beyond our arguments about everything else, it is quite certain in my mind that packinf needs to improve. we will work on improving it. there have been quite a few complaints and we will ensure that something is done about it.? an important part of open sourcing the business processes is to be ready to take criticism, however harsh it may sound. so, people, let's see how we can deliver the boards more reliably. - f

Along with most here, I really appreciate the effort put into making this rig available. ?Makes it possible for remote communities to communicate, especially important after a disaster such as a hurricane. ?Addresses a real need. ?Looking forward to tinkering with it. ?
On shipping, a few vague (untested) suggestions.
From the photo on hfsigs, looks like the metal standoffs could be mounted to the top of the board and a plate of cardboard or flooring or pcb scrap drilled and bolted to the top to protect the electronics. ?A piece of styrofoam glued to the center of that plate to hold it off the center if needed. ?Leave the IRF510 not installed, doing a friction fit and low duty cycle transmission when checking the final. ?A bunch of extra work, but might be worth the trouble if significant numbers are getting damaged in transit.
Could offer to ship two boards together, bolted front to front, separated by two spacers. ?Most of us can find another ham to buddy up with.
My post of 19592 suggested a hinged metal box. ?If you can obtain something of proper dimensions there, perhaps sell it as an option, both as a possible enclosure and as a way of protecting the board. ?Keep the price of the basic kit low, charge real money for options such as this (and possibly a drilled out front panel?). ? Many of us would be happy to help fund the venture in this way.

Not to mention, as long as they are not being mistreated or have unsafe working conditions, who cares if they are UNDER 20, if they are gainfully employed and able to help support themselves and their families? I learned how to safely handle a soldering iron and use it properly before I was 13, why shouldn't they do likewise? Do not be so quick to judge the standards of other countries by your own. In the USA, kids in farming families still learn the meaning of hard work and responsibility, and supporting one's family, at an early age - values that too few of their more urban counterparts are learning these days.

If if makes you feel better, but Hyderabad isn't in "your book." Google the words young girls child labor India and switch to Image Browse mode and see what the world defines as young girls in India. When Farhan says young girls, he probably means unmarried females, but hopefully not prepubescent females.

I was just interested in the negative values for interest sake.
I did write it all out and it makes a lot of sense. Also noticed that the 300 HZ and 3kHZ are also inverted or flipped from the LSB side.

You know, you can get USB and LSB through the same Cohn filter. Remember that the filter is a passband filter about 3 kHz wide with an upper and lower skirt. For proper phasing, the LSB has to reflect off the lower skirt and the USB off the upper skirt. But the filter itself is really a passive object.
The trick is in adjusting the BFO frequency so that the filter thinks it is getting one or the other of the sidebands. If the incoming IF is just below the center frequency of the filter, it will pass it as LSB, and if the IF is just above the center frequency, it will pass it as USB.
So, since one generates both sidebands at the BFO mixer, merely changing the BFO frequency enough is all it takes to generate one or the other. Ha! Then if one changes the VFO to reflect which sideband is coming through the filter, one can have a dual sideband rig!
Say you wanted 20m and 40m. Then the 40m rig would use a VFO to generate ~7 MHz with the IF BELOW the center frequency of the filter, and a VFO to generate ~14 MHz with the IF ABOVE the center frequency. It is not so easy with analog VFO's; probably you would need two separate ones. But it is easy with a DDS.
Setting the BFO frequency is a matter of loading the crystal. Remember that we have to move the frequency only a few KHz to get either sideband. That is done by diode selection of each tuning (or diode selection of 2 crystals). We are generating both sidebands all the time. The particular IF we choose just selects which to send to the passive filter. Since the IF amplifier is wideband, it can easily handle a few KHz difference in frequency.
One would need to provide separate BPF's and LPF's for each band, of course -- but it is not too hard a thing to do.
There are some caveats to heed. The parallel resonant frequency is not too far up the USB and reaching that can have strange effects; so one must be careful in tuning around the USB. Else, it works. Alternatively, one can choose a different IF with a different, somewhat higher (by a few KHz) frequency crystal. Also remember that the center frequency is probably NOT that marked on the crystals. It is the measured serial frequency of the filter. In the case of the BITX40, that can be anything around 12 MHz. Say your IF is 11.996600 MHz. Then the center of the filter passband is probably 1.5-2.5 KHz above that. Exactly what is a measurement.
CW is also possible by allowing the BFO carrier to get through. It is less effective, however, since the passband is 2-3 KHz wide, and CW should have one about 700 Hz wide. But it can be done. One merely adds a third crystal to the BFO and allows the carrier through for the center of the passband. Some people have gotten around the wide passband problem by using varicaps to adjust the filter capacitance. But that introduces impedance problems and more extensive changing of circuits at times...

Yesterday I put in my order for my first BITX. ?I am really looking forward to getting it ! ? ?1. ? Is this LSB only? ? ? ?2. ? Is the new BITX40 cw capable? ? ? ?3. ? If not, can it -easily- be hacked to for cw use? ? ?4. ? I think bitx is a tool for self enjoyment in radio. All bitxers learned a lot from it. We all have clear understanding that if it doesn't work on arrival its perhaps good for us providing another opportunity to tinker.?
When Farhan announced availability of a partially assembled bitx many of us were overjoyed. Especially those who love tinkering but don't have access to pcbs and components. It was an opportunity for first time homebrewers too to climb up using this pedestal.
Since the launch of bitx some 10+ years ago perhaps no one talked of economics but of joys of learning and great homebrewing.
Please see the enormous efforts which go behind providing a kit and that too a semi ready one. I personally have such experience and can vouch about it.
Wishing you all a very happy Xmas time with bitx's. Happy homebrewing.

