New "Canadian-Passenger-Rail" list at OneList

Christian Base

Hi all,

I have just created the "Canadian-Passenger-Rail" list at OneList:

This list is a place to discuss all aspects of past, present, and future
passenger rail travel in Canada. This includes all national, regional,
commuter, and tourist rail carriers. Examples include VIA Rail, the
passenger services of Algoma (Wisconsin) Central, Ontario Northland, or BC
Rail, GO Transit, West Coast Express, Rocky Mountaineer Railtours, and
South Simcoe Railway. Others not mentioned here are of course welcome.

Discussions regarding freight movements unrelated to passenger rail should
be posted elsewhere. I suggest the Canadian-Railways list, the C-P-R
list, or the C-N-R list for these topics.

This list will have moderated membership for the purposes of limiting
individuals who violate the guidelines of this list.

Please avoid cross posting to other lists.

Polls are welcome however, please discuss with the list moderator.

Files may be uploades to the files section at

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the moderator at
cbase@....

Please feel welcome!
Christian.

Re: Commuter Actions in Cities

Greetings

I grew up on the Montreal Lakeshore CPR commuter line (plus CNR Lakeshore
service too for the first few years)and can of course easily confirm that
the CP line was there many, many years before the Toronto GO services.

As I have never had an original thought of my own, I?ll plagiarize from
?CANADIAN PACIFIC?s MONTREAL LAKESHORE COMMUTER SERVICES (Volume One)? by
Ronald S. Ritchie, Published by BRMNA in Calgary.

?In 1884 . . . the fledgling Canadian Pacific . . . inaugurated services
between Montreal as far west as Vaudreuil. By the early 1020's . . . the
idea of year-round residence outside the city was
beginning to take hold. At its peak . . . just before WW2, passengers had a
choice of ten suburban trains in each direction . . . (+) . . . plus another
7 long distance trains . . .?

The trains (about 13 a day) continue today, of course, operated by ?AGENCE
METROPOLITAINE DE TRANSPORT? and in 1999 were still using some 1954/55
vintage ex-CPR FP7A?s (nee-CPR 4040 + 4070 - 4075).

I have some questions with regards to commuter operations past and
present.

I know that CP operated its own commuter rail in Montreal, but did
it ever do so before GO Transit started in Toronto?

What appears to be sheet metal on the windows of the CP "B" units
(ie; SD40-2 #5767) is actually 1/2" plywood fitted into the window
frames.

I was just reviewing the latest issue of RAIL CANADA vol. 3 and I noticed
that there is a shot of 4570 with it's windows covered with sheet metal
similar to 5767 etc, and the high nose ex-NS, 5400's. How many more units
were done like this? Or was this the only Big Alco done up like this?

Was on a rare jaunt along the CP tracks on the south side of Vancouver
today and noted CP Switcher an ??SW? #1237 and a caboose on a siding!
Paint on the loco looked like new! This is on the Marpole branch! I
always thought they brought the engines down from New West with the
loads did the switching and then headed back.

The only other city I can think of for relatively recent times would be on
the Toronto line towards Peterboro. These trains could be _used_ for
commuting, but were not strictly set up for commuter service.
Before the fifties for possible other cities, well there Im in the dark.

CAR Reporting Marks

Ross Harrison

The CAR did not have its own reporting marks.

The CAR was set up as a marketing arm, not an operating subsidiary,
like the StL&H, therefore it never had its own reporting marks
registered in UMLER.

3 8000s were stencilled CAR, but all carried lettering stating they

Commuter Actions in Cities

Jason Monk

Greetings all,

I have some questions with regards to commuter operations past and
present.
I know that CP operated its own commuter rail in Montreal, but did
it ever do so before GO Transit started in Toronto? And what about in
other cities, like Vancouver and Calgary and such?
I ask because I want some background reference for the commuter
operations on my layout.

Thanks all

Jason

Tyvan Sub Question

Bruce Dixon

Recently someone told me that the CP Tyvan Sub between
Regina and Stoughton had been featured in an issue of
National Geographic as being the longest stretch of
straight track in North America. Can anyone on the
list confirm this?

Thanks

Bruce

I got the same thing to, i downloaded the fix and it said i did not have it,
yet someone i was e mailing earlier asked what was with the code i sent
them.....

And 2 more trians crashed today on the chalk river sub, one 5600 ran out of
water and the next eastbound got peged at the scanner at m28.5. so that
brings our chalk river sub parking lot to 5 trains downed in the last 24
hours inlcuding 2 crews that hit the 12 hour limit, and the one last night
who's EOT did not arm. And apparenetly there were more problems in smith's
falls as well.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure if you just got the characters your e-mail proggie didn't
convert it. And I haven't gotten it through this list (I would have, just like
the other one). You should be OK, but you might want to get the Pretty Park
Cleaner from this site:

Run it and it will remove all traces from your machine. BTW, this %%##@!**!
thing came to me off the railswest list on the onelist server.

Good Luck!

I've had problems with McAffee and have now switched over to Norton Virus.
You may want to give that a try, I don't think Mcaffee are as up to date. As
far as CPR content goes, well if you get a virus then so much for receiving
all this interesting info on the greatest rail system in the world!
