Re: Done In// #Mirriam-Redmond; #Bettina-Davies

Mirriam watched the little performance. The customers would laugh this woman off the stage, it would not be pretty. But Mirriam took it for what it was, just a silly attempt at humor and smiled.

"Nice effort. Needs work...a lot of work. Still, I will admit something to you. While I have a good voice and can sing quite well, my dancing is ..........adequate at best. The trick is to show my legs and on occasion tease them into thinking they are going to catch glimpses of other parts of me. They love that," she explained.

"But please don't go thinking I strip naked or anything. Because I don't. It's the mystery which attracts them. I figure once they would see everything, well...how would you top that?" she added.

Re: Done In// #Mirriam-Redmond; #Bettina-Davies

"Thank you for the compliment...I think," Mirriam now was wiping at her mistake, "One of the many reasons why I do NOT make bricks."
"Was a compliment," Bettina commented with a grin, "an' bricks...could be worse!"

She paused then to glance over to where the new girl was shedding those muddy cover-alls, "Wanna put that out in the hallway then...thank you."
"Yeah, I can do that...was gonna hang 'em out a window ta let 'em dry out a bit."? She had managed to shed them without leaving a mess, a well-practiced habit that took a little finesse.

The brunette then rolled her eyes, "Do you honestly think I would do all this just to cook?"

She did not wait for an answer though, "I am the Paradise singer and dancer. I entertain the menfolk primarily."
"Ah, right, should'a guessed."? Honestly, it made good sense. Mirriam really was pretty, so that even not taking into account talent, she would attract attention.? "Hey, maybe I should try that, too!"? Starting with an ungainly twirl, she launched into an awkward dance and off-key tune.? She was kidding, but she was having fun, and that was helping her to work off some newbie nerves.

"Come on in. It's open."

No doubt it was her new room mate as Aury never knocked and he also never let any customers go up that stairway either.
Bettina pushed open the door, hesitating a second even though she'd been invited in.? She smiled as she glanced at her room mate, allowing as how she had never used makeup herself, nor ever had been gussied.

"Seems like yer pretty enough," she commented as she moved toward her bed, "got yer nice dresses an' all."? There was no hint of judgment or jealousy.? "Don't suit what I do, makin' bricks an' all."? Grinning, she started to peel out of her cover-alls that protected her regular clothes.? "What is ya do here, anyway?? Not th' cook?"

Aurelian saw Bettina come back in and, to be truthful, had on occasion spied on her out one of the back windows to check on how she had been doing. He was happily impressed she obviously was not lazy so left her alone. He really was not a hard taskmaster. At the moment she went up the stairway, he was too busy with customers at the bar to say anything to her but maybe later he would compliment her work ethic. Well, maybe he should take a closer look at the bricks though too.

Mirriam was sitting in front of her dressing table mirror as she applied her makeup, an almost every evening ritual for she would soon be going downstairs to entertain the menfolk with songs and dancing and of course, her charm. She was in a chemise for now but would soon throw one of her fancy colorful dresses on to complete her preparation. There was a knock on the door then. It startled her just enough to throw off her aim on the eyeliner she had been working on. With a muttered curse, she then turned toward the door.

"Come on in. It's open."

No doubt it was her new room mate as Aury never knocked and he also never let any customers go up that stairway either.

While she was no stranger to hard work, and certainly not adverse to it, making bricks was labor-intensive and tedious,by the time Bettina decided it was time to stop for the day she was sore and exhausted,? although she had managed to meet her self-imposed quota of bricks for the day.? She was filthy and famished, but even so, she still had to check on her horse and get cleaned up before she went upstairs to the room she shared with Miss Mirriam.? At least she was able to get most of the muck off and change clothes so the other woman wouldn't be offended, and as she headed upstairs, she munched on a hunk of bread that she had stashed from her earlier meal -- she wasn't sure if the terms of work allowed for dinner.

And since she was essentially a guest, she knocked on the door to the shared room and waited, hoping that Mirriam hadn't changed her mind.

M H

Aury smiled back at Cobbs, "I pride myself on taking chances, living life on the edge, my friend."? He knew Mirriam really well and this new gal seemed quite decent so he wasn't all that worried.

