After Bookworm 64 bit upgrade, the DSI monitor flickers #Raspberry4B #sBITX_v3

After Bookworm 64 bit update and upgrade, the DSI monitor flickers
After I did an update and upgrade on the Bookworm 64-bit system, the dsi (800x480) screen started flashing strangely, which
annoying light flickering and won't stop.
?
Has anyone experienced something similar and what did they do to make it go away?
I simply restored the operating system before the previous upgrade from a uSD card.
I don't think this is the solution.

I will test it on my 64 build and report back.

ps.: in addition to DSI, I also use HDMI at the same time.
The HDMI monitor works fine.
First I saw an image of horizontal lines on the DSI screen, then the image of the man with the raft came up, flashing.
This is only the case after the update && upgrade.

Those making the upgrade could be notified, but I don't know how to notify them.
You should know which updates affect DSI control. But that's just a guess.

I don't have such issue. The only obvious workaround for those using Wayland - change the display server back to X (which is what I use).

Try this...

  1. Go to the Pi menu
  2. Open Preferences
  3. Open Raspberry Pi Configuration
  4. Select the Display tab
  5. Change the Headless Resolution to 800X600
  6. Reboot

Let me know if that helps.. I will patch this in the next release.

How do I know if the OS is using Wayland or X?
I use sbitx with my own DSI monitor (800x400) and an HDMI monitor (1920x1080). This error only occurs when I do the upgrade. Some update will spoil the previous quality. It only spoils the display of the DSI monitor. HDMI works fine.

It also happened a few days ago, because I didn't know how to fix the log program I was using, so it was a backup and then an update. Then, for the first time, the DSI screen had only gray horizontal lines, which were flashing. The image was not visible.

In order to experiment with it, I have to upgrade again.
The grandkids will be here today, so I'll do that later.

Well.. I narrowed down the problem packages..

linux-headers-rpi-2712/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-headers-rpi-v8/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-image-rpi-2712/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-image-rpi-v8/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-libc-dev/stable,stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]

Now I am seeing this error..
pi@sbitx:~/sbitx $ ./sbitx?
sbitx v3.02
gpio: Unable to open GPIO direction interface for pin 17: No such file or directory
wiringPiISR: unable to open /sys/class/gpio/gpio17/value: No such file or directory

Will have to continue troubleshooting - possibly related to WiringPi. config.txt looks good and so does gpio readall.

Problem SOLVED

The grandchildren haven't arrived yet, so I made a backup on one of the 3 uSD cards, then booted from yesterday's uSD card backup.
Update, then I downloaded the upgradable list, which I wanted to copy into a text file. Then the icons disappeared and I couldn't do the copying.
I turned it off and restarted from the usb3.1 stick. Update again, get a list, then upgrade and copy the operation and the list to a text file.
Now the DSI screen does not flash after the upgrade.

The error was caused by the uSD card used as a backup.
Fortunately, I mark the uSD cards with colors so that I don't mix them up, so it can be determined that this card is indeed faulty.
I ask for everyone's forgiveness and understanding.
I hope the followers learn from this too.

JJ I have seen this GPIO error a few times after invoking an apt upgrade. I just reflashed instead of diagnosing it.?
But I am glad you experienced it as well .?

Well.. I narrowed down the problem packages..

linux-headers-rpi-2712/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-headers-rpi-v8/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-image-rpi-2712/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-image-rpi-v8/stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]
linux-libc-dev/stable,stable 1:6.6.20-1+rpt1 arm64 [upgradable from: 1:6.1.73-1+rpt1]

Now I am seeing this error..
pi@sbitx:~/sbitx $ ./sbitx?
sbitx v3.02
gpio: Unable to open GPIO direction interface for pin 17: No such file or directory
wiringPiISR: unable to open /sys/class/gpio/gpio17/value: No such file or directory

Will have to continue troubleshooting - possibly related to WiringPi. config.txt looks good and so does gpio readall.

This uSD card just tricked me. I bought 4 at the same time, three of which are still working. I don't know how long a uSD card lasts? It comes from a well-known manufacturer, evo+ 64GB, white color. One piece is permanently switched on in the camera, the rest I used here as an RPi backup. I look around a bit to see what I can expect. My trust in reliability has now been shaken.

I spent a good amount of time on this issue and found that the Pi update downloaded some incompatible files yesterday for whatever reason. The Pi distro was corrected sometime today and now downloads the correct files for the Pi4 platform. Someone fell asleep at the wheel over at Pi foundation HQ.?

This is now a non-issue for my build using the update/upgrade procedure.

FWIW- I recompiled WiringPi and reset the soundmapping to get it to work but the display was still having issues. Reflashed to Beta2 and performed an upgrade this morning and everything went smooth.

I should also say that these files do change config.txt and other settings. Previous changes to make the sBitx work will be overwritten. I have not had the energy or time to understand what and why - enjoying my time with family today.

?

We will let the dust settle.. There is obviously an issue with these packages on Pi4

pi@sbitx:~ $ sudo apt-get upgrade

Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
? linux-headers-rpi-2712 linux-headers-rpi-v8 linux-image-rpi-2712
? linux-image-rpi-v8

I have this error as well.? No DSI flickering but occasionally on boot the screen will go completely white and I have to restart the device.? Pretty positive these things started after I performed a package upgrade on the system.?

Jared

Unfortunately, as JES writes: "Someone fell asleep at the wheel over at Pi foundation HQ. "
You have to restore the state before the upgrade if you have a backup.

Unfortunately this issue is not resolved with the update. I have to spend time diagnosing the issue and making changes for the the next release.. Stay tuned.

I spent some time this evening to identify the cause. It was the kernel update that broke functionality.

I will soon release RC1 that fixes the flicker/whitescreen and GPIO errors. I've been testing this evening and no issues so far. Will need a few more days before I know for sure.

In the meantime, you can do this to avoid upgrading the kernel and still receive other updates.

I've added functionality to the./update?script on the beta2 build for now to hold the packages on my beta build..
You have to run this in terminal.. The ./update command is in there twice to pull from my repo then add the package hold..

cd $HOME
cd sbitx
./update
./update

You can then run?sudo apt update?without issues

If you are running another 64bit build, then?open terminal and copy/paste this..

sudo apt-mark hold linux-headers-6.6.20+rpt-common-rpi linux-headers-6.6.20+rpt-rpi-2712 linux-headers-6.6.20+rpt-rpi-v8 linux-image-6.6.20+rpt-rpi-2712 linux-image-6.6.20+rpt-rpi-v8 linux-kbuild-6.6.20+rpt

then run sudo apt update
