Looking for the V2 Hardware Upgrade Info

There was once a document sent out to owners that provided information on upgrading the V2 PCB to prevent MOSFET failure of the IRFZ24Ns, etc. Could someone send me a copy or provide on the wiki? Thanks JJ

uBITx v3 upgrade
6
I have a v3 #uBITX that I have not deployed yet and has just been sitting in the “Projects To Do” pile. Is there a site anywhere that breaks down any mods that can be made to upgrade it to be on par with the current v6? It seems half of the links in the email footers are dead or the site they link to have not been updated in years :-/ Thank you. Fred – KC3HMS

#zbitx Spam, Fishing, and Unwanted Email

#zbitx
Hello, I'm now seeing spam and spearfishing attempts via this group's threads and as a result of Ragav's shipping email last month. Can the group owner go through and review the privacy, security, and message settings on this group, please? From what I'm reading, there are settings that should block non-members from posting fishing attempts.

zbitx batteries, safety and monitoring
5
I hope the zbitx will have reverse voltage protection this time? Since it might be too easy to install batteries the wrong way around. I hope it will have a way to monitor its own input voltage. I would prefer to shut down the radio gracefully before it’s too late, and can probably figure out how to put a battery indicator somewhere visible on the UI (such as a tray icon) if that’s not already done. As it is, when I operate the sbitx from laptop batteries, I don’t get any warning unless I’m monitoring the voltage externally; 9v is pretty low but still working, but at some point a few minutes after it gets down that low, the DC/DC converter cuts power to the pi, while transmitting of course. So for portable use I sure wish I didn’t need an external voltmeter to keep from discharging the batteries that far. And what about using LiFePO4 batteries? They have a reputation for enduring many more charge cycles. (And also safer, and lower energy density.) But the voltage is 3.2 instead of 3.7. 18650 with 2500mAh capacity apparently exists but is hard to find. 2200mAh here: https://eu.nkon.nl/rechargeable/li-ion/18650-size/jgne-18650-2200mah-6-6a-lifepo4-3-2v.html Sag under load might be about 0.1V per cell; and by the time the voltage reaches 6V for both, they are probably discharged quite a bit, from what I read. So can the zbitx really operate all the way down to 6V? If the 5V regulator is linear LDO, it should even be more efficient at a lower voltage, right?

Bob Larkin, W7PUA, has built a new radio!
9
Bob Larkon, W7PUA, is one of the three authors of the EMRFD. He has been a large influence over the years, and I learnt a whole lot of RF and SDR stuff from him. He is a remarkable homebrewer and a very thorough and astute designer. He has desiged a very unusual radio, the Tiny Ten. Do read about it on https://www.janbob.com/electron/TinyTen/TinyTen.htm It is a standalone IQ radio QRP radio with swappable filters for different bands powered by a Teensy. Unlike the under performing SDRs that we see around these days, it is a real thing with a very thorough design and high performance. - f

zBitx with external Amplifier
11
If I buy a zBitx when I use it in the shack I plan to add a QRP-Labs 50 Watt Amp. This full QSK Amp needs a stereo wire with +5V and ground put into the Amp stereo 3.5 socket to be triggered in transmission. Does the zBitx have this 3.5V stereo PTT socket? If not it should be easy to add one but where in the schematic will I find the necessary +5V signal to trigger the Amp? 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

sbitx v3 issues
22
So I have had the board running for about a week. However, today I noticed that my output power is reduced, and the 4 drivers are very hot, with just power on, sbitx not started. I see nothing obvious. I would like some suggestions as to where to begin, as I have made the mistake of getting the board only (which I disagree with having no recourse with HF Signals, regardless of cause). Any help would be appreciated. -- Mike - K8MCB

uBitxV6 - Xmt power equalization: Another Relay Modification (added to Allison's mod.)
I recently completed Allison's (KB1GMX) transistor replacement modification to improve transmit output power on the higher bands (https://ubitx.net/fix-fix-uneven-tx-output-across-bands/). The results were very good, except the highest bands (10M and 12M) were lower than hoped for. The same ubitx.net page recommends a three relay modification which provides separate transmitter level potentiometers (RV1) for each band group. However, my collection of parts did not include the three relays or pots. I only saw need for improvement on the highest bands. Every radio is a bit different. But here is what I measured into a dummy load (supply voltage 12.6 vdc, CW straight key)... Stock (without modification, no measurement recorded for 60M, 30M, 17M, or 12M) 80M 60M 40M 30M 20M 17M 15M 12M 10M 10.4 - 5.8 - 5.8 - 4.25 - 2.25 watts After Allison's modification (without relay modification) 11 9 11 4.9 9.8 7 8 5 4.5 watts After my relay mod, all the same, except: 8 7 watts My relay modification utilizes one 6vdc relay and a simple transistor AND gate to partially bypass RV1, during transmit on 10M and 12M only. Here is the schematic:

Learning CW
14
I guess it’s about time I get back to that. I tried more than 30 years ago, with some DOS morse tutor program, got maybe to the point of recognizing half the alphabet or so, and stopped putting time into it. But I got a code practice oscillator, and I enjoyed practicing sending more than decoding back then. So I wonder if there’s some software for the sbitx for that: a morse code tutor that exercises you both ways, sending and receiving? I just got my first paddle, a Putikeeg from AE. So of course I had to have a shot at reading the gpio pins for that last night. I got it debounced too. So I could keep going and write yet another code practice program, but I suspect it’s quite redundant. There are several packages on the pi already (apt-get search morse or so will find them) and I guess they are all the type that play tones for me to decode. And there are CW decoders of course, which take audio input. But measuring timing to detect what I’m trying to send with my key could be done directly, rather than generating audio and treating that as the input.

sBitx and zBitx with SCAMP mode and Fldigi
6
I'm testing my QRP-Labs QDX with emergency situations in mind. I already configured it with JS8Call, with Fldigi in RTTY mode and having just installed Fldigi v.2.0.6.20 an alpha version from http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/, an alpha version which incorporates a new emergency mode called SCAMP. I tested on my QDX the sub-version SCAMPFSK (2 carriers) and SCAMPOOK (1 carrier) as well as much slower versions and a faster version in a dummy load and they work nicely. There remains to test them with a real antenna. A manual of SCAMP can be downloaded on https://www.eevblog.com/forum/rf-microwave/proposal-for-another-amateur-radio-data-mode/?action=dlattach;attach=1296757 I wonder if after installing the alpha Fldigi this "Simple Conversational Amateur Messaging Protocol (SCAMP)" could be tested with a sBitx or even better a zBitx. With a zBitx it would make an interesting emergency transceiver for EMCOM organizations. by Daniel Marks, KW4TI Comments will be appreciated as well as results of possible testings. 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

sBitx V4 on Gigaparts

Gigaparts sells the sBits v3. But now they are accepting pre-orders for the sBitx V4. I have not heard anything about this from HFSIGNALS. Anyone know what the new model is all about?

CW Mode Macro Issue - Version 4.301 64 Bit
9
Hello, I dug through the documentation that I could find but haven't found a solution. Regardless of whether I use the default or customized macros, the sbitx app in CW mode only keys the first word in the macro text. For example, F1 for CQ is supposed to send a full line of text but stops after the first 'CQ.' The reader is sensitive enough to always pick up noise even though I have a clear slice of band to myself. I also verify against online band activity and with one of my other rigs. Is the background noise being picked up between words and terminating the macro? I've gone through the majority of the onscreen settings for CW mode but I'm not finding anything relevant. Decreasing the BW decreases the gibberish caused by noise a bit but hasn't resolved the issue. Thoughts? It's probably something simple.
