Thanks for the response Barry, much appreciated. I order some of ebay uk today, I got 5 for around 12 GBP so not too bad.
This definitely looks like a worthwhile mod on the v6, can you provide any more detail around exactly what you changed along with the removing the 3904 and dropping in the 2n5109. Did you change the resistor values in a similar manner to what was done for the 2n2222 swap ? Did you touch Q90 ?
The basic principal is to remove Q911 and replace Q912 and similarly remove Q92, Q97 and replace Q93, Q96, correct ?

It appears that the microphone that came with the kit does not work. R1 Value in the mic was .07mV. Should have been 1.8 V.
So now I have bought another Mic, it is a BETC but has 2 prong connectors. one for audio and the other for the Mic. see attached picture. Is there a connector/ adapter to make this work.
I have tried a splitter and the radio displays TX and the red LED is still not making contact with anyone.

Hi Ted, can you share more details on your 5109 mod, I can mostly what you have done from the attached image but did you change any other components as well ?
What changes did you make to the resistors ?
Also did you change out the finals on this board to something else or is that just a repair ?

Peter, yes I did! The 5109 give more power out on the upper bands but not more on 80, 40, 30 or 20. Off the top of my pointed head,? I would say about double the output power vs the stock 3904 devices. One thing I am going to do with my V6 is put a direct dc connection to the final mosfets and run those at 24 volts.? One thing I noticed from Mouser is in March I bought 5 of the 2N5109 transistors for around $3. Now they are not in stock. So not sure where to buy them from.

Ordered om 6/15/2020 and it got here 6/29/2020.?? Once it was shipped DHL it took 3 days.? They explained the shipping delay was that they ran out of knobs.? Corona-19 may have slowed their knob shipment.? I am delighted it is here.?? Maybe I should remove one wire from a control and solder it back on.?? Thanks for the revert. I have tried to set the BFO to the best signal on 20m? but even then it is distorted.
There is also a 2Khan- ve shift.
I read on the forum a out a separate audio amp improving the audio quality. Hence thought about tinkering.
Some of the fellow hams in Mumbai which is my QTH also told me that the calibration also needs to be redone.
Am trying to locate a frequency counter to perform the 10mhz calibration my self.

Do listen with headphones to see if audio is still very distorted.
These boards usually arrive with the BFO not properly adjusted. If the signal is coming too close or beyond the edge of the crystal filter passband this can cause significant distortion. Its the setting of the BFO that determines where the audio signal sits when it passes through the xtal filter.
A smaller thing, some of us modify the lm386 circuit for a better sound. This info is on the web. See la3za website,? but this is a minor aspect.
Check simple things before presuming its a circuit issue, it may not be.

Many thanks, David. It's all working. I *do* notice a drop in overall volume.
Just an FYI for your documentation: You indicate that the S-meter connection on a TSW Teensy can go to pin A19. There is no "pin A19." There is a pin 19 which is A5. Using A5 doesn't work. The TSW documentation says it should go to A7. It also says it's pre-calibrated for the N8DAH board, and I have to assume that board is the same as yours, and if it's not I've connected to A7 anyhow - mostly because I don't have a 50 microvolt signal for calibration.

Hi,
Apparently mine is far past due for failure. But it is okay because I have several 386s in the drawer. On the other had I may have one of the chips that was *not* an imposter. Those were mentioned by HF Signals. I have eluded the bogey man numerous times over the years. Been to war. Went to sea. Served the local fire dept for a long time. An audio amp that can't take the standard voltage and needs replacement seems kind of trivial.

Hi,
My V3 has the original chip (not the one identified as sissy) and I run it from 13.8 volts regularly. I *never* plug/unplug earphones/speakers, key/paddles, mic, nor antenna with power turned on. If my audio chip does fail a 386 will take it's place.
