Bitx qso night

Well... I called CQ/listened for 15 minutes starting at 6PM PDT, and heard nothing on 7195. I did see that my TX was being heard by an SDR receiver in Sedona, AZ (i'm in Carson City, NV), but no reply to my CQ. I also listened to an SDR receiver in Pennsylvania and could make out parts of a QSO that mentioned the bitx40, but that was about it.

Maybe not as many West Coast bitx40 users, or my dipole is shooting at too high an angle.

I suppose we just keep trying!

I've been calling in the Midwest US for about 20 minutes.? No joy.

Hearing someone in the background here in Folsom CA but can't make it out

KC8WBK, Paul, Southwest MI, Bitx

Bitx to Bitx QSO:

KC1FSZ 5x5 Bruce, Boston, Bitx
KD2IQN 5x5, Tim, Sullivan County NY, Bitx

Lots of noise, some static, but decent propagation at times.

I’m hearing a KD9 calling CQ BitX ??pretty strong in? KC area.? Also heard KC8WBK here in Kansas City. His signal however was ?FM’ing and just above the noise? not ?fully readable. ??KC5RT

Nice qso with N2CQR. He was good 58. Heard other stations KD2IQN, KD9KB? and others very weak and qrn an issue; but, great fun.

FWIW, I could hear other QSO's on 40m, so I'm pretty sure my RX is working. Frequency appeared to be spot on, after calibrating with a frequency counter, so I guess propagation is just not working in our favor..

I also heard what I believe to have been a bitx40 user in Vancouver, WA on 7195 kHz,, but I never heard name or callsign after listening for several minutes. Also, the signal faded in and out multiple times during each transmission.

What causes FM'ing. My Bitx seems to be right on frequency, but I have had comments that my signal sounds like it's FM'ing. I listened to and recorded myself on web sdr. Strange sound. I am not proficient in doing any arduino changes. Any other options or suggestions to troubleshoot? Thanks

7195 was extremely noisy tonight. It was somewhat painful to try to listen for faint signals fading in and out, and difficult to have a conversation.? Around 9:20pm propagation improved quite a bit. If it had been less noisy, we would have been able to have a clear qso and easy conversation.

As QRP artists, we always need to search out best propagation times and move away from frequencies with noise and high powered stations.? Picking a frequency ahead of time is always a gamble.

I recommend that we move away from 7200, it is a high activity part of the band.? One area that is somewhat quieter is 7179.? This area will sometimes get a DX pileup but generally is quiet. It is near the Extra band at 7175 but far enough away to avoid transmitting outside of the General band. ?

What were the Bitx-Bitx qso distances?

I had one at 1228 km, and one at 949 km.

FMing usually is cause by VFO or BFO starving for power on TX voice peaks.
Check Power supply regulation. ...Fred..KC5RT

It will be difficult for the hams in western time zones at a scheduled time of 9pm Eastern because propagation may not be ideal until later after sunset.? It might be a good idea to schedule a time at local 9pm in each time zone.

For the first half hour or more I heard no one.

Then I heard W1LY calling CQ.?
I copied both sides of most of his contacts, partially as signal was constantly fading in and out, with a few breaks of a few minutes of clear signals.

I made two incomplete contacts with W1LY due to fading.

Willy, I also have a BitX40, my first HF Radio and HF experience. ?I had one prior local contact a few days ago to check out radio and my antenna. ?You were my first out of town contact…I am excited to put it mildly.
I am running stock BitX40, on a 12v Harbor Freight battery, into a untuned inverted V @ 20 foot in a tree, ends are 6 foot off ground.

In the last week, I have been listening to pileups to Crete, Trinidad & Tobago, and Germany…..I guess there is no looking back.

I have done one hack, the taming of the galloping tuner.

OK, My first Bitx40 was 6' away to the workbench next to me. Then I finished tuning up and worked 2 miles away.
Tonight was better 135 miles away in WI, I believe it was Jay. Then my final went out - only getting out about 4 watts.
I think the smoke was the clue somethings not right. Well back to the scope.
Ed W0OIC? - Stay with 7195 lower is bad, higher is bad. 8pm central time!

A week ago doing a qso I felt the final was getting hot.? I used a 8v battery with a repaired 2x2" fan blowing on the heat sink.? At 8 volts fan was low in noise.? I think that helped with the final heat.? Because I can't tell what my SWR is I set my match box to the 40 mtr setting I use with my Marauder HX10.? I need to get the CW hack put in so I can load the BITX40.? My BITX40 is getting powered from ?8AH 12v. battery.

Tonight the QSO party got busy about 2100 CST.? I think the time zone made the QSO party late...but the band was better.? There was a wide band buzz signal that I also heard on SDR located out of MI.? Seems it was everywhere.? Good night however considering the QSB and QRN.? My 40 mtr dipole is 10' high and oriented E/W.? With that I QSO with W1ly and my friend in HOVLAND, MN. ?happy with results that I can make better with higher antenna and the BITX40 in a decent case/box.? I also found when I move the DDS (carefully) to 90 deg to the recvr I can minimize the birdie at 7.199.? So shielding all lines like the DDS and making a separate copper shielded box to separate the DDS from the main PCB maybe very helpful.

Nice going Craig. I had no success last night and heard an annoying strange signal just below us. It was also on web sdr, which I frequently use to hear band conditions and to try and hear my signal. Earlier in the week I made 2 contacts in Switzerland, 3700 miles away. Surprised and pleased.
