[YaesuSystemFusion] UDRC? adds D-STAR to the DR-1X -- Available for Dayton Hamvention

Subject: [YaesuSystemFusion] UDRC? adds D-STAR to the DR-1X -- Available for Dayton Hamvention

?
When??offered their DR-1X Fusion repeater to US clubs for $500? (), the Northwest Digital Radio Club (not part of NW Digital Radio company) purchased one and put it on the air in Edmonds, WA as NW7DR. It wasn’t long before John (K7VE) looked at the external accessory adapter and wondered if the repeater could also do D-STAR.

At first, the experiments ran into a known lockup condition when using an external controller in combination with Yaesu Fusion Digital mode. With the latest generation firmware the DR-1X is able to provide D-STAR, Analog, and Fusion Digital all on the same channel on a per transmission switched basis.? Mode control is accomplished using GPIO pins on the Raspberry Pi.
NW Digital Radio looked at the Raspberry Pi system and soon decided that a combination control board with integrated CODEC could be built as a hat for 40 PIN GPIO headers on the Raspberry Pi?and thus is born the?Universal Digital Radio Controller?or UDRC.
With the addition of the UDRC, the DR-1X will operate in these configurations.
  • With the latest 1.00 family of firmware on the DR-1X
    • D-STAR/Analog
  • With the latest 1.10 family (after December 2015) on the DR-1X
    • D-STAR/Analog
    • D-STAR/Digital Fusion
    • D-STAR/Digital Fusion/Analog
The UDRC does not transcode?between D-STAR and Fusion, it allows the DR-1X to repeat D-STAR transmissions and use ircDDBGateway to communicate with stations, linked reflectors and repeaters, STARnet Digital Groups, etc.? Analog, Digital Fusion, and D-STAR are switched at the repeater on a per transmission basis.
The UDRC is designed as a simple to install addition to the DR-1X, however, NW Digital Radio has kept the experimenter in mind by providing various headers to allow straightforward hardware modification for integration with other hardware and applications. The built-in CODEC also will be available via a amateur packet radio standard mini DIN-6 port for software developers to adapt other modes, e.g. Packet Radio, VOIP (Asterisk/IRLP/Echolink), Codec-2, … Additionally, all GPIO and audio pins are available as solder through pads.
at with mail order delivery after Dayton Hamvention, and they will be available at the Dayton Hamvention (Booth EH0515, just past the Yaesu Booth near the opening to the outside sales area) for immediate delivery while supplies last (additional production is scheduled for delivery).

NW7DR has been testing the UDRC integration on the DR-1X for D-STAR for nearly a year. It has been running with Digital WIRES-X (via RF) on America-Link and with a UDRC on busy D-STAR reflectors for weeks without a lockup (Firmware v1.10D).? Running on both a WIRES-X Room and a D-STAR reflector at the same time is not a recommended configuration, but this was a test for robustness.? When running multi-mode on a repeater, it is recommended that users turn on BCLO (Busy Channel Lockout) and CTCSS/DCS squelch to avoid transmitting over an existing transmission running under a different mode.

When attached to a DR-1X, the UDRC and Raspberry Pi are powered by the DR-1X via the accessory jack.

Re: Icom D-STAR ID-1 1.2 GHz Sale at HRO

Word has it that AES has stopped selling the ID-1, and in fact I don't
see it on their website.?? I honestly haven't used mine too much.
We sent pics to another club via the repeater on Field Day, and did
a demo at a hamfest once.?? Sort of hard to justify the use for data
when there are possibly other data radio configurations out there that
are faster.

They had a few in stock when I checked yesterday.

Linking issue maybe?

Our local area repeaters just got updated and had backups made of the Hard-drives. We believe that we have lost functionality of being able to link our VHF module to the 1.2 module on the same repeater, i.e. KF5VBE A to KF5VBE C. We think we remember being able to do this but as we did not do it very often, if at all we are not sure. All of our other linking functionality is working just fine, and this may be just a mass case of old timers disease or it never did it in the first place and we were not aware of that. I am personally of the mind that it did work and we have just lost that capability, but then again I ain't as young as I used to be!
Any help greatly appreciated!

AL
