Re: ft8 interface connections #ft8

I believe i have pulse audio chosen for my setup but would have to look.the posting from another forum, all that info was from them,not me. I didnt have alot of problems getting started but will find out when i actually go from dummy load to antenna.
And the only rig i run on sstv softare either on ubuntu or imac is the ubitx v6.1

hope this helps Ashhar,

Jonathan,
hope u get the physicals out of the way so you can play with the software. running cat is neat with the ubitx. brings back the fun in Radio.
got some honeydoo lists to do so ,

Re: ft8 interface connections #ft8

also,
here is some info i copied from a post from another group regarding audio problems from qsstv.:

Make sure nothing else is using the device, for example, you can't have WSJTX running at the same time as QSSTV. It needs to be shut down.

In order to identify the correct device, I first disconnected the radio from the PC and made a list of the devices under the Sound tab. I then connected the radio and made a note of any new entries that popped up. Armed with that information I was then able to connect to the radio using Alsa and was able to receive.

If you are controlling the radio using the Hamlib interface (Enable Hamlib Cat Interface), the WiKi has a note to say that for Kenwood radios you also need to select CAT(Data Port) . Came across that while trying to figure out how to remote control my radio.

Another option with sound is to use PulseAudio. I am using Linux Mint and when I select PulseAudio I can then go to the menu and launch the PulseAudio Volume Control and QSSTV will be listed in both the Playback and Recording tabs. It is then a matter of selecting the correct audio device on each tab and setting a level. Also look at the Input and Output tabs for the actual device level settings. I just set both to 100% and then the level for QSSTV on the Recording and Playback tab.

Re: ft8 interface connections #ft8

Ashhar,
im still playing with my transmit settings on the ubuntu laptop, but the receive is great. this is the qsstv 9.4.4

This weekend i will try the tranmsit side. I have loaded it into a dummy load and seems to work,buthavent connected it to the antenna as of yet. havent decided which pic i want to transmit form my qth.

oh forgot, you have to click on calibrate to get soundcard to function properly . I didnt do that and it just sat there staring at me waiting for my end to do something.:
It will take several minutes to complete. Be sure to wait long enough, the progress is extremely slow

When RX and TX calibration is finished, press the OK button to accept the new values.

  • Note: You can always enter the clock values manually.this info comes from the Qsstv link from the help tab under users guide subsection SSTV calibration
hope this helps. It took me awhile to get mine going also. it wouldnt read a prerecorded test file until i got the calibration and settings right.

for the Imac, i use? multimode cocoa from blackcat systems

Mobile Ubitx thoughts - Re: [BITX20] 16x2 LCD mod for uBITX v6

My Mobile Ubitx use thoughts:

Suggest adding a tuner-spinner lock out switch.
Add a separate tuner-spinner activation push button.
You may want to change the Ubitx default tuner-spinner to a detent-spinner.
These changes can help when in a bouncing mobile environment.

The Ubitx¡¯s default tuner firmware is not optimize for a tuner knob being bump.

As a blind individual using a Ubitx,
1. I first feel for with my hands and locate the rig on the table.
2. Then I feel for and locate the spinner knob.
3. At this point have now bump the tuner knob and the frequency has move. This is due to the knob was bump in the process of locating the knob.
It is harder to bump a detent-type-tuner.
Also a lock-out-switch will keep the tuner-spinner from being bump.
Changes to Ubitx tuner-spinner firmware could correct this situation.

Hi Nigel,

Quick intro name is Pete, call WB9FLW, qth Maryville, IL USA.

For several years now I have wanted to build a BITX Rig from scratch. The Picture you put on of your 40 Meter Transceiver back in 2017 really caught my eye.

Farhan gave a wonderful presentation at FDIM on Thursday that really got my attention. His talk was on a new Analog Rig called "The Daylight Radio" (not really sure were the name came from).

Key Points:

* Hight Performance 7 MHz 5 Watt SSB Transceiver?

* Draws just 24 ma of Current

* 90 dB Dynamic Range, 80 dB close-in Dynamic Range

* 3 D Printed Rock Stable, Low Noise PTO

* Uses 3D Printed Air Core Toroids!

* Junk Box Parts

* Cost Less than $20 to Build

* Simple to Assemble

* Undo the Love - who needs 50 Ohms

* Uses 5 MHz QER Filter

* VFO is at a very low frequency of 2 MHz, able to decode FT8 Signals no Problem

* Receiver Mixers are pairs of JFET 310 in Cascode

* Active Devices 2n2222a, J310, IRF510

* IC's 5532A, NE602

* Uses a PTO, No Air Variable Caps or Vernier Dial Needed!

* PTO is Linear

* It is no more complicated that the BITX Rigs

This is *not* a Bi Directional aka BITX Rig. Only thing shared is the Crystal Filter. One can build the Receiver first, get it operating before constructing the Transmitter.

He finished the Rig just a few days ago and wrote the Paper on the Flight coming over here, it should be posted on in a few days.

I thought I would contact Folks that I thought might me interested thus this Email to you.

When I get any more info from Farhan I will forward it to you asap.

Will try to stir up some more interest.

I wrote the paper for thr FDIM. We will have to wait for them to publish it first.

