If you want to see a frequency instead of a name, you simply don't program a name. If you want to have it both ways, then you must program 2 channels (one with a name, one without a name).

What I'm looking for is the following:
1.? Base file for the Baofeng VU16 Pro Dual Band radio
A lot of CHIRP users either don't know for forget that they should save the first successful download, unedited, to a CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file to be kept in a save place as a backup. A recent feature added to CHIRP-next is automatic backups. If you have downloaded from your radio using a fairly recent build of CHIRP-next, you may have one of these backups stored on your computer.
For Windows users, you can access the "backup" folder by...
1. Type "%appdata%" (without the " marks) into the Windows search box and press enter. The Windows file Explorer should appear located in the "Roaming" folder.
2. Double-click the "CHIRP" folder to open it.3. Double-click the "backups" folder to open it and see all of your saved backup files. Hopefully the file that you seek is there.

?
2.? The original numbers for the squelch settings for the VU16 Pro??
Do you mean UV-16 Pro? I believe that I have a brand new UV-16 Pro V2 that I recently received. My intention is to make sure that it is supported by CHIRP. I haven't opened it yet. If that is the radio that you mean and #1 doesn't work for you, I could dig it out to find the numbers.

Your subject line has the model as VU16 Pro. Did you mean UV-16 Pro?

I've used both RT Systems and CHIRP on several radios. The RT software has a
nicer look and feel to it but they both have done a good job for me.

If you're having trouble with it, try opening the volume control wide open
before doing any data transfer. Some models use the audio channel when
transferring data. I had a problem with one of my radios until I read about
this.

CHIRP Tips Videos

There is a lot of useful content out on YouTube that provides step-by-step instructions for some general workflows with CHIRP. However, there are a lot of other things that you can do with CHIRP that never seems to get covered. There is now an official 'CHIRP Tips' YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@chirp-tips) which was created to be a source of very short to-the-point videos that cover some of the more obscure features. Things you may or may not know about, or that you feel you don't quite understand enough to use properly, or things that have been added and gone unnoticed. The first videos that have been added to the channel are listed below.

Re: Help Install Chirp Linux Mint v21.1

After getting some excellent help from Jim and others, I was successful in getting Chirp New to work on my Linux Mint ver 21.2 laptop. Thank you all SO much for the help. It was not as hard as I originally thought, once I was put on the right track to understand what I was doing wrong. And got the commands right. As well as downloading the correct file. 73, Richard AG5M

Hi Bruce.

Don't know if you have solved it but I've had the same problem you had with CHIRP. I have Ubuntu too and trying to find a solution I founded your report.

The problem appeared when I upgraded certain system files so I found this problem:

When upgrading the python files, the module collections give you the ABC method Callable.
The chirp file pyPEG.py call this method as "collections.Callable" three times.
You can found the file under: /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/chirp/

I've try this solution and works fine for me:

duplicate the file pyPEG.py and save the copy with another name (only for backup, I use to do so)
edit pyPEG.py with root permission (sudo...)
substitute the three calls "collections.Callable" with "collections.abc.Callable", so the line remains like isinstance(pattern, collections.abc.Callable):

I try to edit the file as noted, but am unable to save it.? How do I get permission to save the file?

I also read:

Dan accepts pull requests on github.com and also via mailing list (I can't get emails from the mailing list since outlook.com appears to be silently blocking them so I go through github.com).

I go there, but do not understand what to do with it.? As you can tell, I'm not an experienced Linux person in these matters.? Can anyone help me with getting Chirp to work on this Linux Mint laptop?? Or if it going to be SO complicated, I'll just stick with my Windows machine and call it good.? But would really like to understand this and get it to work on Linux.

Thank you so much, 73 Richard AG5M

I can't tell you where the pyPEG.py file is but I can recommend one Linux
editor. It's called Kate. It's really part of KDE and to install Kate, it will
require some KDE files to support it. Once you have it installed, I think you
can run it from the command line typing Kate. It probably will also show in your
menu system.

I used Kate even though I was using a Gnome desktop.

There are other editors. Kate is easy to learn. Once you find where that file is
to be edited, you can click on File, Open, then navigate to the folder and open
that file, make changes, then save it.

I am NOT a Linux guru. I've edited files before to fix a problem or to prevent
the touchpad from working while typing, and very early on (about 1999), I pulled
together information to get Linux to run on a Dell Inspiron laptop, which
required editing.

Re: Help Install Chirp Linux Mint v21.1

Jim,
I followed the instructions you list below, several times, but there are commands in there I do not understand how to use. I have to leave this on the back burner for a few weeks, got other things that I need to do. It is Chirp Next that isn't working, keep getting the no "collections.Callable" error. I see there is a fix but I am not astute enough yet with Linux to fix it. Have more to learn next month. How to get into, edit, and save (with permission) that pyPEG.py file. I'm sure it is not hard, but my inexperience with Linux is the problem. More later... I'm sure, with some basic help, I'll figure this out.

Chirp, or chirp-next? If you copy-n-paste the command and results, others can better understand the nature of the difficulties you're experiencing, and can better advise.

Yes. Absolutely correct. That has been a RadioReference requirement for as long as I have been using CHIRP (since 2012). They have to cover the expenses of running their website somehow.

Wouxun KG-UV8E unable to see or change settings

Download from radio. Get the image file, I'm able to change. Add, delete and do whatever you want, when I click on settings there's nothing there, just a blank page. No type of format, no error message, no nothing. So unable to have Repeater names, channels shows nothing on display of HT
?Anyone seen this before? Is there a fix??
