Well, it starts again. I can't seem to even load this thing to try and USE it! I even successfully removed the "This PC" from the Desk Top! It took two years for me to successfully load and use fldigi and WSJT-X because most of time I have no idea what to do next.
I have a Chuwi (walmart cheapo) laptop with Windows 10. Please describe step-by-step, button-by-button how to install, post a desktop icon (if required) and then how to chirp my BearFang UV-5R (without a "BAND" button). Thank you in advance! 73 Karl KI4ZUQ |
Re: Join & post
Once you understand how it works, it is really easy. Visit the miklor.com website, choose the UV-5R and scroll down to the Manual Programming section. Use one of the several manual programming guides there (same info just presented in different ways). Then if you still have trouble, mention which guide you are using and where you are stuck and we can help you get past the rough spot.

My advice is to get the official Baofeng cable for a little over $8: Other cables MAY (or may not) work. This one has the FDTI chipset in it. Some come with a Prolific chipset, and there are a lot of "clones" for the Prolific chip. The problem is with the clones, the device driver does not work as it recognizes it as a fake. You'll need to install the driver software for the cable. The cable should come with instructions for that. Windows may install the correct driver. Download CHIRP and install it: read or watch these and then program your radio: I haven't vetted the above links but they appear to be instructive. Make sure you pick the correct COM port for the radio and that you have the volume control wide open since it uses the audio circuit as part of the path to programming the radio's database. You download FROM the radio first, and SAVE the original database, even if it's all blank. Then you modify the fields to match the repeaters and simplex frequencies you want, then UPLOAD to the radio. I believe Baofeng also provides a downloadable software to program the radio with. I have no experience with that so if you use that, you're on your own. CHIRP is free. There's also RT System's software and cable. Together they should run you about $50-$60. It's a little smoother to work with but not much. It's easier to get local repeaters automatically loaded based on miles from your zip code, but you can do that with CHIRP with a little more effort. Chances are that at least some of the Repeaterbook repeaters you'd get through CHIRP or RT System's software will be paper repeaters and not actually in operation. We have a CHIRP group, too, but I doubt you'll need to join it. If you have trouble with CHIRP, then join the other group, but remember, we're a self-help group. CHIRP has some way of feeding back problems on their site. I've used a few different "flavors" of both Mint and Ubuntu. I've also tried a few others. Actually, it probably needs that, anyway. It seems that, after a while, updates don't always complete. Once in a while the boot sector gets corrupted and I have to reinstall for that reason. Hope you get it working and that the setup.py works. that is different from the usual. Whether you want to run it or not is up to you. That is where the problem lies... It is extremely specific. Every Python package I have dealt with?has a script named "install.py" or something related to the package name. Chirp Next has nothing like that. The closest thing is the "setup.py" I have mentioned before. No need to overcomplicate this. Re: Chirp Next Install Help
I didn't see a pre-compiled executable for Chirp Next, just the legacy versions. Now GWBASIC I can relate to! :) The analogy makes sense, but I don't see anything with the py extension with a name that would lead me to think it's the main file. That said, there is a file "setup.py" but I know so little about Python, I'm almost afraid to try "py setup.py" on the CLI! Turns out it is Python. Are you running an OS that there isn't already a compiled executable file on their website? My guess is that you're running Linux. I don't know what all OS's they support but the Windows version works fine. If you're running some flavor of Linux you might be able to run the Windows version under WINE or Crossover. I don't run any ham programs under my installation of Mint, but I have run some Windows programs under Crossover, which is an enhanced version of WINE as I understand it. I don't know a lot about Python but I think it's a runtime thing that you type something like PY and the name of the file in the directory/folder the file is in and it will just run. Sort of like back when we ran small programs under GWBASIC when it came with MSDOS before Windows became popular. You will need Python 3.x installed for this. And I think this will have to start in a terminal window in the correct directory (where the Python file is). I know this isn't much help. I'm not sure if this other group might be helpful but you're welcome to post this in the hamradiohelp group, too. I wouldn't expect to get a lot of replies there, either, but it's worth a try. Since this may be just a generic "how do I run this with Python" question, and if you're running Linux, you might try and see if they can help, and if you're running Ubuntu, the Ubuntu forums might be helpful. Getting a Python script to run should be the same no matter which distro you're running. Once you get the program running, then we might be of some help. Chirp Next Install Help
Hello, All... I decided to move up to the Chirp Next version, so I grabbed the only download I saw:?chirp-20230307.tar.gz? ? I assumed this was going to be a C/C++ source collection. Turns out it is Python. Now, I am NOT familiar with Python at all. Are there instructions someplace?that tell me what to do with this? Take Care & 73 de KC6UFM Charles |
Re: Baofeng GT-3WP
You likely do not have a proper connection between the programming cable and radio. For example, leave the programming cable disconnected from the radio and attempt a download. The error message will be the same.
I have one of the expensive (FTDI) programming cables and it would not work on my UV-9R (basically the same connection as the GT-3WP). The shroud of the programming cable connector and the boss of the radio didn't mate up properly and caused the pins to not line up properly with the pads. After looking closely and determining how they were misaligned, I made some modifications to the connector with a file and finally got the pins to line up correctly. After that, it worked fine.
