retired Southern SD35's....
Does anyone know if this is correct???? Mike

Here's a little clip (verbatim) from a previous CP Monthly Operating
Bulletin:

- - -
Subject: Dynamic Brake Factors - SOO SD40 Locomotives Repainted In CPR
Colours

The table in GOI Section 16, Item 7.1 b) states that Soo SD40/40-2
locomotives have 60,000 lbs retarding force (DB factor = 6) and that CP
SD40/40-2 locomotives have 45,000 lbs retarding force (DB factor - 4.5).
Confusion has surfaced because many Soo locomotives have been re-painted to
the standard CPR paint layout. While the appearance and initials have
changed, the locomotive number has stayed the same and the dynamic brake
capacity has stayed the same.
This means that all locomotives in the number series
- Soo 700, 6400 or 6600 or
- CP 700, 6400 or 6600
have 60,000 lbs retarding force (DB factor = 6)

Extended range dynamics was standard on the dash two line for that

To the best of my knowledge, CP units did not have extended range DB
(SD-40s). On the Dash two's, this feature is noted by the small
acess door on the DB blister located @ the front of the unit,
engineers side. CP's SD's have never had these.

The only units(SD40's/dash2's) that I know that are equipped with
this feature are the former QNS&L SD's and the former NS units.

I can remember that when the 5400's firsted arrived, there was a
bulletin advising that on these units the DB worked in a speed as low
a 3-5 mph ( if I remember correctly) For example, look at the DB
blister of a CSX SD40-2 to that of CP. CP units are missing the small
access door.

As for why CP would not by this feature: They are cheap.

It took a major, million dollar wreck out west before CP management
felt that it was wise to spend a million or so on a training program
for engineers for the new control stands and features of the new high
teck GE's & GM's.

Any employee who worked on the mainline before the use of FRED's can
tell you of the many options CP got for the crews. Cabs of engines
had the following....three crappy sits, a ice bucket for water and a
metal rack in the nose to hold the garage bag if you had to go to the
bathroom. Enjoy your 198 mile run...LOL

That 3084 looks real good in those colors!
Now let's hope that the staff at Ogden misplaced the red paint
and we can have a decent paint scheme again.
*
Also, I see that the number 'fonts' are correct as compared to the 'F's.
Finally, take note of the class lights. They are still intact! That's
amazing.
The CP was removing them like a disease for a short while, and I'm
surprised that these ones remain. That's fine by me.
..hope someone has a set of flags too.

Peter Jobe

I would say that the 1972 "EMD built" DRF-30j class 5629 - 5658 had strobes
at one time or another.

5658 had one in 1985, 5654 had one when she was painted STLH in 1996.
single amber strobe light centered on front of cab roof, just above the bell

UP units that were made CP leaders were in the low 3400's, 3414 for sure.

A number of years ago, CP & UP enter into a run through(sp?)

At that time, UP equipped a group of units in the pool with CP ditch
lights, and CP equipped a group of units with UP strobe lights.

Can anyone confirm the details of this run through agreement, and how
many CP units were equipped with the strobe lights. What make and
model of strobe was applied.

Thanks THO.

Just using CP equipment tracing system. It's very fast if you know all these
train numbers. When I do a search, I only look the train # column for all
the trains coming in or out of Smiths Falls, Ont.. So, you have to look for
any departure train of Montreal,(431, 471, 481, 489,491 501,509, 535..919,
923, .etc.) departure from Toronto (500,502,..902, 926...738 etc)) to
Montreal and also any departure from North Bay, Ont,(432, 446, 448,450,
472,482,542, etc...) plus any trains at Smiths Falls, Ont.

It won't take me more then 10-12 minutes to trace down all the trains
movement in the morning at the Falls....

How do you trace a train like that? Is it done in equipment tracing?

Phil:

I'll bet that you and most of the other boys that have been on the
railroad for a good number of years will agree with me that we've
recently started to see major league changes in management attitudes.

When it became official that the 2816 was to be rebuilt and put back
into excursion service, that thundering drumroll everybody heard, was
not the racing heartbeats of a trillion railfans, but rather the
collective roar caused by the bones of hundreds of old CPR officials
turning over in their graves at the thought of spending more than 5
cents cash on something so perfectly "frivolous". (The amount of cash
caused some localized earthquakes in senior graveyards!!) :>)

Truly, the "new guard" in senior management is a completely different
critter than his predecessor. Half on 'em wouldn't know a wheelset from
a mindset, but at least if you can make a good business case, they'll
take a serious look at it - unlike the old crowd.

extended range DB.

The CPR Dash 2's do have the same DB blister as extended
range, however the louvers for cooling the grids to not extend
as far forward on the blister as on extended range DB units.
This was a factory option, and a visual way of identifying
non extended range DB equipped SD40-2's.

The "old guard" at CPR were more concerned with thrift than
effective train handling and fuel conservation.

When I worked in Kamloops, we were told the the lights were strictly a
publicity stunt to draw attention to the train. I saw them working a
number of times and at some distance, if there wasn't too much other
light pollution, they were certainly effective in letting you know where
the train was, even if you couldn't actually see the train.

What is the true story behind their application? I have hear of three

I kind of wondered about this. I would have sworn that when I was in
the shop staff at Kamloops that the SD40s did not have extended range
DB. Seems to me in DB, they would only motor up as far as throttle 4
and that was it.
