Re: Digest Number 332
BC Rail King
Hello,
The 2816 is slated for a June departure from the BC Rail shop in North Vancouver. This is the deadline set by the employees, not the managment at either RR. Second, the only reason the steam shop at N.Van has problems is because of lack of funding. Al Brodfoot should be regonized for his hard work! The engine has gotten alot more done on it than Mr.Smuin has said. The have stripped it, cleaned it (harder than one may think) worked on there own engines at the same time, rebuilt parts of it, and so on........ But in the end Mr. Smuin is correct, people will work double over time to get that thing out by May. Dane N. BCon, BC Rail fannatic PS-I vollunteered on the Hudson last summer, just alittle vent for me. Message: 11______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at |

We on the Laggan are waiting with baited breath for the 2816 as it
will be our star attraction this summer running the Golden Triangle and charter trips. When it is ready, we railfans want a double header trip from North Van to Calgary with the 2816 and the 2860. Now that would be a sight. sic transit gloria mundi! So far, the only magic I've seen at BC Rail is the foreman's unerring ability to show up at all the wrong moments. As for a BC Rail blitz, about the closest I've seen to one of those involved something organized by the United Way. Unless something has changed very drastically from what I last heard on pretty good authority, I seriously doubt we are going to see 2816 any time much before summer. (If then.) will supposedly be a Chalenger tender from a Binghamton steam engine..... Rumours that Rob Ritchie has bought a home in Montreal.....like there might be a change at the HELM soon...wonder how his 2816 project will survive if he gets boot out ? I guess shareholders not happy with CP's stock performance ? |

CPR Builds on Canada-Mexico Trade Growth
CALGARY, March 28 /CNW/ - Canadian Pacific Railway's recent launch of a new suite of seamless joint-line rail services across North America's three free-trade countries has generated significant growth in Mexican traffic, leading CPR to next month open its first permanent office in Mexico. CPR's traffic to and from Mexico took a 25-per-cent jump in 1999, much of it coming from a new NAFTA-targeted rail service brand called CPR-MEX, which was launched in November 1999. CPR-MEX links CPR with three of Mexico's recently privatized railways and Union Pacific Railroad in the U.S. to move virtually any product -- from automobiles and auto parts, to grain, steel and beer -- to and from anywhere in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. ``The potential for growth in the Mexican market is tremendous,'' said Robert Ritchie, President and Chief Executive Officer of CPR. ``Not only is Canada-Mexico trade growing, but only about four per cent of the existing traffic currently moves by rail. By joining forces with our U.S. and Mexican railway partners, we can offer unrivaled access to North America's major markets. ``Our new office in Mexico City will provide local expertise and will further develop relationships with Mexican railways and shippers.'' The CPR-MEX suite of services includes bulk freight and intermodal ramp-to-ramp service, pre-arranged truck pickup and delivery in Mexico, direct access to all major Mexican border crossings, and port service for continent-to-continent trade. The three Mexican partners in the service are Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM), Ferrocarril Mexicano (FXE) and Ferrosur (FSRR). Union Pacific is CPR's preferred partner on the U.S. portion of the services. The joint-line services offer the shortest route between Mexico and Montreal, where Mexican goods can be moved by CPR directly into port and loaded on ships for Europe. CPR-MEX also offers the only direct service to and from New York City. Goods move across the continent under a simple one-price/one-bill contract, with shipment tracing on CPR's website and 24-hour customer service. Mexico-Canada trade was worth $9.1 billion in 1998, and has grown an average of 13 per cent each year since 1994. Mexico is now Canada's second-largest trading partner, behind the U.S. CPR's Mexico City office will be headed by Rosalind Wilson, Director of Business Development for Mexico. Ms. Wilson is a Mexican resident and has extensive experience working with Mexico's railways. ``Thanks to the North American Free Trade Agreement, doing business in Mexico is now a fact of life for many Canadian companies,'' said Ms. Wilson. ``We now make it easier for shippers to trade with Mexico by providing a seamless, one-price/one-bill service. The shipper deals with one railway only and benefits from significantly streamlined customs clearance.'' Mexican railways have undergone major modernization since they were privatized in the mid 1990s. Investment in infrastructure and equipment, new marketing practices and improved security measures have made Mexican railways more efficient and competitive than ever. CPR provides rail and intermodal freight transportation services coast to coast over a 14,400-mile network extending from Montreal to Vancouver, and throughout the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Commercial alliances with other carriers extend CPR's market reach beyond its own network. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓý ports on the east coasts of Canada and the U.S. and the Port of Vancouver, CPR links North America with European and Pacific Rim markets, moving large volumes of import and export goods across the continent. It is also a leading carrier in the intermodal industry with 24 terminals across Canada and the northern U.S. |