I know, ?I set my expectations too high. ? It's irresponsible of me to assume a product that was advertised as a functioning radio that could be on the air in an evening to arrive in a functional condition. While there are plenty of you that have built several of these from scratch, ?there are guys like me that look at this as a first opportunity to get hands on a functional radio to learn and experiment with, ?not to have to troubleshoot out of the box. ? Some of us just want a small radio that's mostly dialed in for portable operations.?
I don't remember anything from my testing for General or Extra that required me to be able to troubleshoot RF circuits. Frankly, ?it's not in my wheelhouse, ?nor do I really have the desire to learn it. ? Remember, there are multitudes of deep pools of interest in the hobby. ? While one person may be a retiree and have plenty of time to devote to troubleshooting, ?others of us in the hobby have busy family lives, ?demanding careers, and other obligations.?
Set me in front of Cisco ASA firewalls, Nexus core routers, ?security appliances, ?VoIP routing and switching, ?or just about anything else network related and I'm your Huckleberry. RF circuits are not where my talents lie.

So my advice to the guys complaining is if you want a perfect plug and play radio, buy a Kenwood or Yaesu or some other commercial radio.? They come double boxed, foam packed and ready to go. Because if you are a General class Ham and you can't troubleshoot a simple radio like the Bitx 40, you really need to learn.? And this is your opportunity.? Jerry K5LRU

Voy a escribirles en espa?ol pues el es el idioma en que mejor puyedo hacerlo, aunque google luego destruya mi idea original. Creo antes todo debemos darles las gracias a? Ashar Farhham, por los buenos momentos que nos ha proporcionado con todo los bueno que hace ,pero mas que todo lo demas, con el BITX-. Yo tengo mas problemas que los que uds tienen en la India, con respecto a los componentes electronicos, internet,etc. pero estoy feliz pues some mucho menos que los que exiten en Corea del Norte. Tengo muchos a?os tratando de hacer lo mismo que logró Ashhar y aun no he podido, por muchas razones, pero de todas la mas importante es el dinero, el capital. Sunil me ha ayudado mucho vendiendome los PCB y enviandolos a Cuba a casi precios de costo, pero solo unos pocos estan en el aire hoy. Entonces, me dije, la unica forma de poder ayudarlos es aprender a hacerlo todo y que ellos mismo lo hagan, de ellos para ellos y eso es lo que estoy haciendo. Creo soy afortunado por vivir en este grandioso pais, que me adopto como su ciudadano y a pesar de sus defectos y problemas es un muy buen lugar donde se puede, si asi lo desea vivir decentemente independientemente de todo las criticas que le puedan hacer. Yo pienso resolver o quizas "cambiar los problemas" creando una organizacion sin fines de lucro, que llevo tiempo pensando y no he podido hacer pues no tengo aqui en los EEUU quien me quiera ayudar compartiendo exactamente la misma idea altruista que yo tengo. Pero si estoy seguro de que lo voy a hacer, lo voy a hacer este 2017 y se tambien que habrá quien me diga como hacerlo mejor, y me mande a empapelar ?las cosas,pero eso no tiene importamcia en comparacion con la felicidades de poder ayudar a los demas. Sigue adelante,si necesitas ayuda, aqui hay muchos que estamos listo para buscar soluciones mas que para criticar.
La critica es buena, si se hace de corazon y si se usa para mejorarlo todo, pero no tiene sentido si se hace de mala fe y por celos profesionales. Tu eres una persona con talento, pero no eres negociante, te entiendo y se que no hiciste esto antes para evitar sinsabores como estos que te hieran.
Esto se trata de un grupo de gente que se siente feliz y que no puede deshacerse por la opinion de una sola persona. Yo no he leido todo, no tengo tiempo y cuando veo que no voy a sacar provecho de lo que esta escrito, lo paso y sigo adelante, asi las cosas, en detalles, no se exactamente cual es la "queja" o la "observacion".
Lo siento, pero queria esciribir todo esto para poder estar feliz este dia 24 de diciembre.

Ham Radio and Homebrewing
I'm working on my Bitx 40, I just got it and it works a little bit. It has poor? reception and no transmit audio But I'm not worried, because I will make it work 100% before I'm done.? This is my fourth BitX.? Two originals. one Model B, and now the Bitz40.
I first became a Ham in 1956 and the things that attracted me most was learning the electronics and building things. Farhan helped me with my first Bitx, so did John and Arv.? John went so far as sending me some parts and schematics. Everyone in the group was helpful.

I think bitx is a tool for self enjoyment in radio. All bitxers learned a lot from it. We all have clear understanding that if it doesn't work on arrival its perhaps good for us providing another opportunity to tinker.?
When Farhan announced availability of a partially assembled bitx many of us were overjoyed. Especially those who love tinkering but don't have access to pcbs and components. It was an opportunity for first time homebrewers too to climb up using this pedestal.
Since the launch of bitx some 10+ years ago perhaps no one talked of economics but of joys of learning and great homebrewing.
Please see the enormous efforts which go behind providing a kit and that too a semi ready one. I personally have such experience and can vouch about it.
