Opinions vary, news of Elon Musk's latest exploits have never been covered here before - I see no reason to start now.

Do we want to start debating the suitability of a first-time medical device maker going from blank sheet of paper to respirator in a hospital ICU without *any* meaningful regulatory review in two weeks?

Typically the goal of international groups such as this one is to remain apolitical and avoid discussions of topics that only affect one region By staying on topic. (Remember the "CA State is shutting down all repeaters" scare? The "France wants to eliminate the 2m band" scare? In my opinion those discussions didn't belong here either, thought they were arguably Amateur Radio-related, unlike the Elon Musk link.) This group has a specific purpose on it's groups.io homepage:

"This group exists for constructors of the various BITX projects, to discuss all aspects of the design and construction including problems, components, modifications and experiences using the rigs."

Source:?/g/BITX20

My vote is to stay on-topic, but mine is only one of the 7,833 voices on this reflector. I'll happily reconsider if/when I hear Elon has ordered a uBitx has had some feedback or improvements on the design.

It looks like the first batch of mask donations are complete and that work continues to produce ventilators.? Looks like GM is also gathering parts to produce ventilators.? Very good news.

It's fantastic that members of this group are working this problem as well.

Stay safe, BITX family - we have a lot of radios to build and contacts to make!

Ken, I come here for the BITX info, to learn, to share and to make friends.

I generally read most of the threads but if there is a thread that doesn't interest me I don't worry. Just move on.?

A recent ARRL news post highlighted the BITX20 group effort to work up a low cost design for a safe ventilator.??

These are strange times that might offer an opportunity for hams to "make a difference".?

My request is for those not interested in this subject to mute the topic for the next few days.? Work is ongoing to form a new group to focus directly on this effort.? This will hopefully move the ventilator messages to that venue.? If off-topic posts persists after the new group is functioning, those posts can be moderated and redirected to that group.??

I would ask those who are setting up a new info and control web site for the ventilator project to post a notification here when their site is up and running.? Once that is done we can take steps to move ventilator traffic over to that new discussion site.

Thanks

The first 1000 Tesla/SpaceX ventilators have been delivered:
? ??

Impressive, was just vague talk last week.
Bodes well for ramping up production quickly.
Hope they can build them cheaply enough to get them everywhere they will be needed.

Italy currently rations ventilators, only available to those under 60.

Thank you Arv.? ?Probably 35 messages have gone out internal the group working on the ventilator in the last 24 hours alone.? ?Two programmers have written working or nearly working code to improve on the tiny stuff that I wrote; one press release was authorized; a university PIO has come on line, and three manufacturers have stepped up to potentially?assist or manufacture.? ?All of that happened with very little email here (unless I happened to slip up and sned it to the wrong place and if so, I apologize) -- and now we are at the point of moving toward a printed circuit board design and final software.? ? Some had ASKED for updates on this forum.? ?All of this, including frantic efforts to find suitable pressure transducers etc, fervent discussions of legal matters, and safety concerns and some arguments that were a waste of time...all happened outside this forum (which was appropriate).? ?97.1 indicates amateur radio is to be a RESERVOIR of trained people....and this in keeping with the outworking of precisely that.? ?Once a sufficient number became involved, there was no further need to discuss on this forum (unless by accident I sent the wrong place, my apologies).

THANKS for all who have volunteered their time and expertise, the group who started this has been overwhelmed with offers.
Lets hope this does some good.

It's not that big a problem for me, I have no need to try and force my opinion on others - I simply shared my opinion, and when challenged, I responded.

Gentlemen,
We need to think in terms of component availability as well. The I2C display is most difficult of the options that we have. The 16x2 LCD display is the most common (with 4 bit parallel interface), followed by 20x4 LCD (interface).?
Jack, will you take care to wrap the display routines so we can switch the display type?
Sam, what kind of connector will you have between the controller and the pressure gauge? The pressure gauge will be inside the pressured space and we will need to bring the wires out. As the pressure differential is not much, we can make do with some kind of sealed connector. Given the low pressure differential, I would imagine that a 9 pin (RS-232 kind of) connecto should work. We can bring out A5, A5, Ground and?+5v. This will allow us to use either analog or I2C sensor.?
Sam, we will also need a battery backup. I would strongly suggest a sealed lead acid batter. it has a long life and it can withstand bad charging methods. Or we can use NiCad cells, your call (I strongly oppose LiPo as they are a hazard)
Lemme? know these decisions and I will build them into the box.

