Now I see that what I interpreted as a band of black paint is simply
excessive grime. Interesting to see how extensive such grime can be even on
the roof areas that are in front of the exhaust and fans.

Sorry -- can you provide a specific link. My searching did not uncover any SD40's with a black roof and black upper band.

Has CPKC announced a rebuild program for 2023? I ask because five dead 8500 series GE AC4400CWs were spotted at Nahant Yd.
In Davenport, IA on the Engine House track. Seeing five GEs there is not unusual, but seeing all five from the same number series is.
The 8500 series provided the cores for the 8200 series rebuilds so far.
