Safe to buy? YES!!!
Tony, I just purchased one (a zBitX) at Dayton (FDIM, the QRP Meeting) and have tinkered with it learning everything I can. The bands have been less than stellar but everything seems to work well for me. What fun in a little box for $170 (no shipping if bought at Dayton). If you like to tinker and experiment it looks like a good choice. I would rather have a new thingy to play with (built an Old Friend for 30 meters and a CFT1 on the dining room table in our condo this past winter in Florida -the weather was ucky) so this was an ideal something new to get on the bands with when our club does a POTA adventure. I am always the first to try new things but our club has two more zBitX¡¯s on the way, one by a newbie and one by a more experienced ham. We have lots of fun with QRP and low power here in northwest Michigan. The G90 seems to be a popular item too. I remember when I first moved to this area 53 years ago there was a ham who was rather well heeled and always had the best and newest rigs back when they cost a month¡¯s wages or sometimes more. We had difficulty not drooling on his newest rig. Now it¡¯s easy to have the newest in the QRP field as the size and cost is much different by comparison. And if you want more power the amplifiers aren¡¯t that expensive today. Dave K8WPE

Physical Disassembly ZbitX 3
Hi All, I have had my Zbitx for a month or so now. Been using it. Had a few QSOs. Noted the problems others have identified. Choo Choo train noises. and heating. I would like to take apart to add shielding etc. Have taken the front panel off but can't see how to withdraw the 'sandwich'. Rather not resort to 'brute force and ignorance'. Has anyone posted a YouTube video of how to do this or some pictures. Also like to know how to upload FT8 QSOs to PSKreporter & QRZ.com does the zBitx work in a similar way to WSJTX in this respect? If these are seen as silly questions. Please no snark. My request for future revisions for the zBitx to display the IP address it has been assigned somewhere on one of its screens. 73 de 2E0IIY Andrew Wade 6 Elliott Grove BRIXHAM TQ5 8RT 07971 827026

Mic for zBitx 7
BitXers? Someone have a link for a decent low cost mic for the zBitx? All my mics are Kenwood or Yaesu. They wont work of course. I am assuming any standard 3.5mm plug microphone will work but want to check with the group before I order -- "POWER, WE DON'T NEED NO STICKIN' POWER" - EVERY KX2 OWNER Always respect the airwaves, 73 de KI7PBR, Gary

ZbitX replacement knob? 6
Hi, I am looking for a nice metal replacement knob for the ZbitX. Would be nice if it had a tuning dimple or knurled edges. Prefer a vendor on eBay, Amazon, or Mousser or someone in US. Has anyone replaced theirs? Regards, Everett-WB9FUW

Sbitx v3 HW_settings.ini gone- how fix? 11
Hello All, well I did it this time. I was trying to make a backup of my Sbitx software and I had a usb stick it one port, on my laptop, and an SD Card in another port. When it came for the backup the imager program asked me if drive F, so I thought, was ready for formatting, of course I said yes and I soon found out it was drive E instead of F. Well anyway I deleted my only copy of my Sbitx software for my Sbitx v3. My question is how do I make another HW_settings.ini file. Do I do some type of calibration? I heard that you don¡¯t calibrate the Sbitx v3 the same way you calibrate a Sbitx v2, so I¡¯m stuck. Also I¡¯m moving over to the 64 bit version of the software. Do you still use the same HW_Settings.ini file for the 64 bit versions software? I did a search over the past postings ani I couldn¡¯t I find a definitive answer to my problem. HELP!! thanks for all the participation in advance. All thoughts welcome. Thanks again, 73, Robert, AG6LK

zBitx - TX pitch in FT8 not shown on the displayed spectrum 4
When working in FT8 on my zBitx I can see the spectrum of the received signal, but I can't check if my TX pitch is at the unused frequency. In sBitx it was shown with the red line on the spectrum. I can see the red line on the spectrum, but its position does not depend on the TX pitch value. Do others have the same problem? Is it a problem with wrong version of the display firmware (i have not upgraded it)? 73, Wojtek - SP5DAA

zBitx doesn't start up 5
Just got my zBitx today. Powered up, and the nice screen pops right up. It says "Waiting for the zBitx to start..." and no other response. Been waiting a long time, but no joy. Tried power down and restart - same result. Any advice would be appreciated. 73 Dave, VE3WI

Update On Shipping Delays from HF Signals 9
I ordered my zBitx on April 3rd, 6 weeks ago. I sent sales an email and got this response "Right now, we expect your order(#3941) to ship by early next week. We ran into some unexpected hiccups with sourcing some components which slowed us down a bit" Fingers crossed I should have mine next week. That will be 7 weeks from order date. Clearing a spot on my work bench to bring it up. Got a road trip in a couple weeks that I hope to have it ready for Excited and anxious, 73 de KI7PBR Gary

