PMDX-412 SmartBOB-MiniUSB announcement

The new PMDX-412 SmartBOB-MiniUSB motion controller for Mach4 is now shipping.

For details see:

This new controller offers the simplest, lowest cost way to create a Mach4
machine controller.

It provides the controller, pulse engine, breakout board, and plug-in terminal
strips. External breakout boards or terminal strips are not needed.

It can self mount directly to the wall of your control enclosure and includes
a dress panel for the outside of the enclosure.

The I/O available is equivalent to one parallel port and includes 4 axis step
and direction outputs, 4 logic level output signals, and 5 input signals including
the E-Stop function.

The output signals can be used with our PMDX-104 relay board or with
solid state relays.

The inputs accept mechanical switches, NPN sensors, or 5 volt logic signals.

PNP sensors can be used by adding our PMDX-105 board.

VFD spindle inverters can be controlled by adding our PMDX-407 board.

Stay tuned for more SmartBOB products in the future.

CNC Workshop registration discounted, June 8th in Detroit area.

The Workshop will run from Wednesday June the 8th until Saturday
the 11th of June at the facilities of Tech Shop in Allen Park, MI.

The cost of registration has been reduced to $100 for the full event.

There is an expanded schedule of useful seminars and there are more
vendors coming this year. Also hoping for more hobby (non-vendor)
exhibitors this year.

Saturday only access is free including an indoor swap meet. There
are no seminars on Saturday, but the vendors will be on hand.

See you there.

The Dell OptiPlex 360 comes with 2GB memory as the standard install. Here
are the specs:

b-160-gb-4643659/specs/

I would contact your vendor and ask them for the rest of the memory.

Also, if it is running Windows XP, do not connect to the internet - XP is no
longer supported by MSFT and there is malware that can infect the system
without your being aware of it. Running an anti-virus program does absolutly
zero good defending against this.

Saying you need a computer....there is more involved than
just that. I bought a dell360 with a 256mb, os 32 bit and
parallel port. But it seems that i need a 512mb video card
for 3d model and large g code files. And to run darwin for
mach4 i need it. Help.... getting a video card for the
dell may not be possible.

No. Fusion is Windows and Mac only. I do have it running on a Windows 10 virtual machine on my linux box.

Programmes such as FreeCAD or Fusion-360 (was a freee download) for the drawings and dxf2gcode to convert them.

Re: Getting Started

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have one of the Chinese 6040 routers, among other cnc machines. It is a lot of value for the money. I doubt you could build a comparable machine for less money.

It will even cut aluminum. If you opt for one of these from another seller, make sure you get the fully supported linear rails on the long axis. Some just have round rods. This is a complete machine in one box, with some assembly required. You provide a computer, and a bucket for the water cooled spindle. You will need a mach3 license, as it comes with a demo version.

There are others with USB connectivity and they work fine. USB for CNC has come a long way in a short time.

As to CAD/CAM, it's hard to beat Fusion 360. A solid modeling program with integrated tool path generation. It even has a post processor for Mach3. And it's free for hobbyists. Only $300 year for businesses that make over $100k per year. Plenty of tutorials on you tube to get you up to speed.

Re: Getting Started

Can't help with the specifics of the router/engraver but this is what I have. It's only a "menu" and there are lots of other menus to try!
CNC Machine: built from a Taig CNC ready mill
Mach 3 using a parallel port connection
Controller: Gecko 540 to run the motors
CAM program to set speeds, etc. and create Gcode
Power supply
Cabinet to hold the Gecko and power supply

If you can do your own Gcode, you may not need a CAM program. I am cutting clock wheels on the Taig but have done engraving: a 4 inch brass clock dial and finishing a partially complete equatorial sundial. CamBam can handle engraving.

Mach 4, as I understand it, does not require a parallel port but does require additional electronics. Mach 4 is still on my "to-do list."

You'll need some wire and bits and pieces of electronics stuff. I had to go to shielded cables some years ago to run from the controller to the motors.

Each part of a system requires a learning curve but if you have mastered CAD, you have completed the hardest one of the curves.

Bridgeport Series II with Gecko Servos for sale

After years of enjoyment the time has come where I need to find a new home for Bridgette. This is a Bridgeport Series II machine (about 35% bigger than what you think of as a Bridgeport) with Gecko step and direction servo drives and DC servo motors. The machine weighs in the 4000 - 5000 lbs range and is fully functional. It is set up to run on 220-240 single phase AC. The 3 phase spindle motor is driven by a VFD and all the drive electronics run from a good old fashion transformer, bridge rectifier, and filter capacitor power supply.

Ball screws that are in like new shape on all 3 axes and a built in lubricator system that I have operated manually, but will run automatically if you hook it up to power. All the tooling I have for it (end mill holders, drill chuck, collet chuck and collets) goes with the machine.

It is located in Englewood Colorado and requires a rigger to move it unless you are a lot more brave than I am. It has to be out of the building by May 20th 2016 as I am also selling the building.

Contact me off list to discuss any additional details or to make an offer.

Thanks,

Tim G