* Junk Box Parts

* Cost Less than $20 to Build

* Simple to Assemble

* Undo the Love - who needs 50 Ohms

* Uses 5 MHz QER Filter

* VFO is at a very low frequency of 2 MHz, able to decode FT8 Signals no Problem

* Receiver Mixers are pairs of JFET 310 in Cascode

* Active Devices 2n2222a, J310, IRF510

* IC's 5532A, NE602

* Uses a PTO, No Air Variable Caps or Vernier Dial Needed!

* PTO is Linear

Re: Farhan's Analog Again The Daylight Radio

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi,

I'm building "allanalog" with 1206 smd components on a ? cnc milled pcb ( Easyeda, Flatcam, very old? cncusb , all freeware )

All the circuit except BPF, LPF and power rf section are on a 86x66mm pcb, ( VFO 32x16mm) non the smallest possible,

but I'm a 66 y. o. amateur, not 007......Some questions:

really collector of Q11 is not connected? Why?

On SA602 there are two pins named "2" I suppose non connected are pins "5": right?

On audio output is there enough power for a loudspeaker or only for an headphone?

I do not have a 3d cnc, only a cnc milling machine: are toroid made of plastic? Dimensions?

2.15uH are 32.8T......2uH 31.6T....1.6uH 28.3T ?

Will someone sell the 3d cnc part of the VFO ?

Thank you

Paolo from Italy

My own usage ,i have to start wstjx first,then turn on the ubitx.I found on my imac,after starting ft8 software,i then have to plug in dongle and then the 3.5mm cable.if i dont it either wont transmit ,or receive depending on my imacs mood.:). Has never crashed though. And i use jtdx with the imac with this setup and found the jtdx gives more decodes compared to wsjt-x

with my imac,running catalina ,i have only one headphone jack. no mic jack but has a built in mic.Also My unit doesnt have a dvd/cd rom drive either. I just use thumbdrives to load software or copy,etc.but i also use a soundcard dongle for usb,and of course the 3.5mm cable to heandphone jack.

Basically my imac is a slim fast barebones imac,that runs about everything.I have contacted many countries with this setup,and have fldigi installed for psk31 and rtty .I also have SSTV software installed . But i still had to disable one conductor to prevent the ubitx from going into constant transmit.

even with dongle the setup is basically the same. one cable for audio output and one cable used for microphone input

Seems to work pretty good. Also, I believe on older posts,which you can find in the search box type in ft8 on ubitx or whatever that sounds like it,and the older posts have alot of info regarding the microphone cable conductor issue

Jonathan,

David AC9XH is correct in his advice.? The only difference was that my laptop audio did not work very well, so I bought an $8 USB dongle that solved the audio issues after adding 600ohm isolation transformers.

I did need to add ferrites on the cables between the computer and uBitx to limit RF getting into the computer/uBitx.

In the WSJT-X software, you use the Yeasu FT-817 as the radio selection.? I have disconnected the uBitx from my PC as I am now using a QRP-Labs QDX to play with FT8/FT4, so I do not have the details of all the other settings on the radio page.? Maybe David can share any details that he is using.

Have fun!

Re: uBitX problem

I don't want to get too off topic Evan???but yeah the power wires that he used were the wrong color code. Ground red, Black was the +12 and yellow were the finals.?

Had forgotten about those arrows at power inlet Toward the center of the pic were two tiny arrows which highlighted the main issue.

The unit was bought used and modified into not working by the original owner and was described as working good. When it didn't work Steve was lost. I basically returned most of the wiring to stock.

I posted this as the same circuit seems to be involved and could be checked easily with a VOM.

Dave,

Did you verify that the trace between the two power connections under the header was cut?? If not, then the higher voltage would be sent to the mainboard and that could damage multiple components on it.

It would be an improvement in the v6 design if the board trace was replaced with a jumper that would allow separate power fed to only the finals. That would also allow for testing the transmitter sections without running the finals.

Re: 16x2 LCD mod for uBITX v6

Go a little bit bigger with a 20x4 LCD display.? Much easier to display all the info.?

The user interface can be accomplished with just three buttons:? Down, UP and MENU/SELECT.? You can use the lines that previously went to the rotary encoder.

I have something similar I am working on but, for a VHF/UHF FM cross-band repeater.

Re: uBitX problem

Vic,

Here is an inexpensive shielded RF probe kit.? I have built and tested it, and it works well.

A fellow builder and I are doing a club presentation on modern test equipment for today's Ham.? From our analysis, IF you had to pick one instrument for troubleshooting, it would be a digital oscilloscope.? They range in price from about $80 for a 20MHz USB version to over $10,000.? The sweet spot for economical-minded Hams with occasional use would be a $170 Kiprim that does all that a DMM does except current measurements.? It also does signal purity measurements(spectrum analysis) that would be good enough for most uses.?

If you are willing to spend a little more, then our recommendation is:

We have tested all of the above.? The difference in the Oscopes is the accuracy of the voltage readings.? If three digits are good enough for you, then the Kiprim is OK.

DISCLAIMER - The above are measurements done on a single device purchased from the manufacturer and represent our experience with that single device.? It is not a guarantee that you will have the same experience.? We have no connection to any of the instruments except as a customer.

On a personal note, I use Amazon because of the return policy.? If something does not meet my expectations, I can return it within a reasonable time.? You can find better prices from other sources.
