Re: [C14] Re: Tube Stiffeners

My dovetail is OK, I guess, but I've thought about getting the
Losmandy. Sometimes after tightening my screws, I find that I can go
back and tighten them further, like the dovetail flexed or
something. Why did you get the Losmandy and how much better is it;
what mount do you use it on? Thanks.
I purchased the Losmandy dovetail so that I would have somewhere to
insert shims needed to make the OTA orthogonal with the mount. I'll
be getting another dovetail for the topside so that I can mount aother
equipment on top of the OTA. I'm using a Paramount GT-1100S.

Ah yes, I kmow of them. So those are tube stiffeners. Thanks for
your
description. One of those tube stiffeners fell off once while I was
replacing the stock dovetail with a Losmandy dovetail. I had to
reach
through the secondary opening in the corrector to retreive it and
put
it back in place. I'd better take a look at mine to see if they're
shedding.

Re: Tube Stiffeners

The tube stiffeners are the small rectangular pieces attached, two in
front, two in the rear. If you look into your corrector, at 12
o'clock and six are the front ones, with identical ones in back.
they are near where the dovetail attaches on bottom, and (if used) a
piggyback mount would on top. They are about a quarter inch wide and
a couple inches long. No, my tube is the standard tube as with all C-
14's. The stiffeners add strength in these key areas. Had yours
done what mine did, you would know all about them. ;-)

Tube stiffeners? What is a tube stiffener? Has the design of the
C-
14 changed since a year ago? What's your tube made of, aluminum or
carbon fibre? Unless I'm missing something, my one year old C-14
with an aluminum tube doesn't appear to have any tube stiffeners.

Tube Stiffeners

Hi Folks,

I bought a C14 in February and shortly after (2-3 months), the tube
stiffeners shed their dark coating (becoming quite white) and
deposited a white powder all over the inside of the tube. I had to
send it back to get factory serviced. They fixed the problem, but
claim it was a first.

Has anyone else had this happen or know what might have been the
cause?

Ah, I see that yahoo hides e-mail addresses. Don Clement's e-mail
address is donald_clement at yahoo dot com. I'll ask Don to please

Re: [C14] opening a c14

Anyway I have heard that The C14 is glue'ed at the rear cell.
No, the tube is not glued to the rear cell. It's press fit. The
tube is attached with several screws with nuts. The nuts are lock-
tighted. (However, the mirror is attached to the mirror mount with
RTV.)

Don Clement (donald_clement@...) recently disassembled my C-14
in preparation to retrofit it with his patented Clement Compliant
Focuser (CCF), a zero-image shift focuser and mirror mount. Don has
also created a computer model of the C-14 OTA.

BTW, the benefits of the CCF are:

1. Zero image shift focusing.
2. Elimination of mirror flop.
3. Primary mirror collimation screws.

I'd suggest you contact Don for everything you could want to know
about disassembly of a C-14.

Hi,
Try to ask Thomas M Bisque at: Sotftware Bisque:

he wrote about how to fix the Primar Mirror on a c14:
You can find it on: SoftBisqUser@...

The messages is found under: C14 "Lock Down"

Anyway I have heard that The C14 is glue'ed at the rear cell.

This is caused by the mirror actually shifting while it moves on the
focus rack. It's corrected by any of the several after market
focusers available. See jimsmobile.com for a start....