Sorry to spam like this,
A fourth option for the display is the ubitx v6 like display. This is a tft touch display (which means endless variation on the user interface) it costs about 6 dollars. It is available in good quantities. The 2.4 inch display?is quite popular and it has a good supply as well.

I have created a new group for those interested in the ventilator activity. (/g/VentilatorDevelopers), so there should be a wind-down of that topic's posts here.

True, have an FDA/UL approved ventilator would be great, but if your choices are a ventilator held together with bailing wire and chewing gum offers some chance of surviving and without it, you die, I think most people are going to opt for crappy ventilator. Ken,
Looks like you convinced Arv and Farhan.
And actually, I agree as well.
But given the exponential growth of this pandemic and the dire predicament that
regions a week or two ahead of us are in, I was inclined to defend the discussion.
I expect this to be my last post here on ventilators.

I've long been convinced that Tesla/SpaceX have some exceptional engineers.
But doubt anything will be available everywhere (think Yemen, Syria, Zimbabwe, Myanmar,
far NE Oregon) within a few weeks.? Designing something simple enough to be replicated?
wherever it's needed (assuming they can find lawn sprinkler valves and can get a shipment
of 10000 autostuffed control boards) could prove critical.

> A fourth option for the display is the ubitx v6 like display.

A 16x2 seems simplest and adequate.?
If putting everything down on one board, a 48pin STM32F* would be easy to obtain.
Lots of different options if any particular flavor becomes unavailable, has plenty of IO pins.
The Nano modules have been hard to get, I assume due to factories shutting down.

To be clear, I thought about this last night, and my 1/7,388ths of the group opinion is that there are four basic situations. For this example. Imagine someone wrote a book, the situation could be:

A) A list member writes a book on-topic of the group,
B) A non-list member writes a book on-topic of the group,
C) A list member writes a book off-topic of the group,
D) A non-list member writes a book off-topic of the group.

In my opinion, both situation A) and B) are perfectly appropriate discussions for BITX20, as the discussions are on-topic. Situation C) is acceptable, as it is one of our own sharing an accomplishment that (hopefully) some in the BITX20 group might be interested in and to the extent the messages between list members regarding their ventilator project was discussed here, it is fine - but once people start joining BITX20 on groups.io just to discuss the ventilator project and not the BITX20 family of radios, it may be time to start a new group... We appear to be at that point, and the new group has been created.

The Elon Musk discussion was off-topic and did not involve any list members, so it clearly falls into situation D), so in my opinion it was out of place.

But given the exponential growth of this pandemic and the dire predicament that
regions a week or two ahead of us are in, I was inclined to defend the discussion.
I expect this to be my last post here on ventilators.
Agree and agree.

Still thinking about how to manage the "hams working on ventilators" traffic versus
the rest of the BITX-20 group discussions.? Wonder if it would work to let the ventilator
traffic continue but keep it under a very specific #topic header.? This would allow
those who are not interested in ventilating to just mute that topic so they would
never see it again.? Your thoughts...?

Thanks

Ken,

Your best bet is convince the forum moderator, that would be Arv:

I suppose you could check with Farhan, he may still have some pull here:
? ??/g/BITX20/message/2
? ??/g/BITX20/message/77283

Failing the above, perhaps start your own group?

Talk about this pandemic will be everywhere that people communicate.
If you want to avoid any such discussion, I suggest you pull the plug on?
your computer, radio and TV till about this time next year.

Back to the topic:??
Hopefully, if I need a ventilator, it will be something fully vetted by the FDA and UL and whatever.
Hard to imagine Tesla and GM producing enough at sufficiently low cost to satisfy the needs
of every African village.? This Nano + SprinklerValve thing may or may not be the answer,
but seems an effort well worth supporting.?

> My vote is to stay on-topic,
I haven't seen a post here about the Bitx20 in ages.? ;-)

In my opinion those discussions didn't belong here either, thought they were arguably Amateur Radio-related, unlike the Elon Musk link.) This group has a specific purpose on it's homepage:

"This group exists for constructors of the various BITX projects, to discuss all aspects of the design and construction including problems, components, modifications and experiences using the rigs."

My vote is to stay on-topic, but mine is only one of the 7,833 voices on this reflector. I'll happily reconsider if/when I hear Elon has ordered a uBitx has had some feedback or improvements on the design.