Once Bettina had finished her stew and drink, Aury poured Cobbs another one 'on the house he informed the man' and then motioned for Bettina to follow him. They ended up in the yard behind the saloon, there was a shed out there too, even a small corral where Aury kept his own stock, a mule and a horse. Further back was a barn like structure and within that he did most of his homebrewing. But he pointed out his so-called brickyard.

"There it is, Bett, darlin', your new workplace. And a finer mudpit I do not imagine you will find on this whole planet."

There were tools there and frames for the bricks plus another necessity, a well close by so she could have the necessary water to make that mud when Mother Nature didn't provide. He then explained how he made the bricks even giving her a few tips he'd learned but ended with.

"If you think you can do it differently or better, then that's your call, missy. Anyhow I will leave you to get to it."

"Oh, and when yer done...............take your boots off before you come back in," he closed with a grin.

Time Jump #OOC

Hello all!

The time jump to the autumn equinox will be happening in the next few days. More information on it can be found here:

This will be a 3 day jump forward as the current game day is 20th. If you want to summarise what happens in those 3 days or write joint posts then go for it!

All existing threads can be finished up if the players wish it. I will just add a new tag to them to make it clear that they are happening in the past.

In the new game day there will be some threads established that people can join, or you can create your own threads.

Thanks,

Jo

The suggestion of ¡°more¡± was always enough to make Devon blush. He hid it by working his way out of his jumper, and then sitting down on the blanket, his back to Rosalind. The long summer hours of woodworking and hunting showed in his frame - he¡¯d lost weight and put on muscle. If the pace of work continued as it was, he¡¯d avoid putting the weight back on, the way he usually did in winter.

He leaned forward, folding his arms over his knees and propping his chin on them. ¡°Other than the garden, what have you been up to?¡± he asked inanely. This was probably why he was thirty-three and without a partner, he thought to himself. He could hardly make conversation with a tree, never mind another person.

OOC: Sorry it took me a while, I've been dealing with a lot. Details privately.?

"I think we're more temporary than they are." Anna said, handing Cai an apron and getting her own from the hooks on the wall. "Which bothers me. If they view us as just another hunting ground, they're going to step up their attacks, and if they step up their attacks, then we might see something bigger than the occasional scree raid." The space was limited, which made their movements a lot smaller and more restrained so they wouldn't bump into each other. "I think we should probably find some low-tech way to enforce the boundary. And probably a better way to patrol it, because if things are as bad as you say they are Out There, we're in for a lot more than just attacks on farms." For some reason, Anna rubbed the scarred patch of skin on her neck and shuddered a little.?

"Thanks for offering to talk to Snicks, by the way." Anna said, stepping over to the side so Cai could work. She took down a set of gleaming metal tools with a variety of uses-- of course, Cai had her own, but Anna as always offered a full service for the room. "I'm thinking if they find a few corpses, they might think about the boundary. Sort of what Earthers used to do with feral hogs." And of course what the corporation used to do in conflict areas, but something told her reminding everyone of the dirty corporate tactics was a bad idea. "It'll also save me having to walk the boundary night of the solstice festival. You goin' to that at all?" It was a huge event, of course, and Anna's family always went, but the farmer tended to spend half the night walking the border and couldn't enjoy the celebrations when she was?there.?

Cai followed behind Anna listening attentively; Anna wasn¡¯t much of a talker so when she spoke Cai listened carefully. She could empathise with the other woman¡¯s frustration. More and more predators were coming through the barrier and they were ill equipped to deal with them. They were growing bolder or more desperate, Cai wasn¡¯t sure, but her traps were catching them closer and closer to the force field.

Years ago she would need to go further into the Out There to catch anything. Now she barely needed to step outside. It worried her, but she couldn¡¯t say she was upset with the additional meat on her table or furs to trade with. The people in town liked to ignore the Out There, they wouldn¡¯t want to hear it if Cai started talking about the barrier failing and the increase in animals coming through.

¡°I will talk to him about some lethal counter measures as well. It would be better for all if something was in place before the barrier falls. I would ask him to look at the barrier itself but no one knows where it is controlled from.¡± That annoyed her to no end. No one, not even travellers from other cities, knew anything about the force field, where it was powered from or where it was controlled from.

