Re: C-14, got it.

Hi Geert, Very nice set-up indeed!

What make mount is this again? I don't think I've ever heard of this one!. Tell us a bit about it please?

From what I can see in the pic, your set-up uses tube rings, instead of what most people I see use, the Losmandy Dovetail Plate. Mark

C-14, got it.

Hello,

after a few months of negotiation with the former owner and thinking,
I got the second-hand C-14. It checks out good mechanically and
optically as far as I can see after just a few nights use and
startesting. You can see a picture in the Photos section in my
album. The OTA is a black one, about 6 years old. I think I'm gonna
like this telescope!

Clear Skies,

Re: Pics of the Newer C-14 Rear focus mecanic on the mirror..?

Hi bruce,
Very nice pictures!

Do you got any pictures the c-14 rear focus gear-mecanick, so it
possible to see how it works close to the back of the mirrow..?
It would be nice, if you could download here too.

assembly. I plan to post some illustrations of the C14 workings on a

Thanks Robert,
?
The C14 (OTA only) would be mounted on a permanent mount, so no problem with assembly/disassembly.? The optical quality is under investigation, I'll know more in a few days, weather allowing.? Thanks for your input.

Hello Geert,
Welcome to the C14 group! The biggest concern of any C14 is optical quality! If you have the chance to check out the optics before buying...do so! I have seen more good 14's than bad, just be careful! The second concern is due to the weight and setup time for this wonderful beast. Make sure you want to go thru the trouble of setting up and taking down each time. I myself observe at least 20 times per month and I have to setup and break down each time due to I have no observatory.
I believe this is the greatest sct due to it's size and yes....one person of average health can put the "basic" visual scope together within 10 to 15 minutes. What I can see with this scope in Las Vegas with deep sky objects is astounding compared to smaller sct's or even larger dobsonians! If you decide on this one or another C14,I know you will have fun with it. ????????????Clear Skies!

Hello,

I may acquire a second hand C14 and that is why I joined this group.
I would welcome advice, experience (good or bad) and any other
practical info you would like to share about this big SCT.

Thanks,

Geert

For planetary I use a Televue 2.4x powermate. That's about all the

How did you attach the handle to the front? Just screwed it into existing

Also, though we have a full aperture Thousand Oaks solar filter, the
F-ration is too short for decent solar or even planetary work. What have you
folks done as far as creating stops to increase the F ratio?

Re: [C14] remote operation

Balancing the tube on the paramount. The RA axis is no problem thanks to the
counterweights on the other end. What have people done as far as adding
counterweights to the tube itself to balance out the
camera/filterwheel/reducer, etc. on the other end? I have the tube slid as
far forward as possible in the mounting rings, and it's still way
overbalanced on the rear end.
Good question! I don't use tube rings. I have mine on a Losmandy dovetail.
I have the OTA pretty far forward on the dovetail. Hanging off the corrector
end of the dovetail I have placed a Losmandy dovetail weight set. At ten
pounds, it's still not enough. I'm looking for ideas here as well.

Also, what are people using for pointers/guidescopes, and how do you have
them mounted?
As a "finder scope" I have an Orion Short tube 80 (80mm f/5 refractor) with
a PC-23 video camera hanging off the back. I obtained the ST80 used for $100.
A finder scope doesn't need fine optics.

I agree. The fellow who built the observatory I now direct built it on the
foundation of remote unattended operation, but even watching him from a
distance over the last few years, it was clear that he wasn't going to
achieve that goal. My objective for the current school year is to get the
facility tweaked and running as much as possible on a turnkey status, and
get students and teachers out there using it.

You're not alone. :-)

I'm here and will be asking for some advice soon. I am the new director of
the Madison Metropolitan School District's observatory. We have a CM-1400 on
a Bisque Paramount 1100 in a Prodome. SBIG ST7 CCD and CFW-8. It was
originally designed to be used remotely from the internet. There are some
problems (understatement) with that type of operation and I'm strongly
leaning toward exclusive on-site use until I have a much better
understanding of all the hardware/software issues in remote use.

I'm a long-time amateur astronomer who was lucky enough to already work for
the school district (a school psychologist, believe it or not), so I got the
nod when the previous director (and observatory founder) decided to go back
to the classroom.

I'll post more soon. I hope you guys don't mind my leaning heavily on your

After I purchased the Losmandy dovetail I didn't get a chance to do any
shimming before...

Unfortunately, I now don't have my C-14 in my posession at this time.
It's been out of my hands for almost three months now. Another
member of this mailing list has it. I'd very much like to get it
back too. By this time now, I'm honestly and sincerely feeling
quite frustrated. I hope I get my scope back soon. It's a private
matter though, so other than mentioning the above, I won't go into
the details.

I purchased the Losmandy dovetail so that I would have somewhere to

be getting another dovetail for the topside so that I can mount