Full Text of Decision
30913 SERVICE DATE - MARCH 28, 2000 DO SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD DECISION STB Docket No. AB-57 (Sub-No. 46X) SOO LINE RAILROAD COMPANY--ABANDONMENT EXEMPTION--IN ST. PAUL, RAMSEY COUNTY, MN Decided: March 23, 2000 By decision served on April 20, 1999, the Board, under 49 U.S.C. 10502, exempted from the prior approval requirements of 49 U.S.C. 10903, the abandonment by Soo Line Railroad Company, doing business as Canadian Pacific Railway (Soo), of a .90???-mile line of railroad known as the St. Paul Terminal Trackage, extending from milepost 17.29??? (southeast of Jackson Street) to the end of the line at milepost 18.19??? (near I-35E North), in Ramsey County, MN, subject to an environmental condition and standard employee protective conditions. The exemption was scheduled to become effective on May 20, 1999, but a timely offer of financial assistance (OFA) under 49 U.S.C. 10904 and 49 CFR 1152.27, filed on April 30, 1999, postponed the effective date of the exemption authorizing the abandonment in order to permit the OFA process under 49 U.S.C. 10904 and 49 CFR 1152.27 to proceed. By decision served on September 20, 1999, the OFA process was terminated and a 90-day public use condition was imposed under 49 U.S.C. 10905 for acquisition of the right-of-way at the request of the Tri-Area Block Club (Tri-Area).(1) The condition required that Soo keep the right-of-way underlying the track, including bridges, trestles, culverts, and tunnels (but not track and track materials), intact for a period of 90 days until December 19, 1999, to enable any State or local government agency, or other interested person to negotiate the acquisition of the line for public use. At the requests of Tri-Area and the City of St. Paul, MN (the City), the public use condition was extended for an additional 90 days to March 18, 2000, by decision served on December 17, 1999. By letter filed on March 16, 2000, Tri-Area and the City jointly request a further extension of the public use condition. It is well settled that 180 days is the maximum period permitted by statute for a public use condition and that it may not be extended beyond that time period. See 49 U.S.C. 10905; 49 CFR 1152.28(b); and Rail Abandonments--Public Use Conditions--Revision, 8 I.C.C.2d 392, 395-98 (1992). Therefore, the requested extension must be denied. This decision will not significantly affect either the quality of the human environment or the conservation of energy resources. It is ordered: 1. The request to extend the public use condition is denied. 2. This decision is effective on its service date. By the Board, David M. Konschnik, Director, Office of Proceedings. Vernon A. From: "Andy McCullough" <mcculloughaa@...> What is the "Enterprise"? Is this the new Montreal/Toronto overnighttrains 50/51?Yes. I thought Park cars were in great demand.VIA has no shortage of Park cars. They do have a shortage of operable Skyline cars and of Manor and Chateau cars. The shortage of Skyline cars has meant that dining room cars have on occasion had to be substituted for Skylines on the Chaleur, for instance. The shortage of sleeping cars has led VIA to lease several from Amtrak, likely for use on the Hudson Bay. On the Montreal-Toronto overnight trains, a Park car can serve not only as a sleeping car but also as a lounge and as a food-preparation and serving area for breakfast in the morning. Park cars have been regularly operated on the overnight train since it began in January. Is it possible that REVELSTOKE PARK is one of the Park cars on its way tobe used on VIA train #15 Ocean between Montreal & Halifax?I'd guess it unlikely, but it is possible that a Park car from the Canadian could be deadheaded on a daytime train from Toronto to Montreal for maintenance. VIA now has only three heavy maintenance centres, in Vancouver (for the Canadian and the Skeena), Winnipeg (for the Hudson Bay), and Montreal (for everything else). The maintenance centres in Toronto and Halifax have been closed except for servicing and minor maintenance. Pat Scrimgeour, Toronto, qqjct@... |

I have heard people say that there's a shortage of Skylines, but a (small) abundance of Parks, but I'm just going from anecdotal memory here. Breakfast is offered in the Park car lounge or in your room, should you prefer. They can make coffee & stuff there in the Park's kitchenette. Isn't the Mimico Maintenance Mentre all but shut down too? Isn't most servicing done in Montreal?
