Help: How Install CHIRP on Linux Mint 20.3 Uma?

I give up.? Running CHIRP on Linux Mint 19.3 was easy.? But since going to Linux Mint 20 (now Mint 20.3 Uma) I find no way to install CHIRP anymore.? Is it even possible?? And if so, can someone tell me how to do it, in EXACTING detail.? I find no answers on Google that has helped.? And I'm far from being a computer programmer.? Thank you, 73 Richard AG5M

Did you try using the flatpack?? It may work.

The source tarball will most like not work on a modern distribution without a whole lot of work.

I've installed the CHIRP flatpak build on Mint 20.3 and the flatpak, snap and appimage builds on Mint 21. For the flatpak build I used instructions that I googled on the internet. Here is the link...

Good luck,

Thank you Jim, I think I'll wait until Python 3 becomes available. Good idea?
However, I notice the article link you sent was dated Nov. 13, 2020, almost two years ago. Has there been no update since then? I guess I don't know if Python 3 is out or not. 73, Richard AG5M

It's in the repository for Mint.? I just installed it on a 20.3 machine last week with

sudo apt-get install chirp

Yes. Doing it this way gives you the ability to say that you have installed CHIRP. But, unfortunately, installing CHIRP from apt or synaptic does not install the latest CHIRP build and will be missing support for the most recent radios.

If the radios that you own are supported using this method, you are fine. But if you have CHIRP supported radios that are not supported by the CHIRP that is installed using this method, you will have to uninstall CHIRP and then install the latest flatpak (or snap or appimage) build.

CHIRP is developed by volunteers. Not many volunteers are willing to participate for the length of time and amount of work that is required to port CHIRP from Python2 to Python3. You can wait if you want, but you will be waiting a long time.

The CHIRP flatpak build is a part of the CHIRP build process. It is always up-to-date. I think the snap and appimage builds are too, but I won't swear to it.

It's been available for some time now. Their website says the final version was
released Dec 3, 2008.

Python 3.01 is available now:

Download links for the tar ball and Windows installers are at the page above.

Jim, I followed the instructions on the page you listed and everything went well. I now have Chirp working on my Linux Mint 20.3 laptop. Many thanks. 73, Richard AG5M
