Re: uBITX rotary enconder

What¡¯s the benefit of using this encoder instead of the standard one??

?John Scherer,
?the encoder you have is way too pricey, at over $52.xx each.
?I have a couple of nice low priced ones, with a breakout board, and several without the board that were way cheaper by far.
?I figure to use one with the Raduino, and another with a different Arduino,to control an si5153a, or whatever the number is, instead of the 10K or 100K pot.
I'm way behind, due to being held back by a combination of illness and having a number of things pop up, including losing a truck and some supplies when the truck decided to burn up last April 3rd.
will be working with BITX40's and a BITX20 ( I'm assembling it on a bare board pair).
?I love the idea of using the rotary encoders.
Glad to see a bit more information on them.

I'm making a calibration page on my website here :?

I'm writing it right now as i'm right now calibrating my rig. This method is simple and seems to work quite well in fact.

Re: Accidental Calibrate #ubitx #calibration

I am just an ignorant beginner in amateur radio. ?I hope someone can answer my plea for help.

I assembled my uBITX (v.5) and put it in an enclosure.? It works!? I am very happy!? My first real building success!

The receive sounds great.? My local HAM friends tell me that my transmitted CW sounds good too.

The problem is that the signal they receive is not on the frequency shown on my LCD.? Also, they transmit on a certain frequency, but I must tune to a different frequency to hear them.? Both my receive and transmit frequencies are different from what shows on my LCD.

Can I solve this by ¡°calibration?¡±

I read some threads here and it seems that others have solved this problem but to a new beginner like me, the steps are not clear.? I¡¯m not really experienced with Arduino or Raduino, but I¡¯m eager to learn.

I know it¡¯s a big ask, but, is there someone who might write a step-by-step detailed procedure for ¡°calibrating¡± for a new beginner like me?? Including the very basic steps?? I¡¯ve read some of the threads of those who have accomplished this.? I know I can do it, but I need a little help¡

Thanks for all the great advice and help so far.? This forum has gotten me on the air and I have learned so much!

Thanks for replying to my request for help. See the following link:
I am going to update my firmware to KD8CEC 1.061 or 1.072 because KM6SN put together a very well done manual and it documents exactly how use the new firmware.
The tune up and BFO adjustments have been improved in the new firmware. I am now waiting for a USB to Mini cable I just ordered for my laptop to Arduino Nano firmware update. I think that KD8CEC has corrected a lot of things and he also has a path forward for some great mods. Gonna add BCI filter, AGC fix and a 700 HZ cw filter. I think a lot of the problems have to do with not having AGC. I live in an area that has a lot of AM broadcast stations so the BCI filter should get rid of the interference. I like CW so I will put in the audio 700hz filter from the 4 State QRP club.

Have Fun....

Re: uBITX rotary enconder

I know this is an pretty old post but I have some info that might help others too.? I have been playing with on Jim's (W0EB) wonderful BITeensio board with a Teensy 3.6 processor, and I'm able to read my 1024ppr optical encoder pretty much as fast as I can spin it.? The 1024ppr encoder is pretty useless for the uBitx unless I added routines to divide the ppr (way)down, but I also have several encoders which I do plan on using in my uBitx.? These are very nice and have square wave output and no de-bounce needed.? Now I just need to figure out how to replace the existing encoder non-interrupt based routine with this code..

Well said David, I can spend hours reading, noodling, and building little projects and gain great satisfaction form it all. I don¡¯t have to make hundreds of contacts but the one or two made with the latest gadget really puts a smile on my face and warms the heart. I believe there are far more hams out there tinkering with these rigs and projects than you see in the various reflectors and blogs. Just look at the numbers of these rigs (and ones like it) that are sold.?
I¡¯ve got to tell you this stuff does interest the young ones too, my nephew was fascinated with my small portable station I brought with me while visiting my sister.?
From I life long tinkerer, I still pull out one of the first direct conversation receivers I built and scan the bands just to listen.?

Re: Calibration #calibration

I would also recommend the built-in WSPR function in KD8CECs firmware to calibrate the frequency offset.

Calculate where you should send, then check your reports on wsprnet.org and calculate the average deviation.

Then you can calculate the new calibration value according to the formula on KD8CECs homepage.and upload
it to the raduino.

The BFO adjustments are really a bit hard - I would start with a value which is working onsomeone else's uBITX.
In your case it should be a V5 of course.

My new V5 was nearly deaf on CWL and CWU - then I found a value in this group from someone who had had the same problem.
Worked like a charm.

Even if they don¡¯t open you can still get on digital and have a blast. I used js8call to have conversations and get most of the US.? Most of the digital modes work great on the ubitx in these band conditions. Just watch your finals and add a fan to keep them cool.?

Re: Flipping Nextion display in software? #firmware #nextion #ubitx

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I don't have convenient access to a Windows machine. I've been able to run the nextion editor in Wine, but it just gives an error ("the method or operation is not implemented") and does nothing when I try to compile.

I don't suppose anyone either has a fix or feels like compiling a flipped version for the 2.8 inch basic model? If not, I'll just have to see what I can figure out and maybe get started with the radio using it upside-down in the meantime.

Thanks,

Ben Miller-Jacobson

Yes, you can. If you have the .hmi file, open it with the Nextion editor, select Device on upper right hand of command ribbon, select Display on left, select 270 horizontal, and recompile. I compile mine upside down so the sdcard port is reachable on the top.

For me it's still a thing to do with my V5 board. In Europe it's not easy to catch wwv broadcast stations. So with wspr reports I was able to see frequencies of reporters and it seems that I'm just about 50hz drifted so I guess it's quite good indeed.?

The difficult part is the BFO adjustment. We don't really know the values you change. I can now understand voices but I can't say if it's on the right frequency.?

Need to make some improvements in my wiring first and I'll check again.?

They are sold out at this time. I have more parts already on the way for the next set of 25.

I am also reworking a few things on the board for better labeling and footprints and will order more boards once the next 25 sell.

Not sure on a time frame as one of the parts is coming from Europe but am hopeful for end next week.
