Small 3-5A brick power supply recommendation?

Hi All,

I have a nice 2A brick PS that works well with my BITX40 and has no RFI issues.? I'm looking for a similar style 3-5A PS for my upcoming uBITX build.

I tried a Chanzon brand "UL certified" 5A adapter found on Amazon for $15, but the RFI is terrible! It makes a loud squeal come out of the BITX40 speakers.? Back in the box it goes. Thank Amazon for their return policy.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive brick-style adapter that is known to work without RFI issues? Ideally something that already has the correct DC jack, no fan, and more portable than your typical 30A PSU (I already have several of those).

Thanks!

I use an old heavy metal Pyramid PS-3 Power supply. It is rated at 13.8Vdc 3A constant 5A? intermittent.? BUT, the important thing is that the voltage
is screwdriver adjustable. Having read much about the ubitx audio amp problems during the months while I waited for mine to arrive, I was concerned about
using 13.8V, and I adjusted the output to 12.5 Vdc. I have had no problems with this.

Beware of "12 volt" supplies. Many amateur radio products are expected to be used in vehicles, where the typical voltage is 13.6V when the engine is running,
and for full power most hams are happy with 13.6Vdc from their home "12V" power supplies.? And simple wall-wart supplies are very poorly regulated. A typical?
"12v 1A" wall wart supply will provide 16 to 18 volts with no load or a small load.

I have a few pieces of EDAC EA11203A available. They are 12V 8.5A output and are roughly 7 x 2.5 x1.5" and have the correct power plug and wiring. They are new, removed from medical carts that I purchase and need to replace them with a larger unit. I use them with my uBitx with no EMI. My largest expense in selling you the unit is shipping. If you or anyone else is interested, let me know and we can figure out a reasonable cost. I also have? larger 18A units with a different plug.

Are they 8.5 amp or 2.5 amp? Everyone I have seen for sale are 2.5 amps

Howard, I am interested.

If Excessive regulated voltage from your power supply is a concern?
13.8vdc with a goal near 12vdc.
Solution:
Inserting a diode in series with power feed will reduce voltage by .7 volts per diode, Two diodes 1.4 volts.
?13.8 volts —->|—-->|- ——12.4 volts

Current rating of diodes must handle 5 plus amps Note! ? Bridge rectifiers offer four high current diodes in a one package!?

Thoughts!
1. ?Reverse polarity power hookup protection?
Adding a diode inside radio in series power lead could save your radio, as no current will flow threw diode when power leads are reversed.
2. ?The bad! ?You will waste power in voltage dropping diodes as heat.
P=IxE. ? ? 5A x 1.4V= 7 Watts in heat when transmitting?
Receive is much less. ?
If you wish to run your radio from a battery this is a not a good idea. ?It wastes power.?

Alan:
The issue is shipping. Even if I give it to you for free, depending on where you are, it might cost me more to ship it then it sells for on eBay. I am zip 10533. If you can figure out a shipment method that would leave me a few $, and give you a better price then eBay, let me know and I can ship it to you.

shipping weight for the EDAC power supply is 2 lbs.? USPS ground is $10.13. So anyone that wants one, they are $20 each including shipping. I have to check how many spare units I have on hand, but it is less then 5. I will be getting more later. Anyone that is near my QTH and wants to pick it, it would be $8. If you can find a cheaper way to ship, I can reduce the price accordingly.

Another option for shipping within the US is USPS priority mail flat rate boxes.? The smallest cheapest one is 8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8" and costs $7.20 in postage regardless of weight.? You can order the boxes free at ? You can also print the postage on the USPS site and schedule a pick up from you mail carrier.? I am not looking for a power supply just trying to help.

That box is too small for this supply.

I'd be in for one at $20 if any are unspoken for.

Howard: I think USPS priority mail is the way to go also.

A will either use a regional A priority mail box, or send it USPS retail ground depending on where you live in the continental US. The price is $20 paid by? Pay Pal or personal check.
