Millwizard software

Has anyone used the Millwizard 3d software from Delcam? The demo
version seems really easy to use, but would like to know if the full
version is worth the 250.00. Thanks! Rick

Re: Firsthand Defiance experience

Marcus & Eva

Hi Kevin:
I've got a Defiance VTX-1 with the old Bridgeport DX 32 control (before
they put on the fancy Creative Evolution control)
Here's my findings:
Pretty lightly built little mill, but still capable of milling A2 toolsteel
at 60 Rockwell if you don't push it too hard.
Great mill for prototyping in plastic.
Some fairly sloppy assembly...mine came with the head out-of-square 0.007"
in 6", the tee slots are not parallel to the X axis movement so you can't
fixture to them, the table's a hunk of hot rolled mild steel that's been
surface ground and isn't perfectly flat.
The machine's so light that high speed machining is impractical...anything
above 80 inches a minute or so on a tiny part and the inertia of the table
reversal makes the machine hop across the floor.
That makes the Creative Evolution control a bit of a waste...so the 40 grand
for the new machine is way overpriced.
Mine was $15,000.00 USD in 1999 (it was a repo from 1997)
Defiance went buns up too, so if you get one...you're on your own!!!
Hope this helps
Cheers

Marcus

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Best benchtop 3D CNC milling machine

I'm looking to buy any used benchtop high speed cnc milling machine.
Main application would be to machine pastic and aluminium prototypes
but machining steel inserts would be a bonus. If someone got any
recomendation for best resource to find the used cnc machines and
which one is the best for that sort of work. of course budget is the
main issue. I looked Roland MDX-650 and VTX mill from defiance any
comments on these machines or if anyone selling these machines please
contact me. Thanks in advance.

Re: Possible OT vacuum chuck for CNC?

dodge1320

Hi Mark. I have a small cnc that I use for light machining and
engraving. It was a real pain to use clamps or double sided tape. I
made a simple vacuum plate out of aluminum and it works quite well.
I just posted the pictures on the photo page in the Rick-o-matic
folder. It's about 6x7 inches (my cnc has 4x6 travel) but could be
made up to any size. Mine is 3/8" thick, but should have been more
like 1/2" so I could have drilled larger cross holes! I originally
started with just the small holes to hold the work down, but that
didn't work. Then I generated a diameter for O rings, leaving .005
of the o ring sticking out. That didn't work either... Took out the
o rings and cut a cross from the hole to the o ring groove about .005
deep. Works great!
My Vacuum source is a vacuum pump going to a old freon tank (for -
volume) and a hobbs switch to turn the pump off when it reaches -25"
of vacuum. You will also see some dowel pin holes in the corner for
quick alignment. The lines are .5 apart just as a reference. I duct
tape (use #46879 of the duct tape manual!!!)the holes that are not
covered by your stock. Hope this helps! Rick

Re: Pin removal, Amphenol plug????

Doug,
From what I remember, and a look at a couple of
catalogs, the insert is held in by a snap ring on the
back side of the connector. But you will have to remove
the wires from the connector pins as there is a button
that hold the pins in. I had to replace on a machine one
time, it was a 50+ pin connector out on the end of the
carriage, lots of fun.
Here is the Allied Electronics page that has the
connector on.

Good luck

Hello Group,

Amphenol plug #20-33P....

The right angle fitting on the cable of my mill's Haas 4th axis head
broke. It's a 3/8" armored cable. I have to remove the wires from
the plug connector on the opposite end of the cable, pull the wires
back through and replace the right angle fitting.

I don't see how the pins are pushed out of the Amphenol connector.
Or maybe the connector body comes apart somehow to allow the pin
removal. Anyhow, it's not obvious. It's an 11 pin connector.

I checked Amphenol's website to look for a breakdown of my
connector. Their search function didn't seem to recognize the part
number, they may have a new numbering system since nothing appeared
close to my number series.

Anyone have an idea how to get these pins out of the connector body??

thanks,

Doug

Re: One direction Gecko????

Joe,

Short the direction line to your PC ground while the motor is
turning. Do this by disconnecting the direction line from your port
and touch it to your port ground line. If the drive is good, the
direction must change then.

If it doesn't, give me a call at 1-714-771-1662 Monday and I will
either repair or replace the drive for free. I don't want anyone to
be dissatisfied with our stuff.