Error starting sBitx v4.3 64 bits 10
Good afternoon, I had a Raspberry TFT screen saved and today I put it on a sBitx computer version DE. But now a problem has appeared, the sBitx does not start and gives the error "snd_mixer_selem_has_capture_switch: Assertion `elem' failed". pi@sbitx:~ $ cd sbitx pi@sbitx:~/sbitx $ ./sbitx sbitx v4.301 Unable to load ~/sbitx/data/hw_settings.ini Loading default_hw_settings.ini instead i2cbb.c:writing address failed at 8 sbitx: simple.c:652: snd_mixer_selem_has_capture_switch: La declaraci¨®n `elem' no se cumple. Abortado pi@sbitx:~/sbitx $ If I disconnect the power supply from the TFT screen and restart the computer everything works correctly. The Raspberry is a v4, the OS is 64 bits and the sBitt version is 4.3. Any ideas? Thanks, Ram¨®n EA4GZI

zBitx - final messages from my QSO are not shown on the screen 2
When I use my zBitx in FT8 mode with AUTO set to ON, the messages related to finalizing of my QSO (RR73/RRR and 73) are not displayed on the screen (at the end of the scrollable list). I have to open the log (with OPEN) to check if the QSO was successfully completed. However, when I browse the sbitx.db with sqlitebrowser, I can see those messages in the "messages" table. Is this "feature" somehow configurable? 73, Wojtek SP5DAA

sBitx or zBitx: Analyzing the FT8 messages in my application 2
I'm interested in analyzing the received FT8 messages in a software (e.g., a Python script) to detect messages from DX entities which I'm especially interested in. In case of sBitx, it can be a script running on the radio itself. In case of zBitx it can be a script running on a connected laptop or smartphone. Is such a functionality already supported, or should I patch the software myself? 73, Wojtek SP5DAA

sBitx v4 9
Before I spend any more time building out code modules for the sbitx, I¡¯d like to know - is that product ¡°never to be sold again¡± or simply delayed? While I enjoy spending days modifying my own radio, I need to know if it¡¯s going to around in the future. VA3CGF

ZBitx Shutdown Function 13 #zbitx
After working with Unix/Linux systems for a lifetime, i know that bad stuff will happen if you just disconnect the power on a regular basis. I still feel a twitch in my fingers if I don¡¯t run sync; sync; sync; before a shutdown or halt command ;) I¡¯ve forked Farhan¡¯s code and added a button on the UI to shut down the Pi Zero: https://github.com/khkremer/zbitx.git https://github.com/khkremer/zbitxfrontpanel.git The "Shutdown" function is behind the "Menu" button. After selecting it and confirming, wait until the LED on the Pi Zero (which you can see through the covered USB connector) stop to blink. I moved the confirmation button a bit up so that it¡¯s harder to fat finger the shutdown with an unintentional double tap on the shutdown button. de Karl Heinz - K5KHK

zBitx keyboard and monitor recommendation and advice 12
I and a few friends just got back from Four Days In May with our new zBitx xcvrs. The manual recommends using a monitor and keyboard for setting up time and some other features but I don't have those available. Could members of this email site recommend a small key board and monitor and advise on a size for each. I want it to be portable to take when we go to Florida next winter. Amazon and eBay are fine sources. Dave K8WPE. Djwilcox01 at Gmail dot com PS to Jim (past CARC Club President) Jim, I know you used similar items when active with your small portable rigs. What say you?

zBitx +-2 MHz transmit spurs? 11
I tested transmitting from my new zBit into a tinySA with 50 dB of attenuators in between. First the good news, the 2nd and 3rd harmonics seem ok (43 dBc down or more). But I also see spurs at carrier +-2 MHz, and a 2 MHz, that seem to be a higher level than 43 dB below carrier. These 2 MHz sideband spurs were still visible when testing output on multiple other bands, from 40M to 12M. I don't see such 2 MHz spurs when testing my other transceivers, so they don't seem to be from the tinySA. Wierd measurement error? Or is my zBitx bad? Or could this be a hardware design or software issue. Or inter-mod from one of the digital circuit clocks or IO or display, requiring more shielding. I also hear noise on the audio, even with no antenna connected, pulsing at about 3 or 4 Hz. Ideas? Potential solutions? Thanks and 73, Ron, n6ywu

I purchased the rig in the pic from eBay about a year ago. The best I can remember it is a version of the Bit-X but not sure. I haven¡¯t used it other than som RX because it didn¡¯t have a manual and operation isn¡¯t obvious to me.
