Re: C14 + G11 for CCD work?

But even then you need very still wind conditions. I have not had good results at longer focal lengths. Also, I have heard comments that the stepper motors introduce minute vibrations that reduce CCD resolution. Ken |

Hartman Mask Analysis
I checked the archieves here and at SBIG on this but didn't find
anything. Is anyone using this SBIG software? I tried it sucessfully with a 24 hole mask on a C14 for the first time this weekend. Results were: .22 waves @ 0 .16 waves @ 45 .23 waves @ 90 .28 waves @ 135 Exposures were 10 seconds on a 2nd mag star, seeing was 5-7. Also, the point of best focus gave an image size of .4-.9 arc seconds, with a total size of 1.5-2.0 arc seconds. I don't know if all this is good or bad for a C14. Any comments very much appreciated. Re: New C-14 comments
Hi Scott, Thank you for this information. This was something I was not aware of.
Many years ago (1985) I bought, and owned a Super C-8 Plus, and it was a Black tube, with Black Forks/Drive Base. It was attractive, but I did notice that black (Just like a black car) shows every little mark, sleek, and minor imperfection. I always found myself glazing, and waxing the tube to keep it as nice as I could! :-) I seem to get the impression that Celestron is looking for a new image lately, and since they are now owned by Tasco, perhaps the "New Hot Thing" in Japan is Grey Tubes. The Japanese have a hell of a lot of influence when it comes to anything "Optics". What a god-aweful color! I have written to Celestron voicing my dislike, and may even call them too. Perhaps if more folks would get on the band-wagon, they possibly may be persuaded to either return to Black, or perhaps a White OTA. Mark |

I haven't seen a C8 in that color but was told that Celestron is moving to it for all of their OTAs except for the Nexstars. Scott |

Mark,
I don't object the handles that much. My only concerns would be if thesehandles >would become loose in the future. Changing colors is something I'd consider having done by a professionalpaint >shop, but this really doesn't tickle me much doing this to a brand new OTA out of >the box. I agree, especially as such a paint job implies removing all optics and the front and aft castings from the tube itself. I had the opportunity to buy a white painted C-14 and this one was fully disassembled for painting in a pro paint shop. This sale did not work out, so now I have a black one. Re: New C-14 comments
Hi Geert, As far as a know, no, the C-14 OTA is still aluminum at present.
I have heard some rumor about a possible Carbon-Fiber C-14, and many have already said this would be a mistake. I don't object the handles that much. My only concerns would be if these handles would become loose in the future. No doubt a removal of the primary mirror would be in order to either tighten them, or eliminate them altogether. New C-14 comments
Hi, Within the last 2 weeks, I have corresponded with a couple of owners of the new C-14, and am a bit dismayed about a couple of items they have changed.
One is the Tube Color Grey? Why the hell did they change the color from Black to Grey? I assume that no other OTA in the line-up changed color. The rest are still Black. I'd really wish Celestron would change their OTA's to white, or perhaps maybe offer a choice? I think with a White Tube, with Black front, and rear cell, that the scope would look much better, and have a more "Professional" Appearance. Also, the addition of the Tube Handles. In Bruce's Pics, I see 2 handles on the rear Cell. In Nov. Astronomy Mag., I only see one handle pictured on a C-14 they advertise, and it also looks quite Black in color to me too? With more, and more folks using these C-14's on full-blown GOTO Mounts, who really needs rear Handles to move the scope? I'm sure they're not suitable for picking the scope up to help with mounting the OTA to a mount. It would be interesting to have a poll, to find out who really likes what they have done with the new C-14. I personally do not. Sure, I guess a person could strip an OTA once recieved, and do what he/she likes with it (Paint it, and/or remove handles, but I'm sure this would not benefit the resale value if one should wish to sell in the future. 开云体育Hi,
?
I've seen a grey carbon fibre tube of a C-11 and I
didn't really like the colour, but then it doesn't matter much.? Is the new
C-14 grey tube in carbon fibre as well???
?
As for the handles, I've got two on my
C-14?and find those very useful even with a semi-GoTo mount.? But who
needs GoTo to point the scope to the Moon and planets? I just grab those handles
and use manpower to point the scope to these objects or reference stars for the
GoTo controller!
?
Best regards,

Re: [C14] C-14 secondary
Geert Vandenbulcke
开云体育Hi,
?
Can anyone tell me how the secondary is mounted in
the C-14, more precisely is the secondary held firm?by the middle screw,
while the three collimation screws are just pushing against the secondary??
Is there "something" between the collimation screws and the secondary mirror
itself?
?

Re: [C14] Re: C-14, got it.

开云体育Hi Mark,
?
The mount was made in Germany by Mr Eckhard
Alt.? He made three types : the Alt 5, 6 and 7.? Earlier types had a
tangent arm declination adjustment, the later types called Alt AD5/6/7 have worm
gears on both axis.? Mine is an Alt AD7.? Mr Alt stopped making these
mounts about a year ago.? The axes are 70 mm diameter, worm gear on RA is
290 mm D, worm gear in DEC is 160 mm D.? Stepper motors are used,
originally with a drivecorrector supplied with the mount, but I have replaced
mine with a FS2 microstepping GoTo controller (see ?).
?
The tube rings with two sliding counterweights each
side came with the tube.? I fastened these to a dovetail that matches the
AD7.? It is not intended to be "portable".
?
I just spent a few hours in the observatory this
morning, seeiing was good (about 7/10 where 10 is perfect).? Many details
with color?on Jupiter were visible, Jovian satellites nice disks?and
Saturn was like a Hubble Space telescope picture!
?
Best regards,
?