Ive tried hooking it up in place of the other 2 geckos that I have,
connecting it to different motors, but I still cant get it to turn
any of them more than one direction, CCW.
I initially thought it was the motor, but It wasnt.
I then thought it might be the parallel port pinout from my
breakout
board, after switching all of the pins around to other drivers(both
hardware wise and software) I discovered that it wasnt.
Then I thought, well maybe I had wired it up wrong some how, so I
took apart and reassembled everything about 10 times and still got
the same results no matter what pin the step/dir' were running off
of.
I now am pretty sure it is defective. And when I asked Lloyd for
help figuring this thing out, all he could say was either it should
work or it doesnt. And I should ask someone else for troubleshooting.

He then suggested me to query the list and see what I can come up
with. Or contact Mariss and ask him.

Anybody ever hear of this happening with a Gecko G201?

It would be great if someone could maybe suggest something for me
to
check, and possibly make this thing work the way it was designed to.
If not, then I guess I got the old Ebay screw job, and am stuck
with
a driver that only goes one way, because Lloyd has no intention of
replacing it or the money I paid for it.

Anybody ever hear of this happening with a Gecko G201?
Any ideas??

Thanks in advance

Re: One direction Gecko????

Hi Joe
Being [I think] the world record holder of blown Geckos I own at
last count 3 of em that exhibit this. In each case after installing
them I saw a very small spark first time I powered up. Been meaning to
send in for "examination" but keep forgetting.

It is something on the logic side so probably repairable,
Good Luck

Matt, I have not used EMC for several years now so I was surprised to

Dan
I'm not doing it yet. First I've got to finish retrofitting the lathe with a spindle encoder (probably just a few pulses/rev). Then I need to get the software to cooperate. It's been a while since a major feature has been added to the EMC, and even longer since I've contributed anything worthwhile, so it seems a good goal to aim for. Plus, I've got a Hardinge HNC I need to retrofit and that has to have threading, so it's got to be done.
Well, I think maybe the trick is to set that axis of whatever encoder counter you are using to reset
to zero on the index pulse. That way, the counter doesn't need to know the number of counts/rev.
(The software does need to know, of course.)

I think the 7166 chip can do this, but I know my FPGA counters have this option.

NAMES get together

Matt:

It's pretty early to tell for sure, but I'll probably be there
again in 2003.

Since it's noisy and hard to find people at the show, a CNC pow-wow
is an excellent idea, perhaps on one of the evenings. I was a bit
frustrated with how difficult it was to socialize at the NAMES 2002;
and there were a few folks I would have really liked to chat more
with.

If someone lives near the site and is willing to host, I'd say a
good CCED house party would fit the bill.

Re: query - 2HP PM DC motor controller - pointers please

Jan Kok wrote

How does one get 90VDC from 110VAC? By using a switching power
supply, or
PWM? (In which case there is nothing magic about 90V, you could get any
amount of DC up to sqrt(2) * 110V minus a few volts for various losses.)

The peak volatge of a 120 V line is actually 167 Volts. The effective heating voltage
a resistor would see is 120 V, that is called the RMS, or Root-Mean-Square, voltage.
it would be a good safety feature to use an isolation or step-down transformer, but you
don't have to. A number of spindle drives are direct coupled.

Since every other aspect of this subject has been covered through and through by now, I guess the only thing I can add is that I'm doing OK! Actually, I've been working on some stuff I'd like to exhibit at NAMES this year. I'm CNCing another Sherline mill (5400) and a lathe (4400), and I'm really hoping to demonstrate single point threading on the lathe and rigid tapping on the mill using the EMC. Wish me luck... ;)

Well, I'm mostly planning on it, again. Hopefully without any absolute-last-minute software/hardware
development. I have some pieces of an XY table, so I might have a stepper-driven mini machine there.

Is there any software development in the area of lathe threading and EMC? I'm certainly interested,
as I want to CNC my behemoth lathe sometime.

Help with Cadem's NCnet lite download

I have downloaded the "English" version of Cadem's DNC freeware
program NCnet Lite and get it in another lanquage. I have sent them
an e-mail, but need to download some programs from my CNC lathe this
weekend. Does anyone know of another place to download or have a
copy they could send me?

Thanks
