HEY NEW PERSON, yeah you, go check out bitxmap.com and mark your spot in the world
Folks if you need help adding yourself to please just ask.? If you mess something up on the map please let me know so I can fix it.? I understand the format is not intuitive for some and I really want everyone to enjoy the map and hopefully use it so please speak up if you're having problems.? There is a link to instructions right in the map description that I cobbled together.? If anyone has a better way to explain how to add to the map please share.? If you had a hard time figuring it out please also share.? I want to make this as accessible to as many of us as possible.? None of us were born knowing how to do this.? If you struggled to figure the map out chances are someone else had the same problem.? Let's learn from each other.

Chris It seems that there may be room for some modification of the BITXMAP software. If it were coupled to a remote receiver or one of the beacon receiver systems it might be possible to make BITXMAP more usable by showing if a BITXMAP location has been active recently.? A cell phone app might be supplied that allows users of BITXMAP to see who is active at any particular time.? A bit more exotic, but if the site supported SMS (Short Message Service) it might be usable as a contact scheduling system.? Lots of possibilities if you think about it. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI think part of the problem may be in the provided instructions, specifically this step: ??? click add to map at the bottom of the box that pops up ...there is no "add to map", nor is there any box that "pops
up".?? what you *can* do, is look up an address and then click "show on
map" at which point a little (red) dot is shown on the map.???
Still no boxes popping up.

...there is no "add to map", nor is there any box that "pops up".??I'm assuming you do not have a google account.? We later figured out that even with the permissions set as open as possible you need a google account to post.? That is one unfortunate issue with the platform.? As always, if someone has a better way to do this I will gladly pass the torch. ? -- |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý...should never assume.?? ;)
perhaps the linked directions might be amended to include this vital information, so the next person doesn't have to discover it the long way.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýin fact.. there's a step missing, as well. ?-- after being logged in to your google account and viewing the bitxmap page, you next click the [Edit] link immediately below where the link to the instructions is displayed.? Then, the entire screen redraws in a new (editing) interface, which then behaves as you describe in your instructions.

If an api exists, I would be happy to work on thisChris, Thanks for stepping up and offering to help.? I started looking at the API's available and they now all require a billing account to access.? While I am happy to keep renewing the domain I am not really in a position to tie my credit card to the map not fully understanding what kind of cost would add up.? The map data can be manually exported as a kml/kmz file but that is static.? I threw together the current map on a whim a few years ago thinking there might be interest and personally not knowing how to do anything else.? We might be at the point where starting over is the best approach ideally pulling in the existing data.? Whether that is of interest to you or not you will have to decide.? I've said it many times and I still mean it when I say I do not consider the map, data, or domain name mine I was just the first person to do anything with the idea and would happily hand it all over to someone that actually knows what they are doing with the only stipulation being no one profits from it. ? -- |

I didn't remember that the [Edit] link also had to be selected. Appears to stay set with cookies.? (also the Google login) So I can see how it would be easy to restart a browser and do your best to provide step by step instructions, but you aren't Starting from the same place a new user would be starting. That's why beta testers that provide usable feedback are so important, especially to us that are hobby developers. BTW, I have been playing around with some automation using Selenium in python. (I'm starting on the ground floor for both, without oop understanding) The generic Live icon is changing Xpath (so I need to figure out how to always select to correct live icon) Other than that, the simple proof of concept script is working, but with known holes that wouldn't make it main stream robust. Goggle has blocked login from automation scripts. My work around at the moment: I start a new Chrome window from the command line with a debugging port enabled (which can be automated) then my simple script works with that port. Doug, May I suggest the idea of adding a "Live" Layer to the google map? The idea that the user would add their location when live, and then remove when off.? This has the benefit of selecting the Layer and see just the live operators. Rgds, Gary |
