This is where the cheap “Multi-Function tester TC1” or similar shine.? They can help test and determine the type of component like resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes/LEDs, transistors (MOS and JFETS, bipolar thyristors) and shows the E-B-C, G-S-D or A-K pins.? Can test low voltage zeners and some infrared transmitters.? Does ESR measurement on capacitors.? Measures batteries to 4.5V.? No need to worry if you have the right pin out, you can let the TC1 determine it.? Can’t do highly accurate or high value measurements but it is great for a quick test of components. ?It is not super accurate on all the parameters it detects, but you can tell a Germanium from a silicon device via A-K or Vbe drops and know for sure what pin is what on identified devices.? ?My only real complaint was the battery always discharged over several days on mine so I added a real on-off switch that disconnects the little USB rechargeable battery.? I have not seen others complain about the problem so there may be something leaking more than the sleep current with mine.? I haven’t had to charge it in months since I added the switch. ?It has been a real time saver.? Just be sure to discharge any caps before testing!? You should be able to find one in the $25 range.? Available anywhere cheap China electronics are sold.? I added a few precision components to my kit so I can test calibration if in doubt.? It is one of the most versatile tools I own.? You can watch Youtube videos to see if it looks like something you would find helpful.? I don’t own an LCR meter and this adds that functionality to my lab with some limitations of course.
