. Thus did King Shlomo state: “Do not envy men of evil, do not desire to be with them. For their hearts think of plunder, and their lips speak of wrongdoing” (Mishlei 24:1-2). |

开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHONA Swindler Comes to Town ? People who speak loshon hora tend to rationalize their sinful behavior with the contention that the listener wanted to hear the gossip and that he obviously enjoyed it. Moreover, the two remained good friends after their discussion. Could one really be guilty of causing his listener harm when he obviously had such a good time? The fallacy of such thinking can be explained with the following parable: ? A swindler came to a certain town and disguised himself as a respected leader of the community. When a visitor arrived in the town, the swindler welcomed him like an old friend and invited him to a local inn where the two could enjoy each other’s company. At the inn, the swindler said, “It’s been so many years since the last time we saw one another. My joy is indescribable. This calls for a celebration! Please, go to the counter and tell the manager to serve us the very best of everything he has to offer! Of course, I’ll pay the bill.’’ ? The two wined and dined until they had both eaten more than their fill. At that point, the swindler slipped out the door, leaving his “guest” with the enormous bill to pay. The poor fellow explained to the manager what had transpired, but to no avail. “All I know,’’ said the manager, “is that you came to the counter and ordered all that food and drink. Whatever happened between you and that other fellow is of no concern to me. Pay up!’’ ? One who listens to loshon hora is like the visitor in our parable. The listener is happy and feels no enmity toward the speaker, who seems to be entertaining him free of charge. The listener sees the speaker as his dear confidant, who tells him private information that he might not divulge to others. But all this is only on this world, while “the shop is open, and the Merchant extends credit” (Avos?3:20). In the next world, however, where “the ledger is open ... and the collectors make their rounds,’’ one will have to stand judgment for having listened to and accepted forbidden talk. Every word that he listened to will be recorded there, and he will have to pay a very heavy price. ? ? |

Celebrating success at each stage
Questions for Alan #6: Should I celebrate each kilo or pound I lose? ? It’s ALL good! If you are losing weight the right way, then every kilogram is a celebration and every kilogram matters. Two clients, Moe and Abe, both hit milestones last week. Moe crossed the down-50-kilo-mark (that’s 110 pounds). 50 kilos is a lot of weight. If you saw a “before and after” image you might not even know it was the same person. Abe came to The Wellness Clinic much more recently than Moe. Last week Abe crossed the down-5-kilo-mark. Why celebrate Abe’s milestone? Because after a lifetime of terrible struggle, now he knows how and what to eat and does daily exercise. Now Abe is ready to have 5 kilos turn into 50! ? Re: Any recommendation for a notary public licensed in NY state?
FYI the correct way to get a notary in Israel for the USA is to get an Israeli lawyer notary. The fee is standard so there is no competition for a better price. You then get the notarized document(s) stamped with an Apostile, which is according to the signers of the Hague Convention. You get the Apostille at a court house. The lawyer notary should know where you should go. The fee is also standard. It is not legal to have someone who is authorized as a notary in a US state to do it here, only in their state. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Best regards, Avigail Frij? SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Source of Merit ? To reject loshon hora as false is an exceedingly great source of merit — especially if the subject of the report is respected as a man of spiritual stature. Tanna D’Vei Eliyahu (II, ch. 7) states: ? It is said of Yeravam ben Yoash that he was a man who accorded the prophets honor. Therefore, those nations which the Holy One, Blessed is He, did not give over into the hands of Yehoshua bin Nun or David, King of Israel, He gave over into the hands of Yeravam ben Yoash, as it is written, “He [Yeravam] returned the borders of Israel from the approach to Chamas until the sea of Aravah ...” (II Melachim?14:25). Why did Yeravam, who was an idol worshiper, merit this? Because he did not accept loshon hora regarding the prophet Amos. ...At that moment [when he rejected the report against the prophet], God said, “Though the generation is guilty of idol worship and its leader is guilty of idol worship, nevertheless, the land which I promised to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov will be given over into his [Yeravam’s] hands.” ? |

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? No Credibility ? When one is told loshon hora and attempts to follow the Torah’s command to reject it as false, the evil inclination often counters with the following argument: “How can you not accept this report as fact? Dare you accuse the speaker of lying, of transgressing the prohibition, ‘Distance yourself from falsehood’? ” (Shemos 23:7). ? The response to this is as follows: If you were to see a Jew [who is knowledgeable in the laws of Jewish observance] flagrantly violate Torah law, would you then accept as fact whatever information he has to offer about others? Certainly not! Surely one cannot trust the word of one who openly flouts Hashem’s will. ? A Jew who speaks ill of his fellow has transgressed “You shall not be a gossipmonger among your people” (Vayikra?19:16), a most severe prohibition. As the halachah makes clear, this prohibition is violated even when the report is true. Thus, the speaker is guilty of severe transgression and, as such, has no credibility.? ? |
