Adding a VFD and braking resistor allows almost seamless reversals.? You don't have to wait for the spindle to stop and then reverse to keep it from banging.? With a VFD, the VFD controls the deceleration and subsequent acceleration in the opposite direction nice and smooth.
Plus, you'll need the VFD when you convert to CNC ;-)