Stepping into the cutting room Cai dumped her kills and took a look at the screes; there was enough meat on them to make it worthwhile butchering, ¡°Thanks, these will be a good addition.¡± She smoothed her hands over them, examining them with dispassion her fingers slowing over the ribcage and stomach,

¡°They weren¡¯t starving,¡± she observed, ¡°this is a problem. If they were starving then this would be an act of desperation. The Out There has a cold season where nothing grows. Starving during this period is natural. If they are coming through when the hunting is good then they are expanding their hunting grounds and this won¡¯t stop. Damn,¡± she dropped the carcass and cursed under her breath, ¡°I was hoping this would just be temporary during their cold season.¡±

Devon: Devon nodded and followed Rosalind into the garden, his eyes wandering over the layout. "It looks like you've all done a lot of work out here," he commented. "But then, it's been a bit since I was here." He smiled at Rosalind. "It's been a busy summer, at least for me. I hope the same for you and yours?"

------------------------------------------------------------

¡°We¡¯re always busy, thank goodness,¡± Rosalind said, coming up on his side to survey her beloved garden. Little gave her such a sense of peace as spending time in its embrace, weeding and picking herbs and flowers for teas and ointments.?

Grabbing a blanket, she shook it out on the porch and gestured at it. ¡°Please sit,¡± she said before starting to roll up her sleeves. ¡°I¡¯ll give you a shoulder massage, and if you want anything more,¡± and this time she drew the word out just enough to convey that particular meaning, ¡°Let me know,¡± she said and smiled. ¡°Do you prefer with or without oil? If you want oil. I¡¯ll have to ask you to remove your jumper.¡±

Mirriam smirked at the saucy response, it was probably the same sort of way she'd have responded if the shoe had been on the other foot.
"Glad you put that last qualifier in there, need to know my boundaries I guess."
"Then we're good!"? Bettina grinned at the young woman, although she really wasn't too difficult to live with, and if bunking together didn't work, Bettina was happy to seek shelter with her horse...wouldn't be the first time she'd done that, and there were worse places to lay your head.

"When you're done eating and Aury is done with showing you about, just go upstairs and then turn left. Mine's the first room on the left. I'll leave the door open so you can just come in.? Don't bring your horse."
"Really?"? Frowning, Bettina shook her head, then glanced at Aurelian.? "No horses?? Poor Dobbin, it's gonna break his big equine heart!"

"You are a fortunate man, Aury. That could have blown up something fierce in your face" he chuckled, the man was a risk taker but of course he owned the place.

"Congrats" Cobbs said to Bettina and clicked his glass against her stew bowl.
"Thanks!"? Raising her bowl, Bettina clinked with his glass, then downed the rest of the stew.? "Well, got me a good deal'a work ta get to.? Good ta make yer acquaintance, Mr. Cobbs, an' Mr. Aury, thanks fer th' job..." she gave the man a cheeky grin, "I think!"

Aidan turned his clear blue gaze on Sinjin. ¡°You¡¯ve done much to change my perspective,¡± he teased.

Aury smiled at Cobbs, "Then I'd need to cut a deal with Virgil. This here young lady came to me and we came to an agreement. I'll honor my part in it."

The rancher nodded his head, not that he had anything against his son's life at Hanami but it would do him some good to get out of there once in a while. He was a jack of all trades after all, at least that's what Cobbs told himself... Not that some of the old stereotypes he grew up with nagged him that his boy was living with three other people.

Well at least the ladies seem to be making do next to him. Mirriam told Bettina that she had made a good deal, and he had to agree with the singer. Girl sure was a cheeky little missy. But they were joshing with each other by the time Mirriam was headed back to her room.

"You are a fortunate man, Aury. That could have blown up something fierce in your face" he chuckled, the man was a risk taker but of course he owned the place.

"Congrats" Cobbs said to Bettina and clicked his glass against her stew bowl.

Aury smiled at Cobbs, "Then I'd need to cut a deal with Virgil. This here young lady came to me and we came to an agreement. I'll honor my part in it."

Meanwhile the ladies were having their little intro chat. Mirriam could be blunt on occasion, apparently she decided to pick this as one of those times. More likely she was simply a bit peeved at him for volunteering her room without asking her, Aury thought.

