Re: Leni conversion #3

here is the removed assumed bad T1 transformer.? I took the metal frame off already...I intend to pry inside to learn.

I noticed on the top, a coating is missing on the pin 1/2 side.? it is coated on all the other sides.

Re: Leni conversion #3

I will get this ENI working as an ENI.? Then I'll one day convert it to a LENi when the mood strikes me.? My mandatory COVID work from home policy is over and I have to start going back into the office for my job which cuts down on my hobby time? :(? ??

Re: Leni conversion #3

Don't ever give up on the ENi '700, they can usually be salvaged, or at worst supply unobtainable parts for then next one.

Hint: Take of the range selector knob. If it's original is says DAKA-WARE, Chicago.(Best knobs ever made, bar none)

Guitar amp guys are paying $35 for one clean knob.

and yes this failed one I have was dunked in something looks like shellac.??

Re: Leni conversion #3

That's why this Group exists Michael,

Please report your findings back for other to read too.

ENi especially used a great many different transformers. They came out a few years later than all the others, perhaps their game plan was? to use up all the leftover transformers from the other projects?

If you see one that looks likes it has been dipped in paint or shellac, those are the ugliest but most reliable ones!?
The prettiest one looks modern, very clean, no coating....it's fragile as heck with exposed almost microscopic wires all over.? Yuk!

Yes, pick a random terminal from each of the 3 windings, check it against a random terminal on each of the other two, until each one has been testing on the other two, one way or another.
so it might be check pin 2 to 4 then to 6? to start, then check pin 4 to 6 (I think that's all)

You won't regret having those Michael C. !

One day they might be worth their weight in gold.

Re: Leni conversion #3

That's the absolute best way to test them Michael, congratulations! .

I forgot this last message, also check one winding of each coil against the frame of the transformer, there should be and must be infinite resistance in other words they don't connect in any way inside

ok, bad transformer.? ?

Multimeter continuity check:? ? pins 1-2? 1.826 no beep.? ?pins 3-4 good.? pins 5-6 good.??

multimeter resistance checks:? pins 1-2 6.5kohms;? pins 3-4 .005 kohm;? pins 5-6 .008 kohms

and to these measurements, I completely removed the transformer from the board,? scraped the leads a bit to expose clean metal, then probed with multimeter.??

Re: Leni conversion #3

Ooop! Maybe. Maybe not. Infinity would be bad for sure, did you remember to check between the winding? None of the should have resistance to the other ones.

Although I have checked a few recently and they were all below 4k Ohms.

Lenox, have you checked any resistance reading on a good transformer?

Michael, Lenox is the CDV-700 expert. I recommend buy the transformers too, all of them if you can. (and quick, once this is out they'll be gone in an instant)

Thanks, Lenox, for that "inside tip".

Very useful.

Hi, Michael,

?

?

?

?

These appear to be Lionel transformers.? However, I once used one in a Victoreen CD V-700 and it worked fine.

?

You might have to change the mounting configuration.? I don¡¯t remember how the ENI transformers are mounted.? These mount through two slots with the tabs bent over.

?

It¡¯s worth a try if you don¡¯t find anything else.? If you do the Leni conversion, you make it into a Lionel so it should work.

hi Lenox,?

the ENI transformer just sits flush on the board and held on by the six wire pins through the board.? ?and it looks to my untrained eyes that the Lionel uses the same 3 winding transformer as the LENi/ENI.? and sure, what do I have to lose in trying one these out.? ?thanks for the link.? ?

and further examination,? these Lionel transformers will require some creative wiring to put on the ENI board.? But - no problem for me - a bobby pin and duct tape expert.? creative wiring and soldering is my specialty. and I guarantee it won't be pretty, but it will work? :)? ?

Re: Leni conversion #3

PS the secondary winding should be around 3700 Ohms and no connection to ground when pin 1 is isolated or any other pins (when wires 1 and 2 are both isolated.? The secondary inductance will measure an incredible 80 HENRIES? (not milliHenries')

Pin 2 can be isolated by removing one lead of the HV diode its basic resiatance test super easy.

Correct on the pins Michael C.

When someone stumbles across the obove link, we need a better rendition of the schematics of both ENi and Lionel CDV-700's.

I think a guy named Frank Roberts used to guide groups prospecting for pegmatites in the? Badu hill? area.? Do you know of any public land in the Llano uplift counties that might be good for such prospecting?? I know there is precious little public lands in TX, but there are road cuts, parks, rivers etc.

?
Electro-Neutronics inc (ENi) CDV-700 HV transformer failure modes and other data:

Geo: Measured resistance of a good secondary winding, 3730 Ohms.

Per, LA9ZEA from Norway had a failed secondary recently, he tried to take the transformer apart, but this one was potted in shellac, so that was a no-go. I asked him to micrometer read the diameter of the wire for our archives here's his reply:

George
With the micrometer I have it was 0.1mm
Its really not easy to see and to move since its embedded with lackeur. Its really delicate, and I have over the last few years "lost" my youth vision and have to rely on glasses and good lighting....its the thin wire all the way down to the post.

Thanks for that information Per!

With the resistance and diameter we can roughly figure the length of the secondary wire. Soon I'll do an inductance reading for a third data point to calculate the number of turns.

INDUCTANCE- Very careful inductance measurements were carried out on a few transformer secondaries, with the rectifier diodes removed.
Sample 1 was tested to be 65.4 Henries. Higher than I thought.
Sample 2 was 53.4 Henries,
Next were these values:96H, 77H, 51H, 58H, 65H.

No two were alike. Different styles were noted, at least 3 completely different versions in this small sampling.
so take any number between 50H and 100H and that's probably "good enough".? Geo
