The USB cable needed is Mini,? it has triangle type edges, not rounded like the Micro.

Much more definitive in which way it goes in.

The Mini in my opinion is much better?

You got to have one laying around?

Re: Unused Wires On Raduino Plugs

hi

on the eight pin connector some of the pins are used for cw functions
eg a0 brown is ptt sense
a1 red key
a2 not used
a3 orange function button
a4 yell, a5 green, a7 violet tune pot
a6 not used

somebody corect me if i am wrong

on the 5 pin connector the yellow wire is not used but black wire is for 0 volt

i appear to have an extra 2 pin connector 7 called for on the list but 8 provided. Is it for the non dds vfo if we decide to use it

are there different types of mini connector

Re: Poping in earphone __ Fix

?With LM386 the output volume should be reasonably OK. if you can use insulated mounting you could have an earphone jack wired with 56 ohm series resistor, and that helps reducing the volume into earphones.? Once i gave a schematic on this very site.

Re: QSO night next 7178

Friends, I think some of what is being overlooked is the effective range of QRP under these solar cycle conditions, and the fact that most antennas are not at optimum height, and are not unobstructed.

For the USA let's keep it simple and focus on 7.178 BITX QSOs, and alternatively 7.285 QRP calling frequency. With minor adjustments as needed. And 7.277 could also be a third option.

With these days, times, select?frequency options, successful contacts with other BITX operators is almost solidly assured. DX contacts might?require more flexibility in frequencies, and modes.

And finally, other regions or countries can decide on what works for them, and I bet KC8WBK would include them in his weekly schedule announcement. How much global coverage does this group have anyway? Are there other language BITX groups?

Re: Unused Wires On Raduino Plugs

Michael Davis

The unused wires remain unused and can easily be removed from the plug by depressing the shiny little tab with a toothpick or paper clip wire. I had originally left them in place, but it just crowds the rig and makes it messy(ier)

Re: capacitor for oscillator circuit to measure inductance?

Craig, that is a general purpose oscillator used for other things
than just measuring inductance (characterizing crystals, e.g.)

The writeup is how to measure inductance using this oscillator. It
could be any oscillator that works...it's the principle that counts.

Unused Wires On Raduino Plugs

My Bitx40 arrived last week and i've been slowly putting it together. I noticed that only three of the wires are used on the 8 pin connector, with no instructions to connect the blue, orange, red, brown, or black wires, and on the 5 pin connector the black and yellow wires aren't called out in the instructions. This is right, right?

FYI, I only found two minor circuit board issues so far, both with toroid inductors. The rubber pad underneath one of the trifilar-wound toroids had a large piece of solder along one of the top edges. It popped off easily. I also noticed L2 was floppy and hadn't been pulled snug before the leads being soldered in place, plus it had a glob of solder bridging two coils on the bottom. I unsoldered it, removed the bridge, and resoldered it making sure the wires were snug. These are minor issues, especially given the low price of the Bitx40.

Re: BITX QSO Night, Sunday, May 28, 9pm Local Time, 7.277 MHz

Our limits are: above 7175 to allow US General operators to participate, and below 7120 to allow European operators to participate.? Unfortunately in North America we are getting blasted by kilowatters on 7175, so the 717X area tends to be very noisy.? There are a number of nets in the 718X and 719X band areas. 7200 is pure comedy and noise here in North America.

I am thinking that 7277 in North America and 7177 in the rest of the world might be worth a try.? Any thoughts?

In the oscillator circuit in Ashhar's article at?

it looks to me like the 33pF capacitor is not used.? What am I missing?

Re: QSO night next 7178

The main problem with 7178 is that there are spanish language kilowatt stations that are on 7175 and they are causing a lot of qsb.? W1LY had to run off one of them that was tuning up on 7178.? I am pretty sure that 7277 will be less noisy and if conditions are right will allow longer qso's and more ragchewing.? There are also nets working in the low 718's which can have splatter from the amplifier crowd.

I am thinking that using 7277 for North America and 7177 for the rest of the world will be a solution.? But we are still learning so lets not commit to any frequency yet.

I also noticed that conditions improve at about a half hour after sundown, which for my location is about 9:30pm.? So it is worthwhile to stay on the radio until later in the evening for better conditions.

QSO night next 7178

The frequency that we used last week was very successful 7178. Yes, there was? QRM
but as you all know the band conditions are not frequency specific. Moving up the band
will not change anything except leave out part of the group. If it is noisy on 7178 it will be
noisy on 7277. We have a frequency that did work for many of us, lets stay there.

Re: Raduino_v1.12 released

Darren, there is a third "method" out there, only mentioned in a QST
(I believe) article or maybe CQ...but I am intrigued by it. The
author dubbed it the "Wordsworth Method" and needs FLDIGI software:
you enter or copy in your practice text, then add spaces between words
and let er fly. The idea is to learn CW by recognizing whole words at
a time, and not just characters. I think this is a great way to learn
the "language" of CW, since this is how human beings learn all
terrestrial languages anyway. Worth a try. -- Rich WB2GXM

"Farnsworth or Koch method"

There are significant differences between those.? Farnsworth sends
characters at, usually, a speed of 22 WPM but leaves "gaps" between each
character to achieve a lower overall speed.? The idea is that you will learn
the "sound" of each character instead of counting dots and dashes, and then
you just shorten the gap to improve your speed.

The Koch method , on the other hand, starts out at full speed (20 to 25 WPM)
but with only two characters.? Once you've mastered those characters then a
third character is added.? When those are mastered, a fourth is added, and
so on.? The idea is that you're learning one character at a time at full
speed instead of starting slow and building up.? You can find out more with
an internet search.

Each method has its advantages.? I plan on using Koch whenever I find the
time to actually learn CW.

my bitx40 kit has arrived. I have checked the contents against the list and there is a 0.1 uF cap (wire ends) which is not listed. yhere is also a smd cap listed which i think that i have identified.

what are these caps to be used for