"Don't see as how a bit of labor is a harm," Bettina observed with a shrug, "but I do allow it isn't for everyone, and if it brings a meal and a bed..."? To make her point (and she was hungry!) she took another healthy bite of stew and bread.

"Oh I'll grant you that, you cut yourself a fine enough deal, congrats," Mirriam nodded then suddenly asked if she snored.

The men busied themselves at that point with Cobb asking and Aury pouring another shot of whiskey, each deciding to let the ladyfolk hammer this out. Hopefully without a fight!

Bettina answered Mirriam with a cheeky grin, "Only when I sleep."? Then she added, "Just toss a pillow at me and I'll stop. ? Not over my face, mind you..."? She grinned, then resumed her meal.

Mirriam smirked at the saucy response, it was probably the same sort of way she'd have responded if the shoe had been on the other foot.
"Glad you put that last qualifier in there, need to know my boundaries I guess."

"When you're done eating and Aury is done with showing you about, just go upstairs and then turn left. Mine's the first room on the left. I'll leave the door open so you can just come in.Don't bring your horse."

That line was said totally deadpan but Aury grinned. Yeah, he figured they'd probably get along just fine.

"I told you....I do not do manual labor," Mirriam spoke first to Aury then to the newcomer, "Congratulations on your new job, better you than me, my dear."
"Don't see as how a bit of labor is a harm," Bettina observed with a shrug, "but I do allow it isn't for everyone, and if it brings a meal and a bed..."? To make her point (and she was hungry!) she took another healthy bite of stew and bread.

"Do you snore?" came her immediate question.
"Huh?"? That caught her off-guard, not the sort of question one expected to get, and for an instant she didn't have a reply.

Cobbs coughed into his whiskey when Mirriam asked Bettina if she snored. Oh my. He hoped Aury wasn't setting himself up for a cat fight. He slid his empty glass to the barkeep, "Think you better fill me back up".
Almost simultaneously, Bettina answered Mirriam with a cheeky grin, "Only when I sleep."? Then she added, "Just toss a pillow at me and I'll stop. ? Not over my face, mind you..."? She grinned, then resumed her meal.

Mirriam was a pretty little thing with a heavenly voice when she sang. Cobbs only felt slightly guilty about admiring a girl that was younger than his daughter Nova... slightly. His mouth curled when Bettina relayed a bevy of odd talents that would probably make her better suited to entertain some of the kids in town that were too young for schooling and work.

Aury filled in that she was new and looking to trade work for a bed and a meal. And he kindly offered Mirriam's since she wasn't the type to make adobe bricks. "Should have sent someone over to Hanimi to get Virgil for you, Aury. You know my boy would do that sort of thing... not taking away from Miss Bettina here, of course" the? burly rancher said with a mirthful grin. He was old fashion he supposed and always felt certain work was not for feminine hands.

Cobbs coughed into his whiskey when Mirriam asked Bettina if she snored. Oh my. He hoped Aury wasn't setting himself up for a cat fight. He slid his empty glass to the barkeep, "Think you better fill me back up".

M H

Mirriam gave a quick smile and wave back to Cobbs, he was a good man, he always applauded her act with proper enthusiasm. Then it was back to the matter at hand, this new girl.

"Mirriam."?? Bettina smiled at the other young woman, although she could tell that she was not only surprised that she was getting a roommate, but didn't seem especially thrilled.?? "I neither dance nor sing, but I know Cat's Cradle and can pull a coin out of yer ear," she declared proudly, "and fling payin' cards, too, but them's just tricks."?? Her grin widened.?? "By th' end of th' day I'll be makin' adobe bricks with th' best of 'em!"

"Well, that's good I suppose, we won't be in competition then," Mirriam gave the slightest of shrugs still obviously assessing this woman. But then the last part explained a lot. Aury instantly added clarification.

"The gal came for some work and a meal, she's new in town. And since YOU have refused all my entreaties to do the bricks, I have arranged for her to do it. In return the poor thing needs a roof over her head and a place to sleep. Your room and bed should be just the thing."

"I told you....I do not do manual labor," Mirriam spoke first to Aury then to the newcomer, "Congratulations on your new job, better you than me, my dear."

"Do you snore?" came her immediate question.
